Romania: Brau Union Romania reports leadership consolidation for the first half of 2006

Brau Union Romania, member of the Heineken Group, concluded the first six months of the year 2006 with an increase of 25% in turnover.

In a context of important investments, sales evolution is on ascendant trend and demonstrates the efficiency of the company’s consolidation process.

“For the first half of 2006, we are pleased to announce we have met our set financial objectives and consolidated the increasing trend in sales”, said Edwin Botterman, President & CEO, BRAU UNION Romania. The company concluded the first 6 months of the year with turnover increase of 25% compared to the same period, the previous year.

Constant growing of sales in the first half of 2006

This year’s first half represented a consolidation of the growing trend of sales that became visible during the last months of 2005. The total company beer sales in the first half of 2006 reached an increase of 17% compared to the January – June 2005 sales.

Canada & USA: Molson Coors reports 2006 second quarter results

Molson Coors Brewing Company released on October 2nd its financial results for the second quarter ending June 25, 2006. Net sales, income from continuing operations (after-tax) (1), net income and earnings per share increased in the quarter compared to the same period a year ago.

Second quarter 2006 net sales of $1.58 billion increased 2.3 percent from the second quarter 2005. Sales volume grew 2.3 percent to 11.4 million barrels, or 13.4 million hectoliters (hls), compared to the second quarter a year ago. All $ amounts in U.S. dollars.

Cost of goods sold in the second quarter was $920.0 million, an increase of 2.7 percent over the same quarter last year. Marketing, general and administrative expense rose 0.4 percent to $448.3 million in the second quarter 2006. During the quarter, Molson Coors continued to implement merger-related synergies and cost cutting programs across the Company. In total, Molson Coors achieved approximately $27 million in synergies and other cost savings during the quarter. These savings were more than offset, however, by commodity and energy-related cost inflation, which adversely affected each of the Company's businesses.

Czech Republic: The court in Prague rejected the complaint of Czech bank CSOB against Nomura in the Ceske pivo case

The municipal court in Prague rejected on Thursday October 5th the complaint of Czech bank CSOB against Nomura in the Ceske pivo (Czech Beer) case, in which CSOB demanded some CZK 24 billion, according to the Praque Daily Monitor.

The chronology of related events:

Sept 7, 2000 – CSOB takes legal action against Nomura over its acquisition of Plzensky Prazdroj and Radegast breweries, which Nomura bought in 1999 for CZK 9 billion and sold later the same year to South African Breweries for CZK 22 billion.

CSOB claims Nomura did not pay in cash but with IPB bank shares, which later became worthless, and files suit in London. Nomura insists it paid for the breweries.

Jan 30, 2001 - Police accuse Libor Prochazka and Aladar Blass, former deputies to the IPB CEO, of several crimes related to the Ceske pivo case.

Feb 25, 2002 - CSOB files a complaint over Ceske pivo against companies from the Nomura group with the district court for Prague 1 and a court in London. It wants CZK 24 billion in compensation.

April 25, 2002 - The arbitration court in London rules Pembridge, controlled by Nomura, could pay for the Czech breweries' stock with IPB shares. The verdict is confirmed ... More Info

Australia: Foster's Group may change its name

Australian wine and beer company Foster's Group is considering dropping "Foster's" from its name as it focuses on premium beverages, AAP posted on October 6th. Foster's Group chief Trevor O'Hoy is apparently less than impressed with the corporate title, telling investors in London he would like to change it.

Foster's chief executive, who is meeting investors in London, told Britain's Financial Times newspaper he was not keen on having brand names as corporate names and the company would probably opt for a more "generic" name. "As we grow, the brand Foster's becomes less important to us," Mr O'Hoy told the paper.

Foster's expanded its wine operations with last year's purchase of Southcorp.

Once marketed by its owner as Australia's "favourite" beer, Foster's switched to being called the country's "most famous" beer when its popularity was taken over by the Foster's-owned brand, Victoria Bitter. Foster's is planning to develop VB sales in Europe and North America, the Financial Times said.

Foster's owns about 60 wine brands, 35 beer brands, six spirits and cider brands and four non-alcoholic brands.

World: September’s main malt market events

Malt business in September 2006 included Southeast Asian purchases from Australia, Europe and China, market analysts communicated on October 3rd.

Two breweries in Brazil purchased about 180,000 tonnes for 2007, predominantly from Argentina and from local suppliers.

Thailand and Venezuela requested offers, but did not buy yet. The large international brewing groups have not completed their purchases for 2007.

China: The precarious world balance of malting barley will change the mood in China, analysts said

China is maintaining its position as the largest importer of malting barley in the world, as USDA and IGC still estimate imports of 2.2 million tonnes in 2006/07. “But where will they get this quantity?” analysts ask. China's beer output of minimum 330 million hl requires only 3.3 million tonnes of malt equal 4.1 million tonnes of barley (maybe 200.000 tons of wheat).

The Chinese crop of malting barley is 2.3-2.5 million tonnes. The winter barley crop of the Central South (Shanghai) is of mediocre quality, spring barley from Gansu and Xinjiang as well as from the north, i.e. Heilongjiang and Hebei, fairly good.

If the industry accepts these quantities, China is still left with an import deficit of min. 1.5 million tonnes, and even that quantity can hardly be found, at least till the uncertain crop of 2007 in Europe. The precarious world balance will change the mood in China, as even all the large maltsters and brewers will use domestic barley and support its cultivation in future years.

Australia: Barely production estimated lower by analysts

August and September rainfalls throughout Australia have been so low that all winter crops deteriorated substantially. Abare’s barley crop production estimate 2006/07 of September 13 is of
5,840,000 tonnes versus 9,869,000 tonnes in 2005/06

Meantime drought, high temperatures and hot winds have done further damage, private sources speak of a barley crop below 5 million tonnes. For comparison, the AWB has published an estimate of the wheat crop of 13.2 million tonnes, compared to ABARE's figure of 16.4 million tonnes.

Feed barley values at the east coast are well above the equivalent of US$ 200,- FOB, and farmers are cutting their poorly looking barley fields for hay. It is feared that the selection of malting barley will be smaller and quality lower than average.

Hops News
USA: S.S. Steiner hop warehouse was devastated by fire on October 02

On Monday, October 2nd, a warehouse in Yakima, Washington with hops belonging to one of the largest merchant groups in the world caught fire and burned to the ground. Douglas MacKinnon told E-malt that the burned hop warehouse was located at the HopUnion facility although it was a privately owned warehouse and contained no HopUnion hops inside. In the warehouse were reportedly 10,000 bales of hops.

Mr MacKinnon, commented:
“Immediately that evening, in response to the fire, the price for super alpha hops started to increase. Those few American growers still with hops left to sell were not anxious to sell knowing that the market this year is extremely tight and that the price would certainly continue to rise.

No word is yet available as to the type of hops that were destroyed or the quantity of alpha acid that was lost due to the fire. Since it was the price for super alpha hops that began to rise immediately following the fire and since it is typically the super alpha hops that are most prone to spontaneous combustion, we may assume that a good portion of the hops contained in the warehouse were alpha type hops.”
