Tsingtao Brewery Co Ltd, China's largest beermaker, said third quarter net profit rose 26.97 pct year-on-year to CHY212.22 million under Chinese accounting standards, boosted by strong sales, AFX News Limited released October 30.

Revenue in the third quarter rose 11.6 pct year-on-year to CHY3.67 billion.

The brewer sold 37.5 million hl of beer in the first three quarters, up 9.1 pct from a year earlier, with sales of its flagship Tsingtao brand up 16 pct at 12.85 million hl.

Tsingtao gave no detailed guidance for the full year, noting only that the fourth quarter is seasonally weak for beer sales.

Assets totalled CHY10.46 billion at the end of September, up 9.05 pct from the end of last year.

In a report dedicated to Hong Kong shares, Forbes reported that Tsingtao Brewery fell HK$0.28 or 2.52 pct at 10.82 despite reporting that its third quarter net profit rose 26.97 pct year-on-year.

Mexico: Grupo Modelo posted a 19 % jump in 3Q 2006 net profit

Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo, the maker of popular Corona beer, posted an 18.6 percent jump in third-quarter net profit as it boosted domestic and export sales, Reuters informed October 27.

The company, half-owned by Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., said its net profit for the quarter reached MXN2.331 billion (US$212 million).

Revenues during the quarter were MXN14.272 billion, up 9.5 percent over the year-ago period, the brewing company said.

"During the third quarter, total beer volume grew 7.6 percent, reaching 12.5 million hl," Modelo said in stock exchange filing.

Shares of Modelo were off 1.4 percent at MXN50.02 in afternoon trade.

Colombia: SABMiller’s Bavaria S.A. reports growth in revenues of 14.7%

Bavaria SA, as a separate legal entity, reported unconsolidated results from January to September 2006. Bavaria’s sales totalled 14.429 million hl (13.293 million hl; in the gaps figures year-on-year) of which 10.746 million hl (10.024 million hl) were beer sales. Net revenue reached US$2.149.428 million (14.7%).

On a consolidated basis, Bavaria sales reached 17.4 million hectolitres in the first nine months of 2006, representing an increase of 8.7% over prior year. This gratifying rate of growth was underpinned by a robust Colombian economy, increased brand and trade investments and the launches of new products and packaging innovations.

For Bavaria, as a separate legal entity, net revenues increased by 14.7%. In addition, there was a marked improvement in procurement and cost performance. However, operating expenses increased as a result of accelerated depreciation of returnable containers in the first nine months of the year, following their reclassification from inventory to fixed assets, as well as a write down due to their poor condition.

Non operating revenues were boosted in these three quarters by exchange gains on US$ investments following the devaluation of the COP against the US$. This situation was partially reversed in the third quarter following the strengthening of the COP against the US$. ...

Australia: ABB Grain has relaxed malting barley grade specifications due to difficult growth conditions

ABB Grain has this harvest established a special malting barley grade with no retention (the measure of grain size and plumpness), recognising that due to harsh growing conditions the grain size of malting varieties will be smaller than in normal seasons, the company released October 27.

ABB Grain’s managing director, Michael Iwaniw, said that ABB acknowledged the difficulties growers faced this season in producing superior quality grain and, as a result, had relaxed its malting grade specifications to accommodate these exceptional circumstances. (See table below)

“We have spoken with our customers and kept them fully informed of the tough conditions and the likely impact on grain quality and quantity, Mr Iwaniw said.

“Removing the retention limit for malting barley is a significant change. It takes away a major classification requirement that growers would normally face.

“This move we believe will hold the value in the grain and provide growers with higher returns and overcomes a large percentage of the crop falling into feed segregations, with a subsequent loss of value for growers.

“Under normal malting barley standards there is a requirement that at least 70% of grain is retained above the 2.5mm screen to achieve malt 1, which we’ve now reduced to a 2.2mm ...
