Brewery News
China: China Resources Snow acquires Blue Sword minorities and a brewery in Guizhou

China Resources Snow Breweries Limited, a subsidiary of China Resources Enterprise, Limited and a joint venture with SABMiller plc, announced in its press release of January 4, that it has agreed to acquire a 100% equity interest in “Blue Sword (Group) Company Limited” for a cash consideration of RMB2.5 billion.

Prior to completion, Blue Sword (Group) Company Limited will carry out a reorganization whereby all the non-brewery related assets will be transferred out of it, and its assets as at completion will be the 38% equity interest in 14 Blue Sword brewery companies in Sichuan, 100% equity interest in “Sichuan Blue Sword Holdings (Guizhou) Waterfall Brewery Limited”, RMB100 million cash and the “Blue Sword” trademarks. The remaining 62% equity interest in the Sichuan Breweries is presently owned by CR Snow. After the acquisition, CR Snow will own 100% equity interest in both the Sichuan Breweries and Blue Sword Guizhou. Completion of the transaction is expected to take place in early 2007, following satisfaction of pre-closing conditions.

Blue Sword Guizhou has an annual production capacity of 80,000 kiloliters and its sales volume in 2005 was around 41,000 kiloliters, accounting for around 15% market share of the province. For the year ended 31 ...

Mexico: FEMSA CERVEZA announces price increase in Mexico

FEMSA Cerveza, a subsidiary of Fomento Economico Mexicano, announced on January 2, that it will increase beer prices in Mexico beginning on January first. Similar to previous years, the weighted average price increase will be differentiated by region, point of sale, brand and presentation. The amount of the increase is expected to be in-line with Mexico's inflation for 2007 and full roll-out of the price increase is expected to be complete by mid-February.

The price increase will enable FEMSA Cerveza to compensate for Mexico's inflation and for higher costs in raw materials, particularly aluminum, barley and glass bottles, which have generated cost pressure since 2006.

Due to its information technology platform, FEMSA Cerveza is able to manage differentiated pricing by region, distribution channel, brand and product presentation.

FEMSA is the leading beverage company in Latin America. It controls an integrated beverage platform that comprises Coca-Cola FEMSA, the largest Coca-Cola bottler in the region; FEMSA Cerveza, one of the leading brewers in Mexico and important beer exporter to the United States; and Oxxo, the largest and fastest growing convenience store chain in Mexico with over 4,000 stores.

Russia: Russian beer production could grow to 100 mil hl by 2009

Beer production in Russia could grow to 100 mil hl by 2009, according to Economic Development and Trade Ministry’s forecast for 2007-2010, Interfax announced on December 28.

Beer production is to grow to 95 million hl in 2006 compared to 91 million hl in 2005, the forecast says. Output is to grow to 98 million hl in 2007, 99 million hl in 2008 and 100 million hl in 2010.

Beer imports will increase to 2.8 million hl in 2009 from 2.5 million hl in 2005, the ministry said.

Japan: Asahi Breweries' 2006 operational profit to rise 1%

Japan's Asahi Breweries Ltd. is expected to report a 2006 operating profit of around 91 billion yen ($766 million), up 1 percent year-on-year but missing its own forecast by 4.5 billion yen, Reuters reported on December 28.

The paper said the maker of Super Dry beer would fall short of its sales target by 38 billion yen due to sluggish beer and beer-like drink sales, and group sales are seen totalling around 1.45 trillion yen in the year ending this month.

Asahi spokesman Yasuhiro Nakahara said the report was based on the paper's speculation. He added that the company would announce its 2006 results in early February.

Shares in Asahi were down 0.4 percent at 1,888 yen as of 0014 GMT, underperforming a 0.37 percent rise in the benchmark Nikkei average.

Asahi is likely to lose its position as the country's top beer maker to rival Kirin Brewery Co. this year. To boost sales, Asahi has introduced a series of new products in the second half of this year, but it has not been able to make up for a sales slump in the first half.

In August, the company slashed its full-year group operating profit forecast to 95.5 billion yen from 105 billion yen. ...

Czech Republic: Budvar´s beer output to grow five percent in 2006

Beer production at Budejovicky Budvar, the last Czech state-owned brewery, will increase by five percent to 1.15 million hectoliters this year, the company's PR agency announced on December 28.

Sale on the domestic market will grow some three percent, while exports will be seven percent higher than last year.

"We are especially pleased with the results in the Czech Republic where the market for beer is stagnant. But we also treasure the significant increase in sale on our most important export markets, that is, in Germany, Great Britain, Slovakia and Austria," said Budvar trade director Robert Chrt.

"Many projects and changes launched in the past years have borne fruit this year. We of course want to maintain the growth trend in future. We are already implementing other planned projects that will help us achieve that," Chrt said.

Budejovicky Budvar, established in 1895, was transferred to state hands in 1946. Budvar is the third largest brewery in the country and one of leading domestic beer exporters. Roughly half of its annual production is exported to 50 countries.

UK & China: S&N is to spend up to £100m to increase its Chinese beer maker stake

Scottish & Newcastle is to spend up to £100m on increasing its stake in one of China's leading brewers, Telegraph Media published on January 3. The source said that S&N, which includes Foster's and John Smith's among its biggest-selling UK brands, will increase its stake in Chongqing Brewery Company (CBC) to just under 20pc. The deal will be completed in the first half of the year, according to someone familiar with S&N's plans.

The additional investment, which comes after an initial £35m outlay in February 2004, has been prompted by a proposed restructuring at CBC that will see its brewing subsidiaries injected into its Shanghai-listed parent.

S&N's cash injection has been planned since its deal three years ago, although the company has yet to confirm it. The fresh investment will give S&N a slightly bigger shareholding in a substantially larger business.

S&N has already seen its original 19.5pc stake diluted by a previous share issue to its current 17.5pc, underlining the fact that multinationals investing in Chinese companies can become hostages to fortune. S&N, which declined to comment on its plans, has had ties with CBC for well over a decade, and has seen its partner become China's sixth-largest brewer, with a market ...

Barley News
EU: New crop market prices for malting barley leave farmers an ex-harvest price of 50% more

Obviously farmers have second thoughts about their plantings of malting barley. For years the production of spring barley had been a financial disappointment to them, and the acreage had declined year after year.

According to analysts, new crop market prices leave farmers an ex-harvest price of EUR 150,-/160,- per ton, about 50% more than a year ago. The large demand for bio-energy grains and rapeseed and the excellent planting weather in autumn have led to a further expansion of winter grain acres and consequently a smaller open acreage for spring grains.

World: Positive trends in beer and malt markets expected, although the sales volume remained modest

The Nuremberg Brau fair in November reflected the positive mood in beer and malt markets, much interest was shown in further malt purchases, although the sales volume remained modest, market analysts said on December 22.

Taiwan held a tender for the import of 64.000 tons, but purchased only 15.000 tons, one other offer for 10.000 tons was considered too expensive, another one did not match tender terms, and total offerings were only 55.000 tons anyway. This story is typical for the present world market. North and South America are sold out for 2007, in Europe the largest malting groups are sold out as well; some others may still have a limited capacity for sale, but no barley cover.

The take-over of the Weissheimer group will not change the picture much, because most of the Weissheimer factories also produced under the insolvency regime. It is hardly surprising that a newcomer, China, could establish itself as an exporter this year. It cannot be excluded any more that the world will run into a genuine malt deficit in the first half of 2007. The world beer output in 2006 was excellent; the plus from last year will top three and may reach even four ...
