Heineken and Anheuser-Busch will begin brewing and selling Budweiser in Panama, the companies said in a joint-statement, AFX News Limited announced January 30.

The statement said the beer will be brewed and sold by Cervecerias Baru-Panama – a 75 percent Heineken-owned brewery – under a license agreement with Anheuser-Busch.

Projected volume or sales were not provided.

About Anheuser-Busch:

Anheuser-Busch operates 12 breweries in the United States and several others overseas. Anheuser-Busch's operations and resources are focused on adding to life's enjoyment not only through the responsible consumption of beer by adults, but through theme park entertainment and packaging.

The St. Louis-based company's subsidiaries include one of the largest U.S. manufacturers of aluminum beverage containers and America's top recycler of aluminum cans. Czech Republic: SABMiller’s Plzeňský Prazdroj sales grew 5.7% year-on-year

Plzeňský Prazdroj, major Czech beer exporter and producer, announced on January 30 in 2006, its overall sales of domestic and export brands reached almost 10.7 million hectolitres, representing an increase of 5.7% year-on-year. In particular, export sales made a significant contribution to the increased volumes, including the licensed production of the Plzeňský Prazdroj brands.

In 2006, domestic beer sales reported growth of 2.4%, reaching 8.1 million hectolitres. The highest growth sales growth was recorded in the South Bohemia region (České Budějovice and neighbourhood) where it rose by 7% year-on-year. The Pilsner Urquell brand recorded volume growth of 4.6% and Velkopopovický Kozel, with 10.3% growth, achieved its best year-on-year result. The company saw good growth across all Velkopopovický Kozel packaging units, but the best performance was achieved in [draft] barrel beer, with a 22% year-on-year change.

Pilsner Urquell and Velkopopovický Kozel – Czech ambassadors abroad

Plzeňský Prazdroj confirmed its position as the largest exporter and producer of the Czech beer abroad. Overall sales volumes of Plzeňský Prazdroj brands abroad grew by a record 17.5%, compared to 2005. Sales of Pilsner Urquell contributed to this achievement; however Velkopopovický Kozel enjoyed significant success in markets with licensed production. In total, Plzeňský Prazdroj exported 786,000 ...

UK: Marston's, the former Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, buys its rival, Eldridge Pope

Regional brewer and pub group Marston's - the former Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries – took over smaller rival Eldridge Pope for pounds 155.1 million, The Birmingham Post said on January 26.

Cost containment for communications vendors and their carrier customers can be achieved on two fronts. Click here to find out what they are and how to streamline the development and maintenance costs associated with building the product.

The deal will enable Wolverhampton-based Marston's to boost its presence in southern England - and in more profitable managed pubs.

The takeover is the latest in a fast-consolidating industry, as higher regulatory, labour and energy costs weigh on smaller pub groups and lead bigger operators to seek economies of scale.

"It's easier if you're bigger to cope with some of the costs in the sector," said chief executive Ralph Findlay. He added the firm would look to make more acquisitions in England and Wales but would still aim to return pounds 100 million to shareholders and maintain its new-build program.

However, analysts were divided on the attractiveness of the deal, as well as the price paid.

Marston's, which changed its name this month from Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries to reflect its expansion in pubs and beyond central England, ...

Mexico: Grupo Modelo coming to Piedras Negras region with US$15 billion of investments

Grupo Modelo announced its interest to open business in Mexican state of Coahuila, just 20 miles south of Eagle Pass, Soutwest Live reported January 28. And the impact is likened to the arrival of Toyota truck manufacturing near San Antonio.

But Coahuila promoters say the economic benefits are far greater, and expected to touch Ciudad Acuńa and Del Rio, as well. The Grupo Modelo brewery will be built in Municipio Nava, now a tiny community just north of Allende. Officials in Piedras Negras and Eagle Pass do not even try to conceal their glee about the trade and industry windfall.

It will not do anything bad, said Eagle Pass Mayor Chad Foster. All this is just very, very positive and it is going to affect the whole region. And Foster said local railroads that cross from Mexico to the United States will put the Grupo Modelo brewery on a fast track for both construction and product shipment.

They have been working on this project for at least five years, Foster said, recalling decisions to site the brewery near Nava. And they are in a real hurry, because they have underestimated demand for Corona. The popular brew, along with Modelo Light ...

China: Anheuser-Busch said Jan-Sept 2006 China sales up 20 pct

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., the largest U.S. brewer, said that China sales volume grew 20 percent in the January-September period and that future gains would likely be powered by organic growth, Reuters reported January 29.

Stephen Burrows, chief executive of Anheuser-Busch International, told Reuters in an interview he was satisfied with his base of operations in China even as aggressive rivals gain market share through acquisitions.

“Certainly, it is organic growth in China,” said Burrows, who travels to China about once a month.

The company has invested about $1.3 billion in the mainland, the world's largest beer market by volume, helping it become Anheuser-Busch's largest overseas market and fastest growing.

“When you buy an existing company there are rough spots in that,” he said.

Anheuser-Busch has a 27 percent stake in Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd., China's largest beer maker. It also bought Wuhan Brewing Co. in 1995 and Harbin Brewery Group, the country's fifth largest beer maker.

Burrows said he had met most of the brewers in China over the past few years but was not currently in discussions with any of them for any possible acquisition.

“I have met them but that doesn't mean we are trying to acquire ...

Canada: Agricore United and CWB dispute over Canadian barley prices

Agricore United, Canada's largest grain company has begun posting its own international feed barley price for farmers – a price that dwarfs current price signals from the Canadian Wheat Board, Reuters reported January 27.

But the CWB, which has a monopoly on feed barley exports from Western Canada, said Agricore's spot price is unrealistic and misleading.

On Thursday, Agricore's spot feed barley price was C$233.70 ($198) a tonne, basis Vancouver, 23 percent higher than the Canadian Wheat Board's projected pool return of C$190 a tonne, basis Vancouver.

"Prices are going up, and that's one of the reasons why we felt that it was important to ensure farmers were aware of what the international prices were as they're making their (planting) decisions," said Cam Dahl, Agricore's government relations and policy development officer.

The internally calculated price is somewhat theoretical, Dahl acknowledged, since farmers cannot sell their barley directly to Agricore for the export market.

But he said the price reflects what Agricore could pay if the market were open.

A spokeswoman for the CWB said Agricore's price seemed to reflect recent feed barley sales made into the Japanese market, where demand is limited.

"You can quote any price you want, as long ...
