Brewery News
Poland: Poland's top three brewers increased beer sales 7.2% to 32.5 mln hl in 2006

Browary Polskie, a grouping of Poland's three largest breweries, said its members sold 7.2% more beer year-on-year (y/y) to a total of 32.5 mln hectolitres (hl) in 2006 against 30.3 mln hl in 2005, the association said in a report Wednesday, according to Interfax Central Europe, February 7.

"Good results of the brewing industry last year reflect positive external factors: the FIFA World Cup and a hot summer," said Mark

Bowman, the general director of Poland's top brewer, SABMiller-owned Kompania Piwowarska. "The increase of consumer wealth was also an important factor."

Browary Polskie expects the sales volume to rise 2-3% in 2007. "Such growth as last year will be hard to repeat, but we would like to see beer sales rise by 2-3% this year," Browary Polskie President Pawel Sudol told a press conference, as reported by the state-owned news agency PAP.
He added that per-capita beer consumption in Poland is approaching the average in the European Union.
"As a sector we are prepared for higher sales as the sector's production capacities amounted to 35-36 mln hl in 2006, but we try to be cautious in our forecasts," Sudol said. "Beer consumption ...

Japan: 3 major Japanese brewers reported record-high profits in 2006

Three major beer brewers in Japan saw record high profits in their 2006 business year through Dec. 31 by expanding lineups of beer-like products and offering more food and soft-drink products while demand for beer kept shrinking, according to their reports released by Thursday, Kyodo News International reported February 8.

Kirin Brewery Co. posted a record high net profit of 53.5 billion yen, up 4.4 percent from the previous year, on sales of 1.67 trillion yen, up 2.1 percent, as it had good sales of "happoshu" low-malt beers and low-priced "third category" beers.

Asahi Breweries Ltd. said its net profit rose 12.3 percent to a record high 44.7 billion yen on record high sales of 1.45 trillion yen, up 1.1 percent. Asahi was the only brewer which saw sales in beer drop. But its acquisition of major baby food maker Wakodo Co. and a solid performance at affiliate Asahi Soft Drinks Co. helped it boost profits.

Suntory Ltd.'s pretax profit jumped 29.2 percent to an all-time-high 75.5 billion yen as its sales rose 2.9 percent to 1.41 trillion yen thanks to brisk sales of its "high grade" beer products and pricey health-conscious tea products.

Suntory reduced its pretax loss in the beer segment of ...

Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) has a strong 2007 start

APB had a strong start to the current financial year, with almost all markets contributing to a positive overall Group performance, according to company’s news room, February 9.

Attributable net profit before exceptional items achieved robust organic growth of 19.2% or $7.6 million versus the same period last year. Including gestation losses and related costs, attributable profit before exceptional items gained 2.7% or $1.1 million to $40.5 million.

PBIT grew organically by $10.3 million or 13.6% as compared to the first quarter of the previous year. However, taking into account gestation losses and related costs, PBIT rose 1.0% or $0.7 million from $75.5 million to $76.2 million.

Mr. Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB said, “The healthy organic profit growth demonstrated the benefits of establishing a regional footprint for APB and the firm platform that has been laid. Amongst the best performing markets this first quarter was Papua New Guinea which recorded an impressive 31% increase in PBIT due to improved margins from beer price increases and volume growth of 14%. IndoChina too achieved volume gains of 26% while New Zealand and China registered volume growth of 12% and 11% respectively.”

While APB’s regional markets continued to contribute significantly to its ...

Belarus & Russia: Belarus to lift restrictions on Russia's beer imports from Mar.1

Belarus said it will lift its restrictions on imports of Russia beer as of March 1, RIA Novosti reported February 7.

Belarus put quotas on Russian beer in February 2003 to protect the domestic brewery industry. Many experts said Russian-made beer was of higher quality, while prices were similar for brewery products produced in both ex-Soviet republics.

Trade relations between the traditional allies have been complicated recently by a host of issues, in particular an energy row at the beginning of the year.

Russia and Belarus declared their intention in 1997 to build a Union State envisaging a common economic, customs and political space, but the negotiations have stalled.

Vietnam: Scottish & Newcastle and Vietnam Tobacco to build a brewery

A joint venture between Scottish & Newcastle Plc and Vietnam National Tobacco Corp. was licensed on Feb. 8 to construct a brewery with an annual capacity of 100 million litres in southern Long An province, Asia Pulse reported February 9.

The Kronenbourg Vietnam Co. Ltd. has a total investment capital of US$75 million equally contributed by the two partners and an operation period of 50 years.

Located in Duc Loc commune, Duc Hoa district, the brewery is scheduled to become operational after 18 months of construction.

USA & Australia: Coopers beers are now available in all 50 states of America

Coopers beers of Australia are now available in all 50 states of America as the result of a distribution agreement with USA restaurant franchise, the Outback Steakhouse Company, according to Coopers’ press release of February 7.

And in another distribution deal, Coopers has sent a trial shipment of keg beer to support a new Australian-themed restaurant in California, the Bondi Bar and Kitchen.

Bottles of Coopers Sparkling Ale and Lager are now being sold in all 775 Outback Steakhouse franchises in the USA, opening the way for the beers to be sold in other outlets in each state.

Coopers Chairman and Marketing Director, Mr Glenn Cooper, said work to roll-out beer supplies to the Outback Steakhouse franchises in the USA had commenced in September last year and had now been completed.
“Coopers is now the first real Australian-made beer to be sold in all states of America,” he said.

While Coopers has been exporting to the US for a number of years, differing licensing and distribution requirements in each state have meant that exports were restricted to the larger population centers.
However, as part of the Outback Steakhouse contract, Coopers worked with distributors in each state to meet the differing requirements and open up sales to ...

Malt News
EU: A strong reduction of malt exports from last year are shown by EU malt export licence fixations

EU malt export licence fixations of 1.06 million tonnes at the end of January show a strong reduction of exports from last year.

At present the pace of exports is down by 160,000 tonnes. If the rhythm of export shipments remains unchanged, exports at the end of the crop year will total 1.8 million tonnes against 2.1 million tonnes last year.

There is no single reason for the lower exports, but a combination of factory closures, uncompetitive offers of inland maltsters, a very short malt cover by brewers, and some losses of market share to maltsters of Canada, Argentina, Russia and China.

Barley News
EU: Estimates of new crop malting barley acreage are different in different EU countries

France is changing its variety of six-row winter barley; Esterel will be sharply reduced and partly replaced by Cervoise. Also two-row winter barley Vanessa plantings will be less than in past years, according to analysts. Therefore France may produce altogether much less winter malting barley. However, French farmers, who harvested a reasonably good crop of spring barley in 2006 and who find the new crop price levels of EUR 160,- ex farm attractive, will grow possibly up to 10 % more spring barley, in the Champagne even 15 % more.

One forecast for the UK is: 2 % more winter barley, but the share of malting varieties will drop from 45 to 35 %, 2 % less spring barley, but the share of malting varieties will increase from 70 to 80 %. This expectation is, of course, preliminary, but it could lead to a small increase of malting barley production.

A forecast for Germany is particularly difficult, as there are negative opinions citing the attractiveness of grain production for bio-energy and optimistic voices saying that farmers are attracted by the good prices of malting barley after all. Germany is by far the largest producer of bio-diesel and bio-gas in the ...

EU: 12 million tonnes of malting barley is forecast by Strategie Grains for crop 2007 versus 10.4 million tonnes in 2006

The French forecaster "Strategie Grains" has published a first estimate of the EU-27 barley crop in 2007: 61 million tonnes of barley versus 56 million tonnes last year, of which 12 million tonnes malting barley versus 10.4 million tonnes in 2006.

Market analysts commented: “It is normal that crop forecasters base their figures on normal vegetation conditions, and in good years they are right. The experiences of past years, the recent UN study on the climatic changes in the world, and last, not least the strange warm winter in Europe to-date are warning us not to be too optimistic.

Market actions of the past months indicate that trade and industry have become less speculative and more security-minded in their activities. As a side-note it must be mentioned that Spain is rather dry again, and Greece and Turkey report drought conditions endangering their crops already at such an early stage. North America, on the other hand, is going though a very cold period.

Should that cold front come to Europe, there will be a great risk of winter kill in the far advanced fields of winter grains, unless the cold comes together with sufficient snowfalls. As a consequence a larger acreage of ...
