Turkey: Anadolu Efes announced a 17% rise in y/y beer sales volume

Anadolu Efes beer sales volume in the twelve month period ended on 31.12.2006 was up 17% over previous year and constituted 18.8 million hectoliters, according to company’s press release, February 14.

Turkey beer

• In spite of the severe winter and exceptionally short summer period in 2006, together with the lower than expected overall tourism activity, which had a negative effect on the total consumption in the Turkish beer market, the domestic sales volume of our Turkey beer operations was in line with previous year at 6.6 mhl, assisted by the sales volume growth in the fourth quarter of 2006.

• The estimated contraction of the beer market in Turkey due to above mentioned factors, and the over performance, resulted in a market share gain in 2006, up at 82% vs. 80% in 2005.

• Including the export volume, which was also maintained at 0.5 mhl in 2006, the total sales volume of beer operations in Turkey was realized at 7.1 mhl.

• In order to further satisfy the consumers’ preferences Anadolu Efes has included “Efes Ice” and “Marmara Kırrmızı” in its product portfolio in 2006.

Denmark & Poland: Royal Unibrew A/S acquires Polish brewery Browar Lomza

Danish brewery group Royal Unibrew A/S announced it has agreed to acquire Polish brewery Browar Lomza Sp zoo from Przediebiorstwo Przemyslu Spozywczego Pepees SA, Nordic Business Report Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge reported February 15.

The acquisition price is PLN126m, in addition to which Royal Unibrew will assume debt of PLN16m.

Browar Lomza, based in Lomza in northeastern Poland, recorded sales of 630,000 hectolitres in 2006, achieving revenues of PLN91m.

Forge valuable relationships at The World's Only IP Communications Development Event. Communications Developer Conference is May 15-17, 2007 in Santa Clara.

The acquisition will significantly strengthen Royal Unibrew's position in Poland and will also enable considerable synergies within sales, production, distribution, administration and purchasing.

The transaction is conditional on approvals from the Polish competition authorities.

Royal Unibrew, headquartered in Faxe in Denmark, produces, distributes, markets and sells beer, malt and soft drinks in 65 markets worldwide. The group has some 2,200 employees and breweries in Denmark, Lithuania, Latvia and Poland. Royal Unibrew is listed on the Nordic Exchange in Copenhagen.

Belgium & USA: InBev, Anheuser-Busch shares rose after a reported merger talk

Shares of Anheuser-Busch and Belgian-Brazilian brewer InBev climbed after a Brazilian newspaper reported the two have held preliminary merger talks to create what would be a worldwide brewing giant, MarketWatch reported February 15.

According to the report in Valor Economico, which cited an unnamed source, InBev is keen to hold talks about joining with the maker of Budweiser since its market capitalization surpassed that of Anheuser-Busch's at the turn of the year.

Anheuser-Busch's market capitalization as of Wednesday was $38.6 billion, while InBev, which brews Stella Artois, Brahma and Beck's among others, was $41.9 billion (32.3 billion euros).

The two would be complementary, with InBev focused on Latin America, Canada and Europe while Anheuser-Busch is the dominant producer in the stagnant U.S. market and also has sizable Mexican operations.

"Strategically, an Anheuser-Busch/InBev tie-up would be positive as the new entity would combine the largest U.S. brewer with the largest international brewer by volume," said Bryan Spillane, an analyst at Banc of America Securities, in a note to clients.

Anheuser Busch shares climbed 3.2%, or $1.62, to $51.85 in opening trading.

InBev rose as high as 10%, and in afternoon Brussels trades had gained 4.2% to 52.90 euros.

The newspaper said Anheuser-Busch ...

Japan: Asahi Breweries denies merger with Sapporo

Japan's Asahi Breweries Ltd. denied a newspaper report saying it had proposed an integration with rival beer maker Sapporo Holdings, which faces a takeover attempt by hedge fund Steel Partners, Reuters reported February 16.

Sapporo shares were overwhelmed by buy orders a day after Steel Partners Japan Strategic Fund (Offshore) L.P. said it was considering launching a tender offer for Sapporo.

Asahi shares rose by as much as 5 percent in the morning to a nine-year high.

The bid price for shares in Sapporo, Japan's third-biggest brewery after Asahi and Kirin Brewery Co. is indicated at 891 yen at midday, 12.6 percent higher than Thursday's closing level.

The Yomiuri newspaper reported that Asahi late last year proposed a business alliance under which the two companies would work together in areas such as product delivery and soft drinks as a first step, then eventually work towards a full integration.

"There has been a report that we have proposed business integration with Sapporo Holdings but there is no truth to this," Asahi said in a statement.

A re-marriage between Asahi and Sapporo, which used to be united in a single company in the early 20th century, would give them a domestic beer market share of over 50 ...

Mexico: Modelo expects a 4% rise in 2007 Mexico sales volume

Top Mexican brewer Modelo, the maker of the popular Corona beer, expects a 4 percent sales volume rise in Mexico and two-digit growth in export volume this year, according to Reuters February 15.

"We have many projects in the export market," the chairman and chief executive, Carlos Fernandez, told reporters. "They will certainly give us an important boost in exports."

Exports of Modelo's (GMODELOC.MX: Quote, Profile , Research) beer, mainly to the United States, are currently growing about three times as fast as national consumption.

Modelo is half-owned by U.S. brewer Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., the maker of Budweiser beer.

The company announced in November plans to build a $520 million brewery in the northern state of Coahuila to meet U.S. booming demand.

The brewery will be built at Piedras Negras, across the border from the town of Eagle Pass in Texas. It will make Corona, Corona Light and Modelo Especial beers, largely for export to the United States.

The new brewery will be completed in early 2010.

Denmark: Carlsberg estimates a 13% increase in operating profit due to higher sales

Carlsberg AS is expected to report a 2006 operating profit of 3.992 bln dkr, up 13 pct from 2005, according to a poll by RB Borsen, AFX News Limited reported February 15.

Operating profit estimates ranged between 3.905 bln dkr and 4.083 bln dkr.

Sales are expected to increase 7 pct to 40.800 bln dkr with estimates ranging between 40.970 bln dkr and 40.432 bln dkr.

Jyske Bank said Carlsberg's own 2006 operating profit estimate of 3.9 bln dkr looked 'conservative' and forecast the figure to reach 4.096 bln dkr.

The bank said Carlsberg's outlook for 2007, especially for its Western European business, will be in focus when the report is released.

Carlsberg has said it hopes to increase its operating margin in Western Europe to 10-12 pct by 2008, and the group's 2007 outlook will give an indication of how close it is to reaching that goal, Jyske Bank added.

“If Carlsberg's management succeeds in proving to the market that they can reach an operating margin of 12 pct in Western Europe, there is still upside potential in the share,” Jyske Bank said.

The Eastern European brewery Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH), of which Carlsberg owns 50 pct, will be Carlsberg's short to mid term growth ...

Malt News
EU: New crop malt prices might increase

It is not all excluded that new crop prices will increase on basis of the tight S/D balance of barley and malt, analysts commented on February 02. The first large brewery groups have decided to enter the new crop market now. We expect large business to develop in the coming weeks.

Barley News
EU: EU will not import barley from Eastern Europe or South America

Any hope that the EU could import barley from Eastern Europe or from South America, has almost completely disappeared. Russia had harvested large quantities of barley with shaky germination, which proves to be a real problem by now. The Ukraine has stopped possible exports since October by its new (no-)licence system.

The South American barley crop, which started quite well in Uruguay and Northern Argentina, produced lower yields and high screenings in the important southern part of the province of Buenos Aires. The remaining export surplus will remain inside South America in all probability.

EU: There is a risk that malting barley supplies of crop 2006 will dry up altogether

EU malting barley markets, which had been inactive since early December and seemed to become slightly weaker, came back to life at the very end of January. New domestic business, reported business and further interest from Russia and rumoured sales to China drove prices back to levels of early December.

There is a risk that malting barley supplies of crop 2006 will dry up altogether, at least the stocks of good two-row spring barley. Maltsters will have to rely more on winter barley and low-quality barley, or they will have to stop production for a certain period. Production stops are indeed reported from Germany.

Australia: Enough barley for maltsters

Malt barley is in short supply across Australia but maltsters are expected to keep production going until the next crops come in, The Weekly Times (Australia) reported February 14.

ABB Grain Victorian logistics manager Peter Sidley said in a good year, Australian maltsters normally consumed about 880,000 tonnes of malt barley and 2.4 million tonnes of raw malt barley was sent for export.

Australia's total production last harvest was only 800,000 tonnes.

This means Victorian maltsters will not be able to source their normal 260,000 tonnes of supply from last year's harvest, Mr Sidley told a barley information night at Warracknabeal recently.

''This year, there will be limited choice of sourcing barley and they (maltsters) will be using old stocks as long as they can,'' Mr Sidley said.

He said it was not known exactly how much carryover remained from Victoria's 2005 bumper malt barley harvest.

Another unknown is just how grain up to 22 months old will perform in a malthouse.

One solution to the supply shortage will be imports of malt barley from Western Australia, which had a better year than the eastern states.

Mr Sidley said it was not desirable to import malt barley from overseas and was unlikely this season.

Europe: Scandinavian malting barley market situation

After quiet New Year holidays in Europe and Russia market came back slowly around mid January and apart from general buying interest in West- and Central Europe the Russians decided to cover some of their needs for the spring months and the first July material, according to H. Abildstrom & Co ApS February 15.

"Record after record is being hammered down in the historical data files. January: a) wettest since 1873 (when Denmark began measuring). b) temperatures average 5 deg C or 0.1 deg above the previous record. Upto now the only month ever beating two records. We ( DK and South Sweden and parts of Finland) had winter in week 4, then mild again, then winterish week 6. Forecast: 7 days above zero in south Sweden and DK. Further north we are talking about (the usual) minus 25-30 deg c. with single days minus 12-15 only.

The winter crops have survived so far and apart from some new lakes on flooded fields we see lots of green and well advanced barley and wheat. In fact so well advanced that a longer period of minus f. inst 15 deg would unavoidably cause some winter kill unless snow cover turns up first."

Maltsters have ...
