Brewery News
Czech Republic: Budejovicky Budvar may be put up for sale

Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar NP, which has been fighting a legal battle with Anheuser-Busch Cos., may eventually be put up for sale, The Associated Press reported February 22.

The process would depend on the outcome of the trademark dispute with St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, Czech Agriculture Minister Petr Gandalovic, whose ministry is in charge of the state-owned company, said Wednesday.

"It is not on the agenda now, but the Cabinet will definitely discuss it," he said.

Until now, various Czech governments have said there were no plans to privatize the brewer.

Anheuser-Busch and Budvar are disputing the Budweiser or Bud trademarks in dozens of countries.

The St. Louis brewer started using the Budweiser name in 1876, 19 years before the Czech brewery opened. But the Czechs say Budweiser refers to Budweis, the original name of the city where Budvar is located, and they have right to use this name.

On Tuesday, Trade Minister Martin Riman suggested that Budvar could be sold to help cover a fiscal budget gap. He estimated the value at between $935 million and $1.4 billion.

A-B wouldn't comment on whether the brewer is interested in Budvar, saying it doesn't comment on speculation.

Africa: East African Breweries reported a 14% growth of pre-tax profit in 2006

East African Breweries has posted a pre-tax profit of 5.3 billion shillings for the six-month period ending 31st December 2006, KBC reported February 23.

The profit represents a 14 percent growth on 4.6 billion shillings posted for a similar period the previous year.

Group commercial director Chris Caldwell says the company has earmarked 1.4 billion shillings as interim dividends to its shareholders at a rate of 2 shillings and 15 cents.

The company increased earnings per share by 11 percent to 4.57 shillings.

EABL operates in three East African countries that contributed as follows to the pretax profits; Kenya 4.3 billion shillings, Uganda 600 million shillings and Tanzania 400 million shillings.

Speaking at a Nairobi hotel during the half-year results announcement, Caldwell said increased marketing campaigns; better mix of brands and a growth in beer volumes drove the increase in profitability.

This year, Caldwell said the company will further increase investments in marketing and improve distribution of spirits to increase their sales in addition to building a new bottling line in Kenya to boost its growth.

Bulgaria: Pleven company invests in a new brewery

Local company Didi Puhi said it is building a new beer factory in its home town of Pleven, Northern Bulgaria, Dnevnik published February 23.

The brewery, located on a 0.18 ha plot in the Pleven industrial zone, should begin operation by mid-May.
The beer production will license Czech technology and will be based on Czech malts. Annual output is seen at 200,000 hectoliters.

Company owner Asparuh Lalev did not reveal the brand under which the output will be marketed. He said the brand will be regional and will not be distributed nation-wide.

The talk of possible resurrection of beer production in Pleven started 2 years ago when InBev, the world's biggest brewer by volume, shifted its regional operations from the local Plevensko Pivo brewery to production facilities in Southern Bulgaria.

Didi Puhi is a licensed grain trader and importer of malt products.

Estonia: Highly successful year for Saku Õlletehase with 18% up in beer sales and 52% up on net profit

According to the Estonian Breweries Association, the Estonian beer market grew by 3% in 2006, amounting to 130 million litres, accordin to company’s news room, February 20. The growth in the beer market has slowed down considerably from 2005, when the market grew by 14%. The main reason for the slowdown was the decreased sales to tourists.

In a year, Saku Õlletehase AS increased its share in the Estonian beer market from 44.6% to 46.5%, selling the total of over 60 million litres of beer in Estonia. In strengthening its leading position in the beer market, Saku Õlletehase AS concentrated mainly on developing the market share in the profitable premium and mainstream beer segments in 2006.

In the most profitable segment, the premium segment, Saku Õlletehase AS increased its market share from 57% to 67%. The main growth drivers were the successful sales of Saku Kuld, Saku On Ice and Carlsberg. The high-season growth was also facilitated by the premium class lemon flavoured beer drink DLight launched at the beginning of summer.

In the highly competitive mainstream segment, which is dominated by local quality beer brands with the largest marketing support in Estonia (Saku Originaal, Rock and A. Le Coq Premium), Saku ...

New Zealand: DB Breweries’ volumes 10% up but price wars hit margins

DB Breweries, for fiscal 2007, is tracking to meet last year's net profit, and has had a 10 per cent improvement in beer volumes during the summer, managing director Brian Blake says, according to The Dominion Post, February 19.

However, while volumes improved, margins were slashed during an 18-month price war between DB and key competitors, he said.

DB is 100 per cent owned by Singapore-based Asia Pacific Breweries, in turn 42.5 per cent owned by Dutch-based Heineken. Since delisting in September 2004, it has not reported a New Zealand bottom line result.

APB disclosed that in New Zealand in the first quarter to December 31, 2006, DB's product volume grew by 12 per cent.

Mr Blake said that in the four months to January 31, beer volumes were about 10 per cent ahead of the same period a year earlier, despite a cool summer. But because of lower margins as a result of price competition, the full-year net profit was on track to match last year.

APB said DB's profit before interest and tax declined by 12 per cent in the first quarter. DB South Island regional manager Stu Hall said the Christmas period had been perhaps the toughest ever ...

India: Anheuser-Busch and Crown Beers India Ltd. to form a joint venture to enter India beer market

Anheuser-Busch International Inc. and Crown Beers announced both companies have agreed to a joint venture to brew, market and distribute Budweiser and other brands in India, according to A-B’s press release, February 22.

The joint venture will operate under the name Crown Beers India Ltd., and includes a new 500,000-hectoliter brewery in the southern city of Hyderabad. The state-of-the-art brewery will be completed in March 2007.

“International expansion is a key part of Anheuser-Busch’s growth strategy, and while India is a small beer market today, it is growing rapidly and has tremendous long-term potential,” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of Anheuser-Busch. “This joint venture with Crown brings the experience and skills of both companies together with a world-class brewery to introduce Budweiser to beer drinkers in India.”

Both Anheuser-Busch and Crown Beers will have 50% ownership of the joint venture and will collaborate on all local management, marketing and sales decisions. Crown Beers India Ltd. is expected to employ more than 150 people. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Budweiser is one of the most popular beer brands in the world and always is associated with unmatched quality and freshness,” said K.V.D. Prasad Rao, joint managing director, ...

Barley News
World: World barley trade in 2007 is forecast by IGC to decrease by 17.9%

The International Grains Council (IGC) estimates the world barley crop at 139.1 million tonnes, unchanged from last year, but 15 million tonnes lower than the last good crop of two years ago, as per IGC’s latest report published at the end of January 2007.

World trade is forecast at 15.1 million tonnes versus 17.8 million tonnes a year ago. As per IGC the world's largest importer of feed barley, Saudi Arabia, will purchase only 5.5 million tonnes, which is disputed by the trade. Chinese malting barley imports are expected to be 1.7 million tonnes after 2.141 million tonnes in the calendar year of 2006.

Australia: Barley growers receive AU$20m for deliveries to 2005/2006 ABB extended pool

South Australian and Victorian barley growers will begin this week receiving fourth distribution payments for grain delivered to ABB Grain’s 2005/2006 extended pool and standard loan pool, according to ABB press release, February 22.

The gross value of the distribution will be AU$60/tonne for malting 1 barley and AU$8/tonne for feed 1 barley in South Australia and Victoria. The total value of the gross payments is approximately AU$20 million of which over AU$16 million are direct cash payments.

The payments represent around 26% of the estimated grower return (EGR) for malting barley, bringing the total advanced to 79%; for feed barley the payment is 5% of the EGR, bringing the total advanced to more than 96%.

The following will be factored into the deductions from the above payments: pro rata freight (malting only at 25%) and statutory levies (where applicable). Malting 3 barley payments in South Australia are subject to quality sliding scale adjustments on Sloop and Schooner which, on this distribution, will be 20% of the scale.

ABB executive manager – group marketing, Gary Spiel, said that the malting barley pool has been able to benefit from a deficit in world supply which ABB is looking to capitalise on once Chinese buying ...
