Brewery News
China: Kingway to build a RMB 400 mln brewery in Foshan

Kingway Brewery Holdings Ltd. has announced the building of a brewery in Foshan, Guangdong province at a cost of RMB 400 million, according to China Knowledge, March 7.

In a statement filed to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Wednesday, Kingway said that commercial production will begin in early 2008. The company, which first announced the project in November, established Kingway Foshan in the Mainland to run the new brewery.

With an approximate land area of 158,000 sq m, Kingway Foshan will have a production capacity of 200,000 tons per annum.

Kingway currently has two brewery plants in Shenzhen with a total production of 900,000 tons. Kingway products are sold in more than 20 cities and provinces like Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Hainan and Jiangxi, as well as in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau.

Italy: Carlsberg Italy to concentrate brewing at one plant near Milan

As part of the continuous optimization of the brewery structure in Western Europe, Carlsberg has decided to concentrate its brewing in Italy at the brewery in Varese north of Milan, according to company’s press release of March 6. The brewery will be modernised and the capacity will be increased by 0.5m hl to 1,4m hl. Consequently the brewery in Ceccano south of Rome is for sale.

"Italy is an important market to Carlsberg. As the consumers will realize, we are very dedicated to this market. Thus we will continue to invest in our brands – Carlsberg, Tuborg, Splügen and Poretti among others – and distribution network. But we also need to further modernise and focus our structure", says Senior Vice President Alex Myers, who is responsible for Carlsberg Western Europe.

Carlsberg in Italy:

Carlsberg started brewing and distribution of Carlsberg and Tuborg beer in Italy in 1975. In 1982, Carlsberg acquired 50% of Industrie Poretti, and the remaining 50% were acquired in 2002, whereupon the company became Carlsberg Italia S.p.A.

Czech Republic: Starobrno brewery’s sales up 7.4% in 2006

Czech brewery Starobrno, a unit of the Heineken group, made net profit worth Kc107 million in 2006, the best result in its history despite hefty investment in a new type of bottles, spokeswoman Katerina Eliasova said, according to CTK, March 2.

Starobrno raised its market share in the Czech Republic from 5.1 to 5.3 percent to become the third largest producer in the country with the highest beer consumption per capita in the world.

Sales rose by 7.4 percent year-on-year to Kc1.444 billion. Beer sales in the Czech Republic added Kc75 million to Kc1.287 billion.

The company sold 1.04 million hectolitres of beverages, up 8 percent year-on-year. Beer sales grew by 50,000 hectolitres to 914,000 hectolitres.

Sales abroad reached 185,000 hectolitres. The amount includes 130,000 hl produced within licensed production in the Heineken Slovensko plant in Slovakia.

Exports grew to 55,000 from 41,000 hectolitres and headed above all for Sweden, Austria, Germany, Bulgaria, Russia and Britain.

The brewery invested Kc115 million in 2006. The entire sum was financed from Starobrno's own resources. The brewery plans to complete the reconstruction of its brewing house this year to become one of the most modern breweries in the world, said Eliasova.

Japan: Sapporo beer sales increased after Steel Partners' tender offer bid

Japanese brewer Sapporo Holdings, which faces a takeover attempt by a U.S. fund, said its overall beer shipments in February likely rose more than 10 percent, their first year-on-year rise in 10 months, Reuters reported March 5.

It said the introduction of a new beer-like drink in February boosted sales but that Steel Partners' tender offer bid and extensive media coverage of it may have helped.

"Sales momentum was stronger last month than other months when we launch new products," Sapporo spokeswoman Sariko Tamayama said.

Asked if Steel Partners' takeover bid helped push up sales, she said: "We've been hearing that it might have."

Steel Partners said on Feb. 15 it may launch a tender offer to raise its stake in Sapporo to two-thirds from about 19 percent, triggering media reports of possible "white knight" counter bids from bigger rivals Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Kirin Brewery Co. Ltd.

The offer came a day after Sapporo, maker of Yebisu and Black Label brand beer, introduced new beer-like drink called "Umai Nama". Shipments in the beer-like drink category likely jumped about 50 percent in February from a year earlier, Tamayama said.

Credit Suisse analyst Yukiko Oshima said: "We can't rule out the possibility that there are people ...

China: Kirin acquires 25% stake in Hangzhou Qiandaohu to supply beer to Shanghai

Kirin Brewery Co. has secured a production base in eastern China by purchasing a 25 percent stake in local brewer Hangzhou Qiandaohu Beer Co. and will begin supplying the major market of Shanghai as soon as May, Asia Pulse reported March 5.

The move is part of Kirin's attempts to fortify output and sales in the world's largest beer market by teaming up with local counterparts.

Japan's Kirin spent 305.18 million yuan (US$39.4 million), on the deal, which the companies officially announced on Friday.

On top of its own lineup, Hanghzou Qiandaohu will also make Kirin's beers.

Kirin currently has breweries in the northern province of Liaoning as well as in the south's Guangdong Province.

Australian-New Zealand brewer Lion Nathan had been making Kirin beers in Jiangsu Province and supplying them in eastern China under a licensing agreement. But following Lion Nathan's decision in 2004 to withdraw from the market, Kirin has been supplying eastern China from its Guangdong Province plant.

"We're closer to Shanghai, which is a major market," Kirin Chairman Koichiro Aramaki told reporters. "China is extremely large, so proximity to the market is important. This investment will be a breakthrough for us." Aramaki also hinted the firm may enlist the local brewer's help ...

India: United Breweries and SABMiller increase beer production to meet summer thirst

Expecting a spurt in demand in the summer months (mid-March to mid-July), the two major brewers - United Breweries Ltd (UB) and SABMiller, which together corner around 80% of the beer market - are gearing up to ensure uninterrupted flow of the frothy brew, Daily News & Analysis published March 6. While Vijay Mallya’s UB reportedly plans to up capacity by 50%, SABMiller has been stocking up since January.

“Demand is going up everywhere but growth in the North is particularly buoyant because of structural changes in Haryana and Punjab. Traditionally, beer consumption in the South was higher compared to other regions. The South drinks beer throughout the year, but in the North, beer demand is seasonal. To meet the peak demand, we are increasing both capacity in installed and contract brewing,” said Shekhar Ramamurthy, head of UB’s beer division. SABMiller, which has a current capacity of 42 million cases, also has plans to expand it further.

“We have increased our beer capacity by around 50-60% over the last three years and will add more this year. It is an ongoing process. We have extended capacity at Neemrana plant in Rajasthan this year for the peak demand. Since we rely ...

Russia: OJSC Baltika Brewery Company invested $28 mln in its malt-house in Yaroslavl

OJSC Baltika Brewery Company invested $28 mln to its malt-house in Yaroslavl, the company announced, according to AK&M, March 5.

Opening of a plant with a productive power of 50 thousand tons of malt a year has taken place today, 5 March 2007. The construction of the plant was performed in the boundaries of a new program aiming cost reduction, the company said.

Baltika has been leader of the Russian beer market since 1996. In January-September 2006, the company's net income totalled EUR 260.6 mil, which is 34.8% more y-o-y. Its revenues grew by 77% to EUR 1.338 bn, its gross profit - by 30.2% to EUR 727.4 mil, EBITDA - by 85% to EUR 440.9 mln. The main brands are Baltika and Arsenalnoe. The company owns 10 breweries and 4 malt-houses in 9 regions of Russia. The principal shareholder is Baltic Beverages Holding AB (ÂÂH) that holds 86.32% of Baltika's authorized capital stock and 91.48% of voting shares.

EU: Most maltsters are sold out, and brewers restrict their old crop purchases to an absolute minimum

The malt campaign of 2006/07 continues slowly and painfully, according to market analysts. Prices well above EUR 400,- ex works are at least EUR 50,- higher than malt offers for crop 2007. Most maltsters are sold out, and brewers restrict their old crop purchases to an absolute minimum. Activity in new crop malt is large. Domestic brewers are nervous, do not want to repeat last year’s mistakes, and have covered already 25 – 30 % of their 2008 demand.

Prices for 2rs malt, delivery in 2008, CPT breweries, have risen from EUR 365,- to 375,-/380,- in recent weeks. Export business has accelerated as well in February, prices reflecting levels of domestic markets, EUR 375,- FOB in bulk in vessel, ER 390,-/395,- FOB in bulk in container. Business has been reported to Japan, Central America and several African states, Venezuela in the market to buy.

EU: Malt exports lag far behind last year’s numbers

Licence bookings by the end of February are 1.208 million tonnes, 222,000 tonnes behind the pace of 2005/06. If the rhythm of export shipments remains unchanged till the end of the crop year, the final figure may be 1.8 million tonnes versus 2.18 million tonnes a year earlier.

The reasons are known: a lower malt production in the EU, smaller purchases of many brewers, some small losses to competitor countries. Several 10,000 tonnes sales to Romania and Bulgaria will move from the column “export to third countries” to domestic trade.

Barley News
EU: French and English farmers found the barley prices attractive to plant more spring malting barley this year

French malting barley, basis July 2007, 2rs Prestige/Sebastian, FOB Creil EUR 175,-, FOB Moselle EUR 187,-. 6rw Esterel FOB Creil EUR 150,-, FOB Moselle 160,-. Danish optional 2rs, basis October 2007, FOB seaport EUR 178,-. English 2rs Optic/Tipple, basis October 2007, FOB East/South coast EUR 177,-. German 2rs, delivered maltings, ex harvest EUR 189,-, basis October 2007 EUR 193,-.

All prices of spring barley result in ex-farm prices from EUR 160,- to 170,-. French and English farmers found these levels attractive enough to plant more spring malting barley this year, for Denmark the better markets came too late to prevent massive plantings of winter grains and rapeseed, German farmers seem unconvinced. Bio-gas and bio-diesel industries operate larger capacities in Germany than in the other EU countries.

EU: Spring planting came to a complete stop, when storms and rains hit large parts of Western and Central Europe

The winter has been extraordinarily mild, virtually no winter kill from frost, but various diseases are reported from winter barley areas, market analysts commented on March 2nd.

Spring planting started very early, but came to a complete stop, when storms and rains hit large parts of Western and Central Europe. Estimates are that only 60 % of spring barley have been planted in the Charente, the earliest harvest region of France, no more than 20 % south and 5 % north of Paris. The south and East coast of England report 50 % of spring barley seeded. Plantings in Germany had also started, but remained very small so far.
