Brewery News
Russia: SABMiller to invest US$170 million in a new brewery in Russia

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announces that its Russian operations will invest approximately US$170 million in the construction of a new brewery outside the city of Ulyanovsk, which is located approximately 1000 kilometres East of Moscow, according to SABMiller’s news room, March 26. The city of Ulyanovsk, which lies on the Volga river, enjoys good road and rail links and is home to a number of raw material suppliers.

The new brewery, which will have an initial capacity of 3 million hectolitres, is expected to be operational in early 2009 and will complement the group’s existing brewery in Kaluga, which is located some 180 kilometres south west of Moscow. SABMiller’s business in Russia has enjoyed compound annual volume growth of approximately 30% over the last 5 years, and its Kaluga site has now been expanded to a capacity of 6 million hectolitres. Both breweries will produce SABMiller’s Russian brands, including Zolotaya Bochka (“Golden Barrel”), Miller Genuine Draft and Velkopopovicky Kozel; which together comprise 3 of Russia’s top 10 leading brands in the premium segment.

“Russia remains a strategically important market for SABMiller and this investment will enable us to maintain our strong growth profile in the premium ...

UK: Scottish & Newcastle is rumoured to be a takeover target for its rival Heineken

Shares in the UK's biggest brewer Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) have risen strongly on speculation it may be a takeover target for rival Heineken, BBC posted on March 30. Some £600m was added to the value of the Edinburgh-based brewers, Scotland's third-largest industrial company, on the back of City rumours that Dutch rival Heineken is poised to launch a takeover bid.

S&N, whose brands include Fosters and Kronenbourg, saw its shares rise a further 1% in early Friday trading after having closed up 12.1% on Thursday.

Despite the rumours, analysts were divided on whether any bid for S&N from the Dutch company would be forthcoming. Some brewing industry analysts said Edinburgh-based S&N was vulnerable to takeover as it did not have a big controlling shareholder.

But others said Heineken might be put off by the possibility that, if they make a bid, such a deal may come under close examination by competition regulators, especially in France where both companies dominate. Other commentators speculated whether Danish brewer Carlsberg would be a better fit for S&N, and that the two could potentially look to merge in the future.

The company was the fastest-rising stock on the blue-chip FTSE 100 list of leading shares, ...

Brazil: AmBev to invest $2.4 billion in Brazil over 5 years

AmBev, the Brazilian unit of global brewer InBev, said it would invest about 5 billion reais ($2.4 billion) over the next five years in Brazil to expand in a growing market, Reuters reported March 28.

Brazil's leading brewer made the announcement on Wednesday, the same day it said it would buy local beer company Cintra for $150 million. AmBev already has close to 70 percent of the country's beer market.

AmBev said it needed the record level of investment to expand its production capacity, especially in northeastern and central-western Brazil to take advantage of the country's accelerating economic growth and growing beverage market.

"It is the biggest investment announced by the company since Ambev's creation" nearly seven years ago, the statement said.

The Cintra deal, which also serves to expand capacity, will give AmBev control of two plants in the key states of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. It still has to be approved by regulators.

The transaction does not include the Cintra brand name or its distribution network, but AmBev will retain the option to buy those assets at a later date.

The acquisition of Cintra will help AmBev block rival Schincariol's attempts to make headway in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Though ...

World: Beer is the World's most popular beverage

AC Nielson, a company that does international marketing anyalsis, recently carried out a survey which revealed that the world's most popular beverage is beer, Associated Content published March 26. The second and third most favourite beverages in the world come as no surprise. In second were soft drinks and in third came wine.

Beer consumption around the world is soaring. One reason for the increase of beer being drunk is that it is now available to massive markets where it had previously been banned. Two to the countries with the highest rise of beer sales are China and Russia, both countries were beer was previously was restricted.

At the moment the US is the largest producer of beer in the world. However this expected to change within the next five years. It is thought that China will over take the US. Since 1995 the consumption of beer in China has risen by 88 percent. The Chinese economy has opened up and due to the potential of the beer market in the country, a number of international beer brewers built or bought shares in plants in China. Anheuser-Busch has bought a 30 percent share of the most established Chinese brewer, Tsingtao. At the ...

Peru: "Big Cola" maker eyes beer drinkers

Peruvian multinational beverage maker Ajegroup, which makes its Big Cola soft drinks in eight nations, says it's poised to enter the beer market, starting in its home country, its chief executive said, according to Reuters, March 22.

Speaking at the Reuters Latin American Investment Summit, Angel Ananos said Ajegroup would invest $35 million this year in the beverage company's strategy to expand into brewing beer.

Ajegroup initially is aiming for a tenth of Peru's beer market. Calling it feasible, he said: "Taking 10 percent of the market that is growing at 20 percent is not too aggressive."

The new beer unit would have the capacity to meet 15 percent of Peru's market, whose size he did not specify.

Privately held Ajegroup is majority owned by the Ananos family.

Peru's beer market, analysts say, is dominated by SABMiller Plc (SAB.L: Quote, Profile, Research)(SABJ.J: Quote, Profile, Research). Its Peruvian unit Backus y Johnston (BKJi.LM: Quote, Profile, Research) posted 2006 sales of 1.569 billion soles ($490 million).

Peru has one of the lowest beer consumption rates in Latin America, making it an attractive market, SABMiller Peru Chief Executive Robert Priday told the Reuters Summit on Tuesday.

Last year, SABMiller invested $102 million in Peru and Priday forecast even more investments ...

USA: Pilsner Urquell earns highest taste rating of top selling imported beers

The new focus on marketing tactics traditionally used by wine producers is prompted by the Beverage Testing Institute (BTI), who recently awarded Pilsner Urquell a score of 93 points (out of 100)—the highest rating ever given to a pilsner style lager, Business Wire reported, March 29. This rating places Pilsner Urquell at the “exceptional” level, atop some of the most well known import lager brands.

The ultra-premium imported beer Pilsner Urquell is taking its place among other top-rated brands in the liquor department. The Czech Republic import, the beer that invented the pilsner category, will be showcased utilizing a points rating system and with suggested food pairings.

Sales figures back up the brand’s strategy, as import beer sales are rising at a faster rate than those of wine. According to the Beer Institute, import beer sales were up nearly 15 percent last year, while the Nielsen Company reports wine sales increased 7 percent in 2006.

“We are finding that the wine aficionados who savor the total sensory experience also enjoy Pilsner Urquell’s deep golden hue and delicate malt/hop balance,” said Evan Cohen, U.S. brand manager for Pilsner Urquell.

In the typical week, according to Research International, more than 55 ...

Canada: Ottawa farmers to end CWB's barley monopoly

Ottawa will move to end the Canadian Wheat Board's monopoly on barley sales from Western Canada by August 1 after most farmers voted against keeping the traditional system, Agriculture Minister Chuck Strahl said, according to Reuters, March 28.

The government will soon begin work on changing the Canadian Wheat Board regulations to open up barley marketing by the new crop year, Strahl said.

"You can't misinterpret this. Farmers want choice on barley," Strahl said of the results of a plebiscite organized by the federal government.

He said more than 29,000 farmers or slightly more than half of eligible voters mailed in ballots, with a total of more than 62 percent voting to end the monopoly.

Strahl said 48.4 percent voted to make the CWB an optional agency, and 13.8 percent voted to remove the CWB from barley sales altogether.

Another 37.8 percent of farmers voted to keep the CWB's monopoly on barley sales to maltsters and export markets, Strahl said.

The CWB is one of the world's largest grain marketers and has often been the focus of attacks by the United States and European Union, which argue it distorts international trade.

The agency, which has a marketing monopoly on western ...
