Brewery News
China: Anheuser-Busch to build a brewery in Guangdong Province to support growth of Budweiser and Harbin brands

Anheuser-Busch announced it will build a greenfield brewery in Foshan to support the significant growth of Budweiser and Harbin premium brands throughout China, according to companys’ press release of April 3.

Anheuser-Busch is doubling Budweiser’s distribution in China over the next five years by expanding to 100 new cities each with a population of at least 1 million people. These markets will make Budweiser available to an additional 150 million potential beer drinkers. Anheuser-Busch also plans to introduce Harbin premium brands to 33 new markets in 2007.

The strong growth of Anheuser-Busch brands in China over the past 10 years combined with the planned expansion to new cities signals the confidence the international brewer has in the Chinese beer market. The construction of the new Budweiser Brewing Foshan Co. Ltd. ensures Anheuser-Busch has sufficient supply as the company strengthens its position in China.

In 2006, China’s beer market grew nearly 15%, the third consecutive year of double-digit volume growth. Additionally, Grupo Modelo named Anheuser-Busch the importer of Corona Extra and its other brands in China.

“As the largest-volume and fastest-growing beer market in the world, China remains one of our most important international priorities,” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief ...

Czech Republic: Government to inspect Budvar Brewery

The Czech Government plans to inspect Budvar brewery in order to find out whether its contracts, including the recent distribution deal with long-time US rival Anheuser Busch, are advantageous, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported April 2.

Trade Minister Martin Riman recently said that the deal between the two companies lowers Budvar's value.

The brewery's general manager, Jiri Bocek, countered that it will take at least until September before the contract's benefits could be assessed, the Hospodarske noviny daily reported.

The brewery, which according to Riman's recent remarks has a brand value of between 20 and 30 billion koruny (932 million and 1.4 billion dollars), has been involved in a worldwide legal battle with Anheuser Busch over the Budweiser trademark for almost a century.

In January the two rivals struck a deal in which Anheuser Busch, which is seen as an important bidder in any future privatization, is to distribute Budvar's lager across the United States under the Czechvar brand name.

The Czech centre-right government recently conceded to a possible future sale of Budweiser Budvar, the last major Czech brewery remaining in state hands, in order to raise budget revenues, earlier reports said.

USA: Boston Beer Company signs brewing agreement with City Brewing Company to brew some of its beer in Latrobe

The Boston Beer Company announced that it has signed an agreement with a wholly-owned subsidiary of City Brewing Company to brew some of its beer in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, according to Boston Beer Company’s press release, April 3.

Boston Beer and City Brewing will immediately begin work to upgrade the brewery by purchasing equipment to allow for Samuel Adams' traditional brewing process, use of proprietary yeasts and extended aging time, and beer bottling and kegging. Brewing of Boston Beer products is expected to begin during the second quarter.

"This agreement gives us increased flexibility," said Martin Roper, President & CEO of The Boston Beer Company. "With increased interest from drinkers in high-quality, full flavored craft beers like Samuel Adams, our sales grew 17% in 2006. We felt it was important that we arrange additional brewing capacity to augment what we can brew in our other brewing locations and provide security and flexibility of supply while we continue to review our long-term brewing strategy. We chose the Latrobe site because it has a classic brewhouse and because of our solid partnership with City Brewing at their brewery in La Crosse, Wisconsin dating back to 2002."

This agreement with City Brewing Company is not expected ...

Uzbekistan: BBH’s Sarbast Plus to open brewery in Tashkent in June

The Sarbast Plus joint venture, which is controlled by Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH), is planning to launch production at a brewery in Tashkent in June 2007, a source at Sarbast told Interfax News Agency, March 29.

"We are planning to start production at the start of the season in June," the source said.

The construction of the brewery is in its final stages. "Technological equipment is being installed, and is 80%-85% completed," the company representative said.

The brewery will produce one new local brand in the premium segment to be sold in the country - Sarbast, which was developed with the use of European technologies.

The joint venture is not planning to produce the traditional BBH brands.

BBH and Sarbast Plus set up the Sarbast Plus joint venture in 2006. BBH has a 75.1% stake in the joint venture, while the Uzbek company owns 24.9%.

The new company is building a $59-million brewery in Tashkent. The brewery has projected production capacity of 1 million hectoliters of beer per year.

BBH said beer consumption in Uzbekistan, which has a population of 27 million, averages about ten liters per person per year. The Uzbek beer market has been developing steadily in recent years.

Barley News
Scandinavia: Barley prices reach highest levels in the history

Malting barley prices reached highest level in newer history, according to Scandinavian Malting Barley report released by H.Abildstrom & Co ApS, April 4.

After a lively February and partly March, demand has cooled off slightly. Old crop is taken up, where and when absolutely needed and Danish parcels with “biased” specifications for protein and germinative energy have found homes. Seems we could be running out of Prestige, while other varieties still sporadically available. New crop traded with record volumes (at this time of the year) probably 65% of the anticipated production.

Sweden has been literally out of the market as sellers this season. Only well treated and separated smaller parcels mainly from South Sweden have been shipped, respectively delivered to domestic maltsters. On the contrary, the Swedes have been very active on crop 2007 and contracted considerably more that usual at this time of the year.

Finland did produce some reasonable qualities but the domestic maltsters to a great extent collected the available material. A few“ordinary” (but high pro) parcels were sold to Russia and Baltic states, while more than 20.000 ts intervention barley went to Russia (where germination was intact: probably mainly to become malted). New crop sales in Finland ...

EU: The impact of the growth of bio-fuels production on malting barley

Jacques Fidelle of JF Consultant reported on the impact of the growth of bio-fuels production on cereals, oilseeds crops and malting barley, during the barley, malt & beer conference organised by Roger Martin International in Budapest on March 28-30.

Bio-fuels represent the new farming outlet. There will be an increased competition for acreage between food, feed and energy crops. The petroleum prices are due to increasingly influence grains and oilseeds markets, agricultural prices are becoming oil driven. In the USA the ethanol production capacities currently operating and underway (i.e. excluding new projects) will already need a corn supply in excess of 100 million tons or one third of the current corn USA yearly production.

In Europe, the 2010 objective of 5,75% incorporation of bio-fuels in road fuel consumption is due to propel the energy crops acreage from today 7% of the arable land up to at least 16%, would this be at all possible. Malting barley users are recommended to pay the right price to the farmer, contract grow and make use of the winter malting barley potential.

Australia: 2006/07 barley pools closed, new pools opened

ABB Grain has closed its 2006/07 No.2 malting and feed barley pools, with a No.3 pool open to receive late deliveries or transfers of warehoused grain, according to company’s news room, April 2.

The No.2 pools closed with gross indicators of $333-$338/t for malting 1 barley and AU$229/t for feed 1 barley. The No.1 pools, which closed on 24 January 2007, have current gross pool indicators of AU$338/t for malting 1 barley and AU$246/t for feed 1 barley.
ABB’s executive manager group marketing, Gary Spiel, said the No. 2 pools were closed to protect the equity of growers who had delivered into them, in line with recent market conditions and expectations.

“What we are seeing at the moment is an expected return to normal production globally, that will see prices coming off. This is likely to occur in the absence of significant adverse weather conditions,” Mr Spiel said.

“New crop northern hemisphere prices are being quoted at a discount to old crop prices, a trend which is also becoming evident in the domestic market. With the potential on-set of normal seasonal rains we may see prices start to decline.

“The recent increase in the exchange rate – today hitting ...
