1. Industry news
Foster's, the Australian wine and beer giant, has bought the Vietnamese Song Han brand and its Danang brewery for A$8m (US$4.6m). The acquisition will double the capacity of Foster's existing Danang brewery and meet growing regional demand for its product.
On July 1 the UK's largest brewer Scottish and Newcastle (S&N) declared an unexpected increase by 3.5% of its full-year pre-tax profits of GBP442.3m (US$677.1m).
The value of last year profits was GBP 428m. The profits forecasts were made around GBP 431-445m. However, its market shares slipped, since S&N said that they were continuing to look at releasing cash from its pub assets.
Robert Cain & Co, a UK unit of the Danish brewery Bryggerigruppen, is going to be sold to Stanhill Investments and RC Brewery , investment companies. Bryggerigruppen supposes to gain EUR 1,35 mln and therefore end up 2002 with a pre-tax profit of about 33.4 mln EUR up to 38.8 mln EUR.
Scottish & Newcastle is intending to make an investment in Mythos Breweries SA - a brewing subsidiary of John Boutari and Son Holding SA, Greek company listed in beverage business - by paying GBP16m cash for 46% quote in Greek beer business, number two in the market. The transaction is going to be realized in August 2002.
Sleeman Breweries Ltd, Canadian beer company, has entered a long term agreement with Royal Grolsch N.V. They will sell, market and distribute the brand, which was formerly distributed by Rollick Beverage Co. of Aurora, Ontario.
Sleeman Breweries Ltd will purchase these rights from Rollick Beverage Company Inc. on the basis of a combination of cash (C$6.96 million) and Sleeman common stock (C$2.5 million). The cash payments will be made in installments till July 1, 2006.
In spite of the indifferent reaction of UK analysts about 3.5% increasing in last year pre-tax profits of Scottish & Newcastle beer Company , was noticed that S & N is looking for the opportunities into the huge German beer market, the largest beer market in Europe.
A report from the Herald said that S&N is looking for acquisition opportunities in the German beer market, the largest beer market in Europe, where 101 million hecto-litres of beer are drunk every year.
2. Malt market and prices.
The world beer industry has definitely covered it's malt demand for 2002. EU brewers except the British industries, have purchased over 90 % of their needs for 2003. During the month of June, Heineken covered its needs for the next year.
Export business for 2003 is still very slow. Inquiries from Latin America, Japan, the balkans have not led to business yet. South Africa covered a small quantity of EU 2row Spring barley malt.
Prices in domestic and export markets were around EUR 280,- for Spring and EUR 250,- for Winter barley malt, delivered to domestic stations or FOB, (in bulk)respectively.
