USA: Craft beer varieties are outpacing Bud Light, Miller Lite, wine and spirits

Fuller-flavored "craft" varieties, once shunted aside, have now become the brewing industry's healthiest segment, outpacing Bud Light, Miller Lite, wine and spirits with a 17.8 percent increase in supermarket sales last year, according to Information Resources Inc., Star Telegram published May 4.

Their growth in recent years has prompted the typically small, independent craft brewers to bring out more brands, including seasonal ones, and expand their territories. North Coast Brewing Co. of Fort Bragg, Calif., for instance, has found a market in Scandinavia.

The big industrial brewers Anheuser-Busch, Coors and SABMiller, stung by stagnating sales of their top brands, are responding by investing in their tinier rivals, creating their own craftlike brews and importing more brands.

For beer enthusiasts, it means more choice.

Hall's Grocery in Colleyville carries more than 650 beers and claims to have the state's biggest selection. Central Market in Fort Worth and United Market Street in Colleyville each offer more than 300 brands. Bars such as the Flying Saucer and the Ginger Man offer dozens of draft beers.

Mexico: Modelo’s 1st quarter net profit up 21%

Mexican brewer Modelo, maker of the popular beer Corona, posted a 21 percent rise in first-quarter net profit after domestic sales rose smartly, Reuters reported May 2.

Modelo said on Wednesday its January-March net was 2.396 billion pesos ($217 million), up from 1.978 billion pesos a year earlier.

Revenue rose 24 percent to 16.125 billion pesos, as domestic sales volumes rose 4.5 percent in the quarter from a year ago.

Export volumes, mainly to the United States, fell 3.9 percent in the first quarter. Modelo said the decline was due to buyers building up inventories in the fourth quarter.

Shares of Modelo, half owned by U.S. brewer Anheuser Busch Cos Inc. (BUD.N: Quote, Profile , Research), ended Wednesday up 3.23 percent at 57.78 pesos, close to 12 month highs.

Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries announces new appointments in its senior management team

Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd is pleased to announce, on May 4, the following changes in its senior management team with effect from 1 July 2007:

Dr Les Buckley, 46, will focus on his role as Regional Director, Southeast Asia/Oceania; a role which he has undertaken since December 2006 and relinquish his responsibilities as Director, Group Commercial. As Regional Director, Dr Buckley will be responsible for the profitability of key business units and business development activities in Malaysia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Mongolia. Dr Buckley has been with the Group since 1989.

Edmond Neo, 42, who is currently the General Manager of Asia Pacific Breweries Lanka Ltd, will be taking on the position of General Manager, Group Commercial. He will be responsible for the brand development of all the Group’s brands globally including its flagship brand, Tiger, as well as Anchor, ABC Stout and Baron’s Strong Brew. Mr Neo possesses extensive experience in regional marketing and commercial operations, having spent several of his 15 years in the Group working in its breweries in Singapore, New Zealand, Cambodia and Sri Lanka.

Costa Rica: SABMiller wraps up Pepsi sales to improve beer’s image in the region

Brewing giant SABMiller has wrapped up the sale of its Costa Rican Pepsi franchise as it neared the end of a housekeeping process at its Latin American acquisition, Bavaria, Business Day published May 3.

SABMiller sold its Pepsi bottling operations in Costa Rica to Cerveceria Costa Rica, a subsidiary of Florida Ice and Farm Company. The brewer acquired the Pepsi operation when it bought Bavaria for $7,8bn in 2005, which provided it with access to Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Panama.

Spokesman Nigel Fairbrass said the group disposed of the Pepsi operation as part of a tidy-up campaign to sell noncore assets it inherited in 2005. The group was focusing on improving beer’s image and on entrenching its portfolio in the region.

SABMiller, which posted revenue of $15,3bn in its past year, operates in more than 60 countries on six continents. Macquarie research head Julian Wentzel said Latin America was expected to contribute a quarter to SABMiller's earnings before interest, tax and amortisation when it presented its results this month.

Romania: URBB invests 1 mil euros to promote Holstein

United Romanian Breweries Bereprod (URBB), the producer of Tuborg and Skol, this year will invest one million euros in promoting the Holsten beer brand, Ziarul Financiar published April 18.

The investment will help sustain the company's growth in sales and consolidate the position of the brand on the market. "In 2006, Holsten witnessed a 70-75% increase in terms of the volume of sales against 2005, to more than 100,000 hectolitres. This year we hope our volume of sales will increase by 50% against 2006, and exceed 150,000 hectolitres," stated Shachar Shaine, chairman of URBB. According to the URBB's chairman, Holsten's volume of sales increased 10% in the first three months of 2007 alone, against the same period last year.

Holsten, a brand positioned on the premium segment of the beer market, was taken over by Carlsberg in 2004, entering URBB's portfolio in the summer of 2005. Romania was the first country, after Germany, to be granted a licence to produce it. "We saw that there was room in our portfolio for Holsten, and decided to take over the brand," said Shaine. Belgium: InBev’s Hoegaarden white beer in short supply

The supplies of InBev’s Hoegaarden's white beer have completely dried up at supermarkets Delhaize and Carrefour and at many bars and pubs throughout the country, Expatica News reported May 4.

Not because the beer has been selling so fast, but because InBev is struggling with brewing and packaging problems with Flanders' most popular beer on the terraces.

The unions say moving production of the beer to the Walloon location of Jupille has caused the problems. "The beer they produce there often has to be thrown out because it is not at all fit for consumption. So a lot of the white beer coming from Jupille is being shipped to the Netherlands to be made into pig feed. It really is a crisis," the unions say.

InBev says that a "local" problem with packaging is responsible for the shortage. "We are indeed having difficulties making capacity, but that has nothing to do with any brewing problems in Jupille," says spokesperson Lian Verhoeven.

East Africa: East African Breweries wants to increase market share for Guinness till 60%

Guinness beer, a brand of East African Breweries Ltd (EABL) is pushing for 60% market share volumes by year end, Allafrica reported April 30.

The company early in April 2007 launched a new generation of communication dubbed 'Greatness' last month to further popularise the beer with origins in Ireland among drinkers in Africa.

Ms. Hazel Twesigye, the Guinness brand manager said that her company had moved away from using an extra ordinary man, Michael Powers as an icon to an every day man who, they believed has a drop of 'Greatness' in them.

"We expect to grow our market volumes by about 60%. We are also aware that our volumes will not just grow over night but we believe Greatness will address that," Twesigye said in an interview with one of the local dailies last week.

Uganda Breweries Ltd (UBL), a subsidiary of EABL bottles the Guinness brand in Uganda where over Ush340 million (US$197,101) will spent in media campaigns.

The lucrative beer industry in Uganda is dominated by UBL in Jinja (eastern Uganda) and Nile Breweries Ltd, who both fall among the top tax payers in the country.

Denmark, Sweden & Finland: 2007 barley gained 20 Euros per ton

In spite of above low moisture scenario the fields are in perfect condition in Sweden and Denmark, according to Scandinavian Malting Barley market report of Abildstrom & Co Aps, May 3. The whole region has rather low temperatures now, no wind and extremely high dew/condensation in the morning. All reasons to believe root-system progressing satisfactorily and evaporation very low. Finland had one warm summer-day, thereafter cooling off and blessed with snow only last week-end. Spring sowing of malting barley expected commence in volume as from Saturday/Sunday when weather is looking comfortable and seed beds after rain inviting with prime conditions. Sowing as from week 18 is quite normal for major part of Finland.

MARKET

Crop 2007 barley gained well above 20 € per ton. The rally as we see it was driven by several bullish factors arising simultaneously:

1) Brewers entered malt market for volumes.
2) Maltsters must cover barley right away and entered barley market.
3) Unfortunately they went bang-on into a bad French/German weather forecast.
4) French and German collectors “overreacted” and commenced some wash-outs at scale-up levels, probably and mainly because a huge volume of malting barley has been sold on pre- and frame contracts. Crop 2007 is needed in tons and ... More Info
