Brewery News
Japan: Breweries to assault Asahi with new beers

With beer gardens set to open soon, the nation's leading brewers are drawing up battle plans for an assault on Asahi Breweries Ltd.'s latest beer, Gokuuma, according to Asahi.com, May 10.

By the end of June, major players Kirin Brewery Co., Suntory Ltd. and Sapporo Breweries Ltd. will be fighting it out with Asahi Breweries in introducing a new malty version of "third category" beer.

Previously, that referred to beer that used soy beans, green peas and corn as ingredients instead of malt.

The lack of malt made the beer cheaper due to lower tax, a factor behind the healthy sales. But a growing number of consumers complained that beer without malt is watery.

In October, Asahi launched Gokuuma, the first third-category beer to contain malt. It has a nearly 50-percent malt content.

All the new products combine a mixture of distilled barley and happoshu to add flavor while keeping the price at the same level.

On May 23, Kirin Brewery is scheduled to introduce Ryoshitsu Sozai.

Suntory's Kin-Mugi is expected to hit the market June 19 while W-Dry from Sapporo Breweries will be launched June 27.

Some have dubbed the new beer a "fourth-category" beer because it uses an ...

China: Lawsuit says Arkansas company selling counterfeit Budweiser in China

The maker of Budweiser beer says an Arkansas-registered company is illegally marketing beer in China, using the American brewer's trademarks, The Associated Press reported May 10.

Anheuser-Busch sued USA Bai Wei Group in Pulaski County Circuit Court, seeking an injunction to revoke Bai Wei's corporate charter and require a name change.

The lawsuit also seeks profits Bai Wei made from the alleged trademark infringement and counterfeiting, plus damages and attorneys fees.

Bai Wei (pronounced By Way) is how the Chinese language trademark for Budweiser is pronounced in English, according to the St. Louis-based brewer's complaint, filed Friday.

Bai Wei is a registered Anheuser-Busch mark in markets including China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia. Company officials said Wednesday that the name has been trademarked in China since at least 1995, the year Budweiser entered that market.

The Budweiser brand is marketed in China as super-premium beer and millions of barrels of the beer are brewed there, the lawsuit says. Anheuser-Busch employs about 15,000 full-time workers in China.

Anheuser-Busch says USA Bai Wei has been marketing beer in cans featuring the Bai Wei name and other Budweiser-derived designs in Luoyang, in the Henan province.

USA Bai Wei in early February applied to register as an Arkansas ...

Belgium: InBev announces solid results for 1Q, 2007

InBev, the world’s leading brewer, announced today its results for the first quarter 2007, in its press release, May 10.

- Solid beer volume growth: organic beer sales volume grew +6.7% for 1Q07 year-on-year (yoy), ahead of global industry growth

- Revenue growth again exceeded volume growth: revenue increased organically by 8.9% during 1Q07, as a combination of volume growth and a 1.7% increase in revenue per Hl, or +3.0% eliminating the impact of the change in geographic mix; in line with our objective to increase revenue ahead of volume

- Tight grip on costs remains in place: first quarter cost of sales (CoS) remained under strong control, increasing only 0.1% per Hl in 1Q07 yoy, while operating expenses growth was limited to 2.8% organically. As witnessed over the last quarters, a combination of the benefits of the VPO, ZBB, and more coordinated procurement efforts, continues to positively impact the company’s cost base, keeping cost growth below average inflation

- Sound increase in EBITDA and margins: normalized EBITDA grew organically by 17.8%, leading to an EBITDA margin of 31.5% in 1Q07 versus 29.1% in 1Q06, an organic increase of 236 basis points. First quarter margins expanded due to continued top line growth, nearly flat CoS per ...

Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries achieves strong organic profit growth for 1 half of 2007

Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) closed its first half of the financial year ended 31 March 2007 on a firm note, according to company’s news room, May 11. Group profit before interest and taxation (PBIT) grew organically by 15% or S$20.9 million to S$159.3 million. However, taking into account gestation and net translation losses, PBIT moved down to S$148.6 million, but still resulting in an increase of S$10.3 million or 7% over the first half of the previous year.

Attributable net profit before exceptional items achieved organic growth of approximately 9% to S$84.6 million. Due to gestation and net translation losses, the quantum dropped to S$79.2 million, which was still 2% higher than the $77.9 million achieved for the previous year.

The Directors have recommended an interim dividend of 14 cents per share, 1 tier tax exempt, to be paid on 13 June 2007.

Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB said, "As expected, PBIT and attributable profit before exceptional items for the 6-month period under review grew only at single-digit rates. This was due partly to ...

Bulgaria: Lomsko Pivo set for Junе listing

Local brewer Lomsko Pivo said it would perform a secondary offering of share on the Bulgarian stock exchange in late June, according to Focus News Agency, May 11.

The shareholders have decided to list 20% of the current capital, which stands at 4.5 mln levs. The free float should reach 40% by the end of the year.

Further details about the offering will be announced within days, said Prokopi Prokopiev, manager corporate policy at Enemona, the Kozloduy-based engineering company that owns the brewer through its subsidiary Agro Invest Engineering.

In late March, the media reported Enemona was preparing to shed its majority stake in Lomsko Pivo to concentrate on its core business, the provision of construction and power engineering services related to energy efficiency, as the online English edition of Dnevnik Daily reports.

Lomsko Pivo, with an annual output capacity of 170,000 hectoliters, controls 1.5% of the local beer market with the Shopsko Pivo, Almus, Alma and Ambrosius brands.

An investment budget of BGN 0.8 million has been allocated for the brewer in 2007 to replace outmoded bottling and packaging lines.

Cambodia: Cambodia loses 22 million dollars to beer smuggling in 2006

Beer smuggling cost Cambodia's government 22 million US dollars in lost tax revenue last year, according to an economic think tank, which warned Friday that contraband alcohol was on the increase, AFP reported May 11.

Millions of bottles and cans of beer imported from Singapore and Thailand simply disappeared at the Cambodian border before being taxed, the Economic Institute of Cambodia (EIC) said in a report commissioned by two local breweries, Cambrew and Cambodia Brewery Ltd.

"With weak governance and law enforcement, 'contraband' beer has ... been booming," the EIC said, adding that the smuggled brew accounted for 29 percent of the country's total beer market, far outstripping legal imports at six percent.

The Japanese beer Asahi, the cheapest foreign brand on the market, made up the largest percentage of imported beer, the EIC said.

"It is crucial the government take energetic measures to combat 'contraband' beer, especially along the Thai border," it added.

The losses represent about three percent of Cambodia's total budget revenue, and have wider implications for anyone trying to produce locally, business experts said.

The Swiss foods giant Nestle closed its factory in Cambodia several years ago because its locally produced products could not compete with smuggled goods, according to Bretton Sciaroni, ...

Malt News
World: Virtually all maltsters are sold out for 2007 and very well sold for 2008

Malt call-offs are very good time being, helped by the unusually warm and sunny weather, market analysts commented May 2nd. Sometimes the question is asked, whether there could be a malt hole in summer. Do all brewers have a sufficient cover, and can all maltsters fulfil their commitments?

The other problem seems to be that virtually all maltsters are sold out for 2007 and very well sold for 2008. That is reported from Europe, North America and Australia. But brewers have not covered their total demand for next year.

Could it be true that brewers should just secure their supplies and forget about the price side of contracts? The next few months will show, and in any case for the first time in years not only barley, but also malt markets look very tight indeed.

Barley News
Japan: Sapporo Breweries develops barley to keep beer fresh longer

Sapporo Breweries Ltd said it has developed a new line of barley that keeps beer fresh longer and will start commercial production of the line in Canada in 2008, Kyodo News reported May 11. The company has filed patent applications for the barley line in about 30 countries in a bid to launch a beer material business to earn royalties, it said.

The firm said it has taken eight years to develop the barley that lacks lipoxygenase, or LOX, which causes the flavor of beer to deteriorate. Sapporo Breweries said that in brewing tests the barley was found to reduce the amount of flavor-deteriorating substances in beer to one-third of the conventional level and foam-reducing substances were reduced by half. Sapporo Breweries will serve up to 6,000 glasses of beer made with the barley for 250 yen per glass at its Ebisu Beer Museum in Tokyo from Friday.

China: Australia stopped buying Australian malting barley because of high prices

China has stopped buying Australian malting barley as a worldwide shortage has sent prices soaring, and further sales are unlikely until the next harvest later this year, Reuters reported May 11.

Australia's biggest barley exporter, South Australian-based ABB Grain Ltd., said this week that Chinese buyers were refusing to buy at current world prices.

East coast exporter GrainCorp Ltd. had the same experience, Ole Houe, manager of coarse grains, said on Friday.

Malting barley prices in China have risen more than $100 a tonne to over $300 a tonne this year, causing Chinese brewers to substitute other grains in brewing beer.

"At that level they say it's not economical for us to produce," Houe said. "They use all sorts of substitutes, such as rice, they malt wheat, they make do with a lot of stuff."

This had been triggered by small barley crops in drought-hit Australia, as well as in Europe. Australia would have 100,000 tonnes or less malt barley left to sell from the old crop, even if China was buying, Houe said.

There were also doubts whether Europe would have enough barley to export from its new crop, as shown by a $40 price rise in the last ...
