1. Industry news
Chief secretary of the Union of Bulgarian Brewers, Peter Paunkov, said that Bulgarian beer consumption had dropped by 2% in the first half of 2002 if compared with the same period of 2001 and totaled 1.925 hectoliters. The drop is being attributed to the unprecedented wet weather during May and June, the fact that made the sales not as prolific as other years, a Dnevnik report reveals. Local brewers hope to compensate the week sales of the first half by a successful business in the second half of 2002.
In the mean time Heineken NV, Dutch brewing group, and Greek-registered Brewinvest, co-owned by Greece’s Hellenic Bottling, edge out their main competitor Interbrew in the first half of 2002 by seizing 23.5% of Bulgarian beer market share.
Bavaria, the Colombian brewing group, has declared that it has formally renounced the attempt to acquire Cervecerias Baru Panama S.A., Panama’s second largest brewer, a deal put on in May 2002.
This is the only alternative of Bavaria group followed by the decision of Panama's Free Competition and Consumer Affairs Commission. The Commission explained that Bavaria takeover would inhibit competition and would cost Panamanian consumers up to US$23mln a year in higher beer prices. If the deal had occurred Bavaria group would have become a beer monopolist in Panama, since Bavaria has already owned Cerveceria National, which has 70% of the country’s beer market. By buying Cervecerias Baru Panama SA, which controls the other 30% Bavaria would have definitely created a beer monopoly in Panama.
However, Bavaria said it would continue to follow its international development strategy. The company intends to increase foreign revenues to around 50% of its total income from the present level of 23%.
Yarpivo, Russian brewer, has reported that their sales reached a rise of 41% up to 23.5mln deciliters of beer in the first half of this year. The company also said the sales profits increased by 65% up to Ru2.3 billion. These achievements come from the upgrading of production facilities, Yarpivo reported.
Yarpivo is 60% owned by the BBH beer group, and has a 6% share of the Russian domestic beer market with its main brands Yarpivo and Volga.
In 2001, Yarpivo declared that sales volumes increased by 40% up to 35 million deciliters if compared with 2000 year figures (25 million deciliters) and company net profit rose by 94% up to US$39 million (net profit in 2000 - US$20 million).

La Derniere Heure reported that during 2001 beer makers in Belgium have increased their export volumes up to 5.85 mln hl, which is a rise of 0.45 mln hl if compared to the 2000 export volume..... www.e-malt.com
August Schell Brewing Co., a Minnesota brewer, may purchase Grain Belt Premium, US beer brand, produced by Minnesota Brewing Co., which closed down recently....www.e-malt.com
Greene King, UK leading pub retailer and ale brewer, published its successful results for 53 weeks ended 4 May 2002: an increase of 15% in company turnover from GBP 431.7 mln to GBP 494.5 mln in comparison with last year data.....www.e-malt.com
2. Malt markets and prices.
Malt markets remain rather inactive. Panama purchased 10.000 tons and Brazil keeps asking for offers, but wants to buy below standard price levels of EUR 280,- for 2row spring and 250,- for 6row winter barley malt, FOB seaport. Poor crop prospects in Canada and Australia do not yet influence EU and world malt markets.
