0 USA: Anheuser-Busch executives express confidence in outlook for growth

Anheuser-Busch executives expressed confidence in the company’s growth outlook during presentations given at the company’s BUD Investor Conference held in St. Louis, according to company’s press release, May 22.

“By strategically broadening our U.S. beer portfolio to access high-margin growth opportunities, Anheuser-Busch is much better positioned for growth than we were just eight months ago,” August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of the company, said to investors and analysts. Busch proceeded to outline management’s vision of building Anheuser-Busch into the leading global beer and specialty beverage company. At the core of this vision is producing and marketing the highest quality premium beer and select non-beer beverages in profitable and growing markets, where the company’s competitive advantages can drive sustainable long-term growth and enhance shareholder value.

Senior managers from Anheuser-Busch’s U.S. beer company presented their plans to grow the company’s core trademark brands and actively pursue high-end growth opportunities. The company is making good progress in digesting the series of new growth initiatives recently undertaken and managing the added complexity associated with an expanded portfolio. In citing incremental revenue growth as a key objective, the executives stated that the pricing environment in the U.S. beer ...

0 Hungary: Budvar may use identification of origin for beer in Hungary

Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar can sell beers Budejovicke pivo and Ceskobudejovicke pivo on the Hungarian market using the identification of origin, representatives of Budvar said, referring to a verdict of the Hungarian Supreme Court, CTK reported May 16.

The court rejected once and for all an appeal of Budvar's rival, the US brewing group Anheuser-Busch, which had been seeking lifting the protection for the identification of origin in Hungary since 2001.

The court also confirmed protection for Budejovicke pivo and Ceskobudejovicke pivo in German, English and French languages (apart from the Czech original).

"We have scored a big success in defending our rights," said Budejovicky Budvar lawyer Helena Lejtnarova.

"The verdict has also reinforced the position of our beer which we sell under the name of Budweiser Budvar," she added.

Hungary is one of the top ten export markets for Budvar. It widely sells the light lager beer Budweiser Budvar on the market.

The dispute had nothing to do with the right to the brand name Budweiser. Budvar is the exclusive owner of the brand in Hungary.

Anheuser-Busch and Budvar have been in dispute over their beer brands since 1906.

0 USA: Price is major factor in growing barley

Barley growers in North Dakota, Idaho and Montana say price is the major factor influencing their decision to plant barley, Cattlenetwork reported May 21. The finding was part of a 12-question survey of barley growers in the three states.

The survey was conducted by the Institute of Barley and Malt Sciences (IBMS) at North Dakota State University. The survey was produced by the Idaho Barley Commission, North Dakota Barley Council, Montana Wheat and Barley Committee and IBMS. The survey was sent to 5,000 barley growers in the three states with the help of the North Dakota field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NDASS).

The 12 questions on the survey covered topics such as yield, acreage, transportation, information sources, farming practices, grower support system effectiveness, grower satisfaction levels and factors influencing the decision to produce barley.

Rotation, diseases and yield also were listed by growers as important in their decision to grow barley. Barley typically was ranked as a third crop for most operations. Producers frequently cited price, variety, and planting and harvest times as reasons to produce barley.

Another important objective of the survey was to pinpoint effective education and outreach methods. Growers in Idaho and Montana indicated a need ...
