Brewery News
USA: Anheuser-Busch executives express confidence in outlook for growth

Anheuser-Busch executives expressed confidence in the company’s growth outlook during presentations given at the company’s BUD Investor Conference held in St. Louis, according to company’s press release, May 22.

“By strategically broadening our U.S. beer portfolio to access high-margin growth opportunities, Anheuser-Busch is much better positioned for growth than we were just eight months ago,” August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of the company, said to investors and analysts. Busch proceeded to outline management’s vision of building Anheuser-Busch into the leading global beer and specialty beverage company. At the core of this vision is producing and marketing the highest quality premium beer and select non-beer beverages in profitable and growing markets, where the company’s competitive advantages can drive sustainable long-term growth and enhance shareholder value.

Senior managers from Anheuser-Busch’s U.S. beer company presented their plans to grow the company’s core trademark brands and actively pursue high-end growth opportunities. The company is making good progress in digesting the series of new growth initiatives recently undertaken and managing the added complexity associated with an expanded portfolio. In citing incremental revenue growth as a key objective, the executives stated that the pricing environment in the U.S. beer ...

Vietnam: State bank finances Vinashin to build a brewery

Vietnam’s leading state bank BIDV has agreed to provide the country’s largest shipbuilder Vinashin a credit loan worth US$27 million to build a brewery in northern Ha Nam province, Thanhnien News reported May 23.

Vinashin Beer Joint Stock Company, formed earlier this year, clinched the deal Tuesday with BIDV – formally known as the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam.

The beer plant project is estimated to cost $130 million in total investment – of which the Czech Export Bank (CEB) is contributing 50 percent.

The BIDV and CEB loans are repayable over a 10-year term. The local bank pledged to offer a fixed interest rate for the loan, however, the exact rate was not available.

The project also came as part of an earlier co-financing agreement signed between BIDV and CEB last year, following which the two lenders have committed to provide 70 percent of the total capital for the beer maker.

Also yesterday, Vinashin Beer entered into a deal to buy high-tech beer making equipment from the Czech’s ZVU Potez –for the construction of the brewery, with an annual capacity of 100 million liters.

Hungary: Budvar may use identification of origin for beer in Hungary

Czech brewery Budejovicky Budvar can sell beers Budejovicke pivo and Ceskobudejovicke pivo on the Hungarian market using the identification of origin, representatives of Budvar said, referring to a verdict of the Hungarian Supreme Court, CTK reported May 16.

The court rejected once and for all an appeal of Budvar's rival, the US brewing group Anheuser-Busch, which had been seeking lifting the protection for the identification of origin in Hungary since 2001.

The court also confirmed protection for Budejovicke pivo and Ceskobudejovicke pivo in German, English and French languages (apart from the Czech original).

"We have scored a big success in defending our rights," said Budejovicky Budvar lawyer Helena Lejtnarova.

"The verdict has also reinforced the position of our beer which we sell under the name of Budweiser Budvar," she added.

Hungary is one of the top ten export markets for Budvar. It widely sells the light lager beer Budweiser Budvar on the market.

The dispute had nothing to do with the right to the brand name Budweiser. Budvar is the exclusive owner of the brand in Hungary.

Anheuser-Busch and Budvar have been in dispute over their beer brands since 1906.

World: Good weather favours the beer sales

Beer output throughout the world is excellent. Both the good economic situation in large parts of the world and the mild temperatures in winter and early spring in Europe are co-responsible.

All large brewing groups report larger sales. Official statistics for January/March are: Russia 23,4 Mill. HL, a staggering plus of 31 %. Even Germany, where beer sales had declined for a number of years before 2006, shows a plus of 2,9 % for the first quarter of this year. The additional demand of malt in 2007 will be substantial.

Thailand: Thai Beverage Marketing uses multi-brand strategy to position its brews among diversified segments of drinkers

Thai Beverage Marketing is using a "multi-brand" strategy to position its brews among diversified segments of drinkers, its senior brand manager for beer Sorrakrit Lathitham said, according to Thai Press Reports, May 20.

Parent company Thai Beverage is one of Southeast Asia's largest brewers and distillers. The Singapore-listed company has a market capitalisation in excess of US$4 billion (Bt138.4 billion).

Thai Beverage Marketing said the multi-brand strategy would increase Chang's competitiveness in all consumer segments - from young people to first jobbers and trend-setters to established beer drinkers.

"We want to develop the many sub-brands under the Chang umbrella and penetrate all potential segments," Sorrakrit said.

The "premiumisation" strategy will improve Chang's image by highlighting product quality, he said.

"Our aim is to differentiate the characteristics of Chang Draught and Chang Light from Chang Classic," Sorrakrit said.

Chang Draught is aimed at drinkers aged 20 to 35. Chang Light will be promoted among first jobbers in the 24-to-38 age bracket.

Sorrakrit said 6.4-per-cent Chang Classic would be pitched at established beer drinkers aged over 28.

Archa beer will be positioning as the company's "fighting brand" with a competitive price of between Bt28 and Bt30 a bottle. Chang Classic sells between Bt35 and Bt38 a bottle. It contributes almost ...

Czech Republic: Country's beer output up 3.5% in Q1

Breweries in the Czech Republic produced 4.18 million hectolitres of beer in Q1, 3.5 percent more than a year ago, executive director of the Czech Brewing and Malting Association Jan Vesely said, according to CTK , May 16.

Vesely explained the growth by the mild winter and added that sales grew both on the domestic market and abroad.

Some 722,000 hectolitres were exported in Q1, a growth of 4.2 percent year-on-year, but a slowdown from Q1 2006 when the growth reached 14 percent and the year before with 17 percent.

The fast growth had followed the lifting of trade barriers after the country's entry of the EU.

Output for the domestic market increased by 3.3 percent to 3.46 million hectolitres on Q1.

Last year, breweries in the Czech Republic put out 19.79 million hectolitres of beer, up 3.8 percent from 2005.

This year, output could rise to 20 million hectolitres, Vesely had said earlier.

Romania: Ursus loses about 5% volume increase due to production limitations

Ursus Breweries, number two on the local beer market, last year improved its profit margins, after having increased its turnover by 30% to around 190 million euros, Ziarul Financiar published May 21.

"We estimate we have lost about 5% of our potential volume increase due to our limited production capacity, therefore we could have achieved a 35% increase in turnover," Dieter Schulze, chairman of Ursus Breweries told ZF. "Ursus sales increased by 23% during the last fiscal year (April 2006 - March 2007) against the previous fiscal year, based on a 42% increase in volumes seen in the last half of the fiscal year. The Romanian market had one of the biggest growth rates in Central and Eastern Europe registering a 24% increase, outrun only by Russia, according to information published by SABMiller.

By comparison, SABMiller's sales increased by 7% in Hungary, 13% in Poland and by less than 2% in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia. Schulze specified that the profit margins have improved over the last year, but did not wish to specify the net profit posted by the company on the local market.

Malt News
UK: Multi-million pound expansion for malt house

Simpsons Malt Ltd, the private, family-owned maltster based in Berwick, has announced a multi-million pound expansion to their maltings in the town, The Journal reported May 23.

The company, originally from Alnwick in Northumberland and founded by corn merchant James Parker Simpson in 1866, moved its headquarters to Berwick in 1960 and has built up its malting capacity to its current level of 140,000 tonnes with several investments, starting in 1993.

The company also has sites in Norfolk and Essex and this expansion will bring the total annual malting capacity to 270,000 tonnes. The current chairman is Simon Simpson, the great grandson of the founder.

Tim McCreath, group managing director, said: "Our unique infrastructure, which includes McCreath Simpson and Prentice, has allowed us to work very hard over the past few years to try and bring both sides of our supply chain closer together; our distilling and brewing customers on one side, and our farmer customers on the other.

"We have managed to secure several longer term deals with distillers and a major brewer which has enabled us to announce this investment in line with our strategic objectives going forward.

"There is no question that the price of malt and therefore malting barley has been ...

Barley News
USA: Price is major factor in growing barley

Barley growers in North Dakota, Idaho and Montana say price is the major factor influencing their decision to plant barley, Cattlenetwork reported May 21. The finding was part of a 12-question survey of barley growers in the three states.

The survey was conducted by the Institute of Barley and Malt Sciences (IBMS) at North Dakota State University. The survey was produced by the Idaho Barley Commission, North Dakota Barley Council, Montana Wheat and Barley Committee and IBMS. The survey was sent to 5,000 barley growers in the three states with the help of the North Dakota field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NDASS).

The 12 questions on the survey covered topics such as yield, acreage, transportation, information sources, farming practices, grower support system effectiveness, grower satisfaction levels and factors influencing the decision to produce barley.

Rotation, diseases and yield also were listed by growers as important in their decision to grow barley. Barley typically was ranked as a third crop for most operations. Producers frequently cited price, variety, and planting and harvest times as reasons to produce barley.

Another important objective of the survey was to pinpoint effective education and outreach methods. Growers in Idaho and Montana indicated a need ...

Europe: Barley sowings decreasing every year

Barley sowing surfaces have been continuously decreasing last years, Le Monde published May 23. For German brewers, this is partially due to the lack of profitability regarding wheat and corn. “The trend of barley and malt has been continuously decreasing under the effect of agricultural policy, and the industrial companies has profited of that”, Daniel Huvet, Director of Malteurop International explained. “We have now the levels of fifteen years ago”

Whether the deficit is likely to be covered, barley high prices could be compensated by beer price boosting.

InBev decided to raise its beer price in Germany on May 1.

EU: The business of barley and malt sales of crop 2007 is nervous

The business is understandably nervous, as barley and malt sales of crop 2007 are already very large, and trade and coops wonder, whether farmers will harvest a crop of malting barley and fulfil their commitments towards their buyers.

It is interesting to note that German coops and traders started the panic buying, but French coops followed repurchasing part of their earlier sales.
