China: Carlsberg to set up join venture in western China

Danish brewer Carlsberg A/S and a Chinese partner will invest 500 million yuan ($65 million) in a venture to produce a local brand of beer, the Chinese company said according to Reuters, May 31.

Carlsberg and Lanzhou Huanghe Enterprise Co, based in western China's Gansu province, will set up a brewery in Lanzhou to make Huanghe Beer, an official at the company's board office told Reuters.

A number of global brewers have moved into China's competitive and fast-growing $11 billion beer business, including InBev and Anheuser-Busch.

The plant has yet to be built as the companies are awaiting government approval, the official added.

Carlsberg had said on Wednesday that it hoped construction of the facility would kick off soon.

"After the plant is built, it will raise our annual production capacity from 400,000 tonnes now to as much as 800,000 tonnes," said the Lanzhou Huanghe official, who declined to be named.

Lanzhou Huanghe mainly sells its Huanghe, or Yellow River, brand of beer in western Gansu and Qinghai provinces and the neighbouring region of Ningxia.

Czech Republic: Kc700m state subsidy for Plzensky Prazdroj criticised by small brewers

The daily Lidove noviny LN comments on nearly a Kc700m state subsidy to boost exports of Plzensky Prazdroj, a member of the group SABMiller plc, which is criticised by small Czech brewers, CTK reported May 31.

Beer is one of the best exports and it deserves state support, but the government should mainly invest in Czech breweries, a commentator says.

Small breweries may complain but Prazdroj, and possibly Budvar which, however, is not among those criticising the state support, is much popular abroad and support to less-known local brands simply does not pay off. Prazdroj certainly contributes much more to the budget than the small brewers.

Moreover, the leader on the Czech beer market has pledged to invest Kc1.5bn from its own funds to a new racking room which will create new jobs.

Small brewers lack such funds, and the state does not profit from them as it does from Prazdroj, the paper said.

Still, however, the criticism is legitimate. How the small breweries can compete with the giant if they are put a spoke in their wheels by the state, asks the commentator.

UK: Mystery of disappearing Hoegaarden beer

Mystery surrounds the growing shortage of Belgian wheat beer Hoegaarden in the UK, The Publican reported May 30. Disgruntled licensees have told The Publican that deliveries of the beer have completely dried up, with no explanation why.

Brian Snell, licensee of the Bull Inn in Henfield, Sussex, said he was at a loss as to why his deliveries stopped.

“I’ve been without Hoegaarden for at least two months now,” he said. “I have built it up in my pub for over six years and what annoys me is there has been no apology or letter from the brewer. My various enquiries have just been fobbed off.”

Rob Hoare, licensee of the Hartington in Brighton, says he has had to put a sign up over his bar to explain to customers why he has no Hoegaarden.

“I am not happy about it at all,” he said. “It looked great on the bar – the font had great presence. But the deliveries have just mysteriously stopped. We are now looking to replace it with Kronenbourg Blanc if we can.”

Canada: Commissioner of Competition fails to block closing of beer merger

On March 28, 2007, the Competition Tribunal dismissed the Commissioner of Competition's application for an interim order pursuant to section 100 of the Competition Act (the "Act") to prohibit Labatt Brewing Company Limited from acquiring all of the outstanding units of the Lakeport Brewing Income Fund, Mondaq reported May 30. The Commissioner announced on April 11, 2007 that she will appeal the Tribunal's decision to the Federal Court of Appeal.

The Tribunal's decision in Labatt/Lakeport marks the first time that the Tribunal has considered the current version of section 100, which permits the Commissioner to apply to the Tribunal for an interim injunction to prohibit the closing of a merger where the Competition Bureau has not yet completed its review of the transaction. If upheld on appeal, the Labatt/Lakeport decision will make it more difficult for the Commissioner to obtain interim injunctions under section 100 because it sets a high standard for obtaining such relief. In the result, merging parties who are willing to risk a potential post-closing challenge to their transactions should find it easier to proceed to closing even if the Bureau has not yet finished its review.

Japan: Japanese 'beer' ads targeting kids

A Japanese beverage company is marketing fake alcoholic drinks to children to make them feel grownup and included in the country's culture of group drinking, News.com reported June 1.

The Sangaria Company has been selling its non-alcoholic beer for years and recently expanded its range to include junior versions of wine, champagne and cocktails.

The beer, which is said to taste like apple juice and is available in restaurants in Japan, is packaged in authentic-looking six packs, fizzes and has a head on it.

The ads in Japan, which have appeared on YouTube, show children as young as three sipping the "beer" at parties, singing and swaying to a catchy tune.

In Britain, a spokeswoman for alcohol treatment charity Addaction said: "Marketing fake alcohol to children to make them feel "grownup” could encourage them to experiment with alcohol at an earlier age".

Slovakia: Breweries expect production growth

The first quarter of 2007 went well for Slovakia's breweries, the Sme daily reported on May 29. Beer consumption in Slovakia now stands at some 80 litres per person per year, after falling for four years mainly due to higher consumption taxes.

Beer production is now set to stabilise, however. In fact, brewers even expect an increase. According to Heineken spokesman Roman Krajaniak, beer consumption is now increasing partly thanks to the warm weather, and the breweries have invested in new products and packaging.

Beer exports fell by a considerable 70 percent last year. This fall, however, was partly influenced by the licensed brewing abroad of certain Slovak beers such as Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) and Šariš. Roman Šusták, executive director of the Slovak Association of Beer Producers, estimated that some 45 million litres of Slovak beer were brewed abroad last year.

France: Malteries Soufflet to build a new 130.000 tons malt house

Malteries Soufflet, a Division of the Soufflet Group is going to build a new maltings with a capacity of 130.000 tons in Nogent sur Seine, France, Soufflet announced in a press release, June 1. Nogent sur Seine is home to the head office of The Soufflet Group and a maltings with a capacity of 70.000 tons is already operating in the town. The new construction would therefore increase the site's capacity to 200.000 tons.

The strategic reasons behind the decision to go ahead with this investment are the sustainable supply of good quality malting barley as well as the logistical advantages of being on a river thus allowing a competitive access to our Northern European clients as well as the export market via the Group's installations in the port of Rouen.

The new maltings will mean that Malteries Soufflet France will have a total capacity of 750.000 tons. The Soufflet Group has also just begun the construction of a new maltings in Romania which will have a capacity of 100.000 tons and will begin production in September 2008.

Canada: Barley supply is expected to increase only slightly due to significantly lower carry-in stocks

Barley production is forecast by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) to increase by 20%, due to higher area and yields, but supply is expected to increase only slightly due to significantly lower carry-in stocks, AAFC published on May 29. Slightly higher exports are forecast to be more-than offset by lower domestic use so that carry-out stocks increase by 6%.

The average off-Board feed barley price (No. 1 CW I/S Lethbridge) is forecast to decrease to CA$160/t from CA$165/t expected for 2006- 07.

UK: 2006/2007 export forecast has increased with the closing stock forecast revised lower

The UK barley production estimate 2006/2007 stands at 5.239Mt, down 5% on last season, HGCA posted in its Supply & Demand Report as of 30 May 2007. No changes have been made to opening stocks or imports. Total availability stands at 6.211Mt, down 4% on last season.

H&I use in the barley sector has been increased by 10,000t to 1.712Mt, very similar to last season. The forecast for H&I use of maize is 0.767Mt, unchanged on the previous forecast and up 2% on last season. H&I use in the oats sector has been left unchanged on previous at 0.416Mt (18% higher than last season).

Animal feed use of barley is revised down by 7,000t to 3.024Mt, down 2% on last season. Maize use in the feed sector is placed at 0.437Mt (down 5,000t on previous but 9% above last season) while oats use is placed 0.248Mt, up 4,000t on previous and up 22% on last season.

There are no revisions to seed use for either wheat or barley.

Barley exports and intervention are estimated at 0.485Mt, up 35,000t on the last forecast and 27% below 2005/06. Closing stocks of barley are estimated at 0.829Mt, a downward revision of 38,000t on previous ... More Info
