As a result of this transaction, the market share of Heineken in the Czech Republic will increase to 8%, with total volumes of over 1.6 million hectolitres, improving Heineken’s position in the market to number three.

The transaction, which will be funded from existing cash resources, is expected to be earnings enhancing in 2008 and value enhancing in 2010. The proposed acquisition will be submitted to the relevant competition authorities and is expected to be completed by 1 September 2007. China: Mexico's Modelo faces problems with the pirating of Corona Brand in China

Mexican brewer Grupo Modelo faces a problem with the pirating of its Corona brand in China at a time when the company is working to boost the presence in that market of its most popular export brand, a top company official said, according to Dow Jones, June 14.

Modelo chairman and chief executive Carlos Fernandez told reporters that Modelo, as well as Mexican and Chinese authorities, are working to resolve the matter, "however, the problem is a big one."

He said it was difficult to quantify possible losses to Modelo, which sold 1.5 million crates of Corona in China last year. "Because they're pirate products; we don't know how much is distributed."

A Chinese beer called "Cerono" is sold in the same shape bottle as Corona, and the label is almost identical, except that the brewer is identified as Beijing Cerono Trade Limited Company instead of Cerveceria Modelo.

Fernandez said the company is conducting advertising campaigns in China to encourage people to read the label to make sure they're getting the Mexican beer.

Modelo began expanding the presence of Corona in China this year under an agreement with U.S. partner Anheuser-Busch (BUD), and Fernandez said that agreement is going well. Modelo also began importing China's ...

Switzerland: New beer taxation system

As from 1st July, the beer will be taxed according to its alcohol percentage, Bluewin published June 11. Switzerland is going to apply the same system existent in European Union, but consumers will not be forced to pay more for a beer.

The tax will increase to 16.88 francs per hl for light beer (2.4 -2.8%), 25.32 francs for normal or special beer (4.8 – 5.2%) and 33.76 francs for strong beer (more than 5.8%). The beer with alcohol percentage less than 0.5% is exonerated from tax.

After the reform, only strong and special beers could be 1% more expensive. Tax facilities could reach 40% for breweries which yearly production is under 55,000 hl.

The beer tax yields 100 mil francs per year for the Confederation. The system change is not supposed to bring other incomes.

Japan: Beer shipments jump by 5.2% in May 2007

Domestic shipments of beer and beerlike beverages rose in May for the first time in four months thanks to a rise in "third-category" beer, according to industry data, Kyodo News reported June 13. Overall shipments rose 5.2% compared with a year ago to 40.94 million cases, according to beer producers and the Brewers Association of Japan.

Shipments of third-category beer, mostly nonmalt sparking drinks that taste similar to beer, soared 70.5% compared with the previous year, when sales slumped after the government imposed a higher tax levy on them. In contrast, shipments fell 4.2% for real beer and 4.7% for the low-malt quasibeer known as "happoshu."

Bulgaria: Beer sales increased by 18.4 per cent for first five months of 2007

Beer sales in Bulgaria reached 1.959 million hectolitres from January to May 2007 according to Union of Brewers in Bulgaria (UBB) statistics, Sofia Echo reported June 15.

These levels represent an 18.4 per cent increase in comparison to data for the same period of 2006, when sales totaled 1.655 million hectolitres, investor.bg reported.

Beer consumption growth slowed down in the end of the period.

Bulgarian brewers sold 592 934 hectolitres in May 2007, 10.71 per cent less than in May 2006.

UBB statistics are made on the sales of brands Zagorka, Kamenitsa, Carlsberg Bulgaria, Bolyarka, Lomsko Pivo and Agrima.

Zagorka registered highest sales figures fro the five-month period totaling 621 590 hectolitres. The company sold 171 572 hectolitres in May, which placed it second for the month after Kamenitsa.

Kamenitsa ranks first in beer sales for May. It sold 188 068 hectolitres beer in May and 558 518 hectolitres for the entire period.

Beer sales registered by Karlsberg Bulgaria for the entire period total 531 165 hectolitres and 149 232 hectolitres for May.

France: Kronenbourg sells 'Maitre Kanter' taverns

To further concentrate on its beer production, France's leading brewery Kronenbourg, part of Scottish & Newcastle, has sold its restaurant chain 'Maître Kanter' to the Flo Group, Flexnews reported June 12.

Flo Group already owns famous French restaurant chains such as Hippopotamus, Bistro Romain and Tablapizza.

The Group intends to continue opening new ‘taverns’ in France, it said in a statement. The Group adds that Kronenbourg will continue to supply the restaurants with its beer.

Meanwhile, activities in Scottish & Newcastle's Kronenbourg brewery in Obernai, eastern France, were resumed on Friday after workers ended a 4-day strike over compulsory overtime hours.

Belgium: Belgium exports more beer than home consumption

Belgian beer exports have been on the rise for a number of years now, but since last year Belgium is exporting more than is consumed in the country itself, Flanders News reported June 14.

In 2006 Belgian beer exports rose by 15%, while the amount of beer consumed in Belgium itself fell to under 90 litres per Belgian for the first time ever. (Belga) 55% of Belgian beer production is now sent abroad.

The success of this Belgian product also means that more beer is being produced.

Last year Belgian beer production rose by 6%, while beer consumption at home fell once again.

The figures come from the Belgian Brewers' Federation and were published in Thursday's edition of the daily De Morgen.

Falling beer consumption at home is being linked to stricter drinking laws and the rising popularity of other beverages.

As a result of the trend more and more Belgian brewers are concentrating on foreign markets.

However, Philippe Moortgat, one of the country's major brewers, told De Morgen that falling sales at home are not good publicity for the sector abroad. (Belga) More exports mean greater investments
Many small Belgian brewers like Affligem and Lindemans already send between half and three-quarters of their beer production abroad.

France: French brewers suspicious about the increase of barley price

After two years of steady consumption on the local beer market, French brewers became concerned about the increasing barley prices estimated to grow 50% in next months, AFP reported June 14.

“The tensions over barley prices will make them grow”, Gerard Laloi, President of French brewers said at a conference. Due to a sunny summer, the French market has remained quasi-stable in 2006, for a second year in a row, at 20.2 mil hl, after a continuous decrease of 25% in 25 years. The beer consumption in France constitutes 33 liters per capita, one of the weaker in Europe.

France is the 8th beer producer in Europe, with more than 16 mil hl, including 1.6 mil hl exported. With around 100.000 employees, the beer branch yields a global turnover of 12.6 billion euros. French Brewers Association unites 64 brewers and represents 99% of the market.

UK: New winter and spring barley varieties added to approved malting

Winter barley variety, Cassata, and spring variety, Quench, have been granted provisional approvals for malting by the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD), FWi reported June 14.

They were joined as new additions to the IBD approved list by Publican, which was provisionally approved for distilling use, and Tartan, which was provisionally approved for grain distilling.

Nickerson’s Cassata joins Pearl and Flagon as winter malting varieties. It produces malt of a similar quality to Pearl, but also has barley yellow mosaic virus resistance. Yield is 3% higher than Pearl, and similar to Flagon.

Syngenta Seeds’ Quench provides malt of good all-round quality for brewing use, according to the Maltsters’ Association of Great Britain. Its yield is 3% above NFC Tipple and 5% above Cocktail, which both have full approval for malting use. At 108% of the controls it has the highest treated yield on the current HGCA Recommended List.

Stable mate Publican, approved for distilling use, has the second highest yield on the RL at 107% of the control varieties.

“For maximum income, high yield combined with end user demand is a key factor,” Simon Phillips, European malting barley product development manager for Syngenta Seeds, said. “Publican and Quench already deliver top yields. Now, ...

Australia: Malting barley growers warned about storing their grain in ''sausage'' bags

Barley Australia Chairman David Thomas said that until research work on the effect sausage bags had on the germination of malting barley was completed, growers should be cautious about using the storage option, Nationwide News Pty Limited reported June 13.

''The barley industry is always concerned about any factor that may damage germination and, as such, Barley Australia urges growers to be cautious about storing malting barley in sausage bags,'' Mr Thomas said.

''At least two member parties of Barley Australia have indicated they will not purchase malting barley that has been stored in sausage bags,'' he said.

Barley Australia was set up in early 2005 as the peak barley body overseeing industry consultation, promotion and variety classification.

Members include ABB Grain Ltd, CBH Group, GrainCorp and four maltsters.

Mr Thomas said one maltster already had an incident where malting barley stored in a sausage bag failed to germinate properly.

''Malting barley is more finicky than most grains,'' he said.

''Keeping malting barley alive and respiring is vital for the malting process.

''The process of making malt is dependent on a live barley grain capable of vigorous germination.

''Only a live barley grain will trigger the cascade of biochemical reactions required to convert barley into malt suitable for ...
