0 UK: British Beer and Pub Association dismisses new drinking rules

The UK’s largest pub association has dismissed new restrictions on the marketing of ‘down-in-one’ alcoholic drinks as toothless, CatererSearch reported June 21.

The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) said new rules put in place by the drinks regulatory body the Portman Group would have little effect on the way pubs and bars sell alcoholic drinks.

Although the Portman Group has called on "shooter" or "slammer" style drinks to be abolished its jurisdiction only covers how drinks companies package and market their products and not how pubs and bars sell them.

A spokesman for the BBPA said: “The issue of irresponsible drinking is something we are taking responsibility for but the key issue is how products are actually sold by manufacturers not by the pubs themselves. We, and our members, are already committed to selling alcohol responsibly.”

Under the new marketing rules published this week by the Portman Group all pre-packaged drinks designed to be downed in one, or that urge people to drink rapidly, will be restricted.

David Poley, chief executive of the Portman Group, said: “Downing drinks is potentially damaging because it can cause people quickly to get drunk.”

0 Belgium: Belgian drinks 89 litres of beer per year

The average Belgian drinks 89 litres of beer each year, making it far and away the country's favourite alcoholic drink, Expatica News reported June 19.

Beer consumption in Belgium was down 1.1 percent last year, a decline which brewers attribute to fewer visits to bars and new consumption habits. 55 percent of Belgian beer production was exported.

The export of Belgian beer rose last year by 15 percent, according to figures presented by the federation of Belgian Brewers last week.

Production last year rose by 6 percent due to the increase in exports. Belgian brewers produced more than 18 million hectolitres of beer in 2006.

0 Canada: Survey shows farmers unwilling to put the CWB at risk

Western Canadian farmers are not prepared to put the CWB at risk in order to have the government completely open up the barley market, according to results of the CWB’s annual producer survey, presented at the Western Canada Farm Progress Show, June 21.

“Ensuring that the CWB remains strong is clearly important to Prairie producers,” CWB board chair Ken Ritter said of the survey, conducted in April 2007 among 1,300 farmers. “The CWB is the institution that most farmers identify with and it is clear from their responses that they do not want to lose it.”

Almost 60 per cent of farmers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba agreed with the statement “I am against anything that would weaken the CWB”. Sixty-six per cent of producers said that the views of the CWB are close to their own – significantly higher than any other farm group, grain company or government. Sixty per cent said the government must ensure the CWB remains strong and viable if it moved to open up the barley market.

The federal government has announced an open market for barley will begin on August 1. However, the CWB producer survey showed that over half of farmers believe the wording of the ...

0 Australia: Barley growers to share $23 mil in pool payments

From June 27 growers who delivered malting barley to ABB’s 2005/2006 pools will receive a $35/tonne distribution, ABB announced in a press release, June 22. The payment brings to $213/t payments made to malting pools or $23/t more than the estimated gross return in December 2005.

ABB Grain also will close its 2005/2006 feed barley pools, with a final net payment of $4.09/tonne also being paid on June 27 to growers who supported the pools. The payment will bring total feed barley payments for the No.1 pool to $162.09/t.

Malting 3 grades also will be finalised along with feed as the majority of malting 3 received was unsuitable for malting and therefore was priced close to feed. However, final payments for malting 3 will bring gross returns to $171.82 or $9.73/t higher than the final feed return.

Included in these payments are adjusted bulk handling deductions of $2/t for feed, $3.15/t for malting 3 and $7/t for malting 1.

ABB’s executive manager group marketing, Gary Spiel, said final malting barley payments would be made to growers in September after the 2005/2006 malting pools were finalised in August: “Unlike previous years, they won’t be closed until then because we are still finalising sales ...
