Brewery News
Brazil: Heineken extends Brazilian beer distribution agreement with FEMSA

Dutch brewer Heineken NV said it had extended its commercial partnership in Brazil with Mexico's Femsa, the largest bottler and brewer in Latin America, for 10 years until 2017, Reuters reported June 26.

"The extension of this agreement aims at capitalizing on the potential of the premium segment of the Brazilian beer market, one of the largest in the world, as well as by Femsa's powerful distribution capabilities," said Heineken in a statement.

Heineken is the world's fourth largest brewer in terms of sales.

Financial details were not disclosed.

Bulgaria: Beer consumption up in June, July and August

Consumption of beer in Bulgaria is expected to increase significantly during the summer, in comparison to the levels for the winter months, representative of the Union of Brewers in Bulgaria (UBB) Vladimir Ivanov said, according to Sofia Echo article published on June 25th.

During January and February, people consume nearly four times less beer than during June, July and August, Ivanov told Focus news agency. The trend has been re-occurring each year, Ivanov said.

Bulgaria’s brewing industry was developing and sometimes demand exceeded supply, he said.

Previously UBB reported that since the beginning of the year, beer sales have increased 18.4 per cent in comparison to the figures for the previous year.

USA: SABMiller announces 10-year U.S. partnership agreement with Foster’s

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announced on June 25 that its U.S. subsidiary, Miller Brewing Company, plans to enter into a ten year licensed-brewing partnership with Foster’s Group Limited. Under the new arrangement, brewing of the Foster’s Lager and Special Bitter brands sold in the U.S. will transfer from Molson Coors of Canada to Miller’s breweries in Fort Worth, Texas, and Albany, Georgia in November 2007.

Forming part of Miller’s strategy to migrate its portfolio to higher margin segments, the move to U.S. production will reduce Foster’s freight costs, enabling the business to put additional investment behind the brand to drive long-term growth. It will continue to be distributed and marketed in the U.S. through Foster’s USA LLC, a joint venture between Miller and Foster’s Group Limited.

Miller and Foster’s Group have been sales and marketing partners in the U.S. since 1993. The joint venture included Molson until 2001, when the Canadian brewer reduced its role to production of the Foster’s beer sold in the U.S. In August 2006, SABMiller announced that it would acquire all of Foster’s assets in India for US$120 million, including the rights to the Foster’s brand in the territory.

Australia: Foster's Group to cease production at North Fremantle Brewery

Foster's Group Limited (Foster's) will cease beer production at its North Fremantle brewery by the end of September 2007, with production shifting to other Foster's sites, the company announced in a press release, June 27.

'Head office', marketing and support, and home for Foster's in WA, will remain at the North Fremantle site.

This decision is a result of an Australian production review to improve cost and capital efficiency, operational flexibility and health, safety and environmental performance.

Employees affected by this decision will be supported through the process with re-deployment and career transition assistance provided.

"While this has been a difficult decision to make, a combination of improved efficiency and flexibility has led us to shift production to other sites", said David Grant, Director Global Beer Production.

The North Fremantle brewery is housed in a 1930s art deco building overlooking Fremantle Beach, formerly home to the Ford Motor Company in WA. The site was transformed into the home of Matilda Bay brewery in 1989.

"The beers and the philosophy behind Matilda Bay will not change," said Mr Grant.

"Matilda Bay Chief Brewer, Brad Rogers will remain at the helm of Matilda Bay and continue the proud tradition of craft beer innovation and creativity."

South Africa: SABMiller is to raise stakes in China, India

Brewing giant SABMiller said on June 25th it would continue to look for possible takeover targets in Asia, especially China and India, Europe, Africa, AllAfrica and Business Day communicated. It would use its recent South American acquisition as a platform for further growth.

Nigel Fairbrass, head of media relations, said on June 25th China would be a volume growth driver for SABMiller. It also aimed to grow its market share in the country from 16% to 20%, within the next three to five years.

China Resources Snow Breweries, established in 1993, became a joint venture with SABMiller in 1994 when it bought a 49% stake in the company.

Fairbrass said the company was keen to expand its business in India, which was expected to show "surprising" volume growth. SABMiller had about 70% of the market share in Africa. Fairbrass said that while there was not much more room for acquisitive expansion in Europe, it was still keen on doing deals in the region.

In South America, the company was on track to meet its profitability targets in the premium segment of the market, said Fairbrass. South America was expected to be SABMiller's biggest profit growth area.

SABMiller, which has joint ventures in Australia and Vietnam, ...

India: Mallaya United Breweries jumps over 235 per cent net profit

Vijay Mallaya-promoted United Breweries Limited on June 25th said its net profit during the year ended March 31 jumped over 235 per cent to Rs 65.09 crore, compared to Rs 19.4 crore in the previous year, according to The Times of India. Earning per share increased from Rs 0.47 per share to Rs 2.62 during the fiscal.

The company also achieved the market capitalisation of 1.7 billion dollars during the same period.

Kingfisher, the flagship brand of the company continues to command a 35 per cent market share in total beer market in India, the company said in a release.

However, fourth quarter of 2006-07 fiscal proved to be a very demanding period for the company as it has to face a debilitating regulatory issue in Andhra Pradesh, which resulted in a loss of production and sales for six weeks at its Hyderabad brewery.

The Board of directors at its meeting held on Monday have recommended payment of additional dividend of 10 per cent making a total dividend payout of 25 per cent for the year end March 31.

The company has also paid a dividend of 3 per cent amounting to Rs. 8.45 crore (inclusive of distribution tax) to ...

Australia & Saudi Arabia: ABB wins AU$1b deal to supply barley to Saudi Arabia

Grains marketer ABB Grain Ltd has won a AU$1 billion contract over five years to supply barley to Saudi Arabia, AAP communicated on June 27th. ABB said it had entered into a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia's United Feed Company to supply feed barley.

An ABB spokesman said ABB would supply at least one million tonnes of barley a year, but United Feed had indicated that it would take as much as ABB could provide. "In the past, we have provided one million to two million tonnes a year, depending on how the seasons have gone," the spokesman said.

ABB already has links with United Feed Company, having supplied more than eight million tonnes of barley to the company since 1998.

The barley to be delivered to United under the latest deal will be bagged and branded with the ABB logo and supplied to Saudi Arabia's Bedouin community.

"This agreement provides a solid, long-term support base for Australian barley growers and their grain, which is highly regarded by customers in the Middle East," ABB chairman Perry Gunner said. "It is a significant coup for Australian barley growers and our company."

ABB said Saudi Arabia was the world's biggest buyer of feed barley, importing about ...
