Brewery News
Czech Republic: Czech beer output up at record 9.9 million hl in H1

Czech breweries put out a record 9.94 million hectolitres of beer in the first half of the year, a year-on-year growth of more than 4 percent, Czech Beer and Malt Association head Jan Vesely has told CTK, August 9.

Sales increased on both the Czech market and abroad. The growth was mainly thanks to warm weather, Vesely said, adding some brewers broke monthly records.

Rodinny pivovar Bernard put out more than 73,000 hectolitres of beer in the first half, up by 6.4 percent on the year.

"Compared with the same months in the previous years, we saw the best results in May, April and June," said Bernard spokesman Zdenek Mikulasek.

Budejovicky Budvar, the third largest Czech brewer, raised sales on the Czech market and abroad by around 11 percent to 611,507 hectolitres of beer in the first six months.

Weather continues to benefit beer sales, said Vesely, adding the third quarter affects full-year results the most.

Czech beer output will certainly reach the magic level of 20 million hectolitres this year given the first-half results, he said. Last year, output amounted to a record 19.8 million hectolitres.

Retailers also say this year's summer benefits beer sales. Peter Vrazba from retail chain Tesco Stores CR said beer sales ...

Denmark: Carlsberg CEO denies rumours about Scottish & Newcastle takeover

Carlsberg CEO Nils Smedegaard Andersen poured cold water on ongoing rumours that the Danish brewer is considering a bid for UK peer Scottish & Newcastle, but this doesn't mean a merger couldn't happen in the long term, analysts said, according to AFX News Limited, August 9.

Market talk has been rife over the past six months as to whether a takeover of Scottish & Newcastle is on the cards, with speculation focused on Carlsberg since the Danish brewer changed its shareholder charter to enable it to issue shares.

But Carlsberg's CEO was reported in local publication Berlingske Tidend as saying this is "wild speculation."

"We are interested in buying in growth markets (East Europe and Asia, including China)," he said in an interview with the newspaper. "If we are to buy up in West Europe, the return must be good."

In response, Sanford C Bernstein analyst Trevor Stirling told Thomson Financial News he is sceptical of a Carlsberg bid for Scottish & Newcastle, but that in the long term it is possible a deal could be done between the two, perhaps in the form of a merger of equals.

"I am sceptical of a bid, as taking maximum equity and maximum debt Carlsberg could just ...

India: SABMiller, APB battle over beer trademark

Brand Tiger is back in the dock, this time in a court battle involving beer giants SABMiller and Asia Pacific Breweries (APB), an arm of Heineken, The Economic Times published August 10. Informed sources said SABMiller is opposing APB’s move to bring in international beer Tiger to India on the premise that it already operates a local brand Bengal Tiger.

SABMiller acquired mild beer Bengal Tiger when it took over Mysore Breweries in June 2001, and now wants to protect the trademark in the wake of APB’s plans to bring in Tiger, which is a leading international beer present in 70 markets globally.

In fact, Tiger is the flagship of APB, which is the Singapore-based arm of Heineken, and arguably the most famous Asian beer brand.

Incidentally, Indian biscuit major Britannia has been embroiled in a Tiger trademark controversy with its foreign partner Groupe Danone, which has hogged the limelight for well over a year. This involved overseas registration of Tiger biscuits, which is Britannia’s biggest success story.

When contacted, SABMiller confirmed that there exists a legal dispute on the matter in the Delhi High Court but declined to comment any further stating ‘it is sub-judice’.

New York City-based International Beverage Holdings USA (IBHL USA) announced the U.S. availability of Chang Beer, Thailand's No. 1 selling beer, in a press release, August 10. Newly formed IBHL USA is the exclusive importer of Chang and is supporting the U.S. introduction of the super premium import with a powerful marketing campaign for on-premise and off-premise customers with a keen focus on the growing number of more than 5,000 U.S. restaurants that serve Thai and Asian Fusion cuisine.

Japan: Sapporo posts loss after closing Osaka factory

Sapporo Holdings Ltd., Japan's third-largest beer maker, posted its second straight quarterly loss after booking costs to close a factory in Osaka, Bloomberg reported August 10.

The net loss was 1.56 billion yen ($13.3 million) in the three months ended June 30, compared with a profit of 1.99 billion yen a year earlier. The figures were calculated by subtracting the first-quarter result from the first-half loss reported in a statement to the Tokyo Stock Exchange today.

Tokyo-based Sapporo is expanding overseas and promoting higher-margin premium brand beer as it competes against larger rivals Kirin Holdings Co. and Asahi Breweries Ltd. in a shrinking market. Shipments of beer and beer-like drinks in Japan fell to their lowest level in the half since records began in 1992 as the population declines and younger consumers switch to other beverages.

“Sapporo needs to focus on the growing market for premium beers and developing new categories of alcohol,'' said Shunichiro Manome, an analyst at Cosmo Securities Co. in Tokyo. “It shouldn't fight Kirin and Asahi on their turf.''

Shipments of Yebisu, its premium beer brand, rose 30 percent to 5 million cases in the six months ended June 30.

That growth contrasts with Sapporo's total alcohol ...

Philippines: San Miguel sustains robust pace in 1st half 2007

San Miguel Corp. 1st half net income rises 81% to P7.88 billion, according to company’s press release, August 9.

Consolidated sales revenue reached P112.7 billion, 9% above the same period last year. While beer domestic and food businesses improved operating income by 21% and 10%, respectively, consolidated operating income declined to P8.20 billion. This is due to the increased costs of National Foods’ operations – a direct result of the prolonged drought in Australia. Beer international gained in the second quarter but San Miguel’s packaging and liquor subsidiaries, although improving, are still behind last year.
Consolidated net financing charges fell 44% to P2.23 billion, aided by the continuing strength of the peso. Other income, representing gains on the sale of Del Monte shares and gains from discontinued operations, pushed consolidated net income to P7.88 billion.

San Miguel’s domestic beer operations recorded 3% higher volumes, courtesy of a robust second quarter delivering for the business, 6% higher revenue at P21.2 billion. Operating income grew by 21% to P5.7 billion on account of stronger volumes and contained fixed operating expenses.

Overseas, San Miguel Brewing Int’l, Ltd. (SMBIL) ended the first semester with encouraging results. The second quarter’s operating income significantly narrowed the 1st quarter’s ...

Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries records robust organic growth for Q3 2007

Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) announced its unaudited results for the third quarter ended 30 June 2007, in a press release, August 10.

Quarter-on-quarter, attributable net profit before exceptionals (APBE) grew organically by S$11.0 million to S$28.9 million or 60.9% over last year. After taking into account translation difference, gestation losses and non-recurring items*, APBE was up by S$1.2 million or nearly 4% to S$31.8 million.

Organically, group profit before interest and tax (PBIT) increased by S$10.7 million to S$58.8 million or 22.3% over last year. Due to translation difference, gestation losses and non-recurring items*, PBIT declined S$3.8 million or 5.9% to S$61.3 million.

Mr Koh Poh Tiong, Chief Executive Officer, APB said, "This dilution in earnings was not unexpected and partly due to the gestation losses from our recent investments and new start-up breweries. Nevertheless, we expect our earnings rates to improve when we consider the potential of these regional investments, as was the case with our first phase of regionalisation which began over a decade ago. Fundamentally, our business remains sound and we have continued to deliver stronger organic growth rates, driven mainly by our overseas operations. In fact, IndoChina has continued to generate strong sales with an outstanding ...

Malt News
EU: The quantity of export licences booked by EU maltsters is a good start into the new grain year

EU maltsters booked 154,000 tonnes of export licences during July 1 – 24, a good start into the new grain year. It can be expected that malt exports in 2007/08 will be better than the 1.75 million tonnes of last year, but they will hardly reach the 2.2 million tonnes of 2005/06, market analysts commented in a report on August 1. There is not enough malting capacity for the exports of former times.

Beer consumption is higher in a number of EU countries, viz. Poland, Spain, even in France and Germany in a modest way. Bulgaria and Romania, former “third country” customers, are now members of the Union and appear in the statistics of intra-trade. Scottish distillers need about 100,000 tonnes of malt more than in 2005/06.

EU: By 2009 new malt capacities of 400,000 tonnes should become operational but at the same time old factories of 150,000 tonnes are to be closed

Not only beer sales improve in the EU, but also whisky distillers expand their production on basis of additional demand from the “newcomers” in the world economy. Bulgaria and Romania, the new EU members, have a deficit of malt and reduce the EU surplus further.

For 2007/08 market analysts expect a malt production of 8.6 million tonnes, leaving an export surplus of 1.65 million tonnes, less again than in 2006/07. By 2009 new capacities of 400,000 tonnes should become operational, but old factories of 150,000 tonnes are to be closed at the same time. Time being it looks like a continuation of tight malt supplies in the EU – and in the world.

Barley News
Australia: Australia is to be re-established as the top exporter in the world

Light rainfalls have continued all over the country in July, good enough for the winter, but more precipitation is needed latest by spring.

The crop forecast is unchanged 9.0 million tonnes, which will re-establish Australia as the top exporter in the world, according to the analysts’ estimations.

ABB Grain was reported to have concluded an LTA for min. 1 million tonnes of feed barley annually with United Feed of Saudi Arabia.

EU: Southeast Europe reports very poor barley crop results

Southeast Europe reports very poor results, according to the latest reports. Quantities and quality of Austrian spring barley are far below normal results, protein contents up to 14 % are typical for this crop.

In the Czech Republic the acreage of spring barley had declined from 425,000 ha to 370,000 ha, a crop of 1.2 after 1.65 million tonnes of spring barley last year is forecast. Yields and screenings are bad, proteins even higher than in Austria.

In a first official forecast the Slovak government had expected a spring barley crop of 700,000 tonnes, which will not be achieved. The same quality problems exist as in Austria and Czech. Hungary reports a reasonably good crop of winter barley, but a poor spring barley crop like its neighbours.

Official barley crop figures of Romania are 320,000 tonnes vs. 750,000 tonnes a year ago, and of Bulgaria 370,000 tonnes vs. 550,000 tonnes.
