Brewery News
Czech Republic: Anheuser-Busch the most likely bidder for Budejovicky Budvar

Anheuser-Busch is the most likely buyer for state-owned Czech brewer, Budejovicky Budvar, if the latter is privatised, according to two sector bankers, The Financial Times reported September 6.

Heineken of the Netherlands is also likely to make an offer for Budejovicky Budvar, both bankers said, but would probably not accept the same high multiples as A-B would on a deal.

Assuming the company has approximately EUR 120m in revenues and a net income of 8-10%, the first banker estimated Budvar’s price would be in the area of EUR 400m. The second banker estimated that the brewer would sell for 10-15 times EBITDA.

Trademark issues surrounding the Budweiser name, the first banker said, constitute grounds for A-B to pay a premium for the Èeské Budìjovice-based company. A-B, he said, would resolve the issue and save the company some USD 25m in legal costs per year: “more than the net income of [Budejovicky Budvar].”

Budvar could be an attractive target for Heineken too, the first banker said, as the Dutch brewer seeks to expand its presence in Eastern Europe. “For them, it would move the needle, they are small in the Czech Republic [and such a purchase] would get them closer to ...

Uzbekistan: Baltic Beverages Holding AB (BBH) announces inauguration of brewery in Uzbekistan

BBH has announced the official inauguration of its new brewery in Uzbekistan, according to S&N press release, September 6. The new brewery, Sarbast Plus, is a joint venture with a local partner where BBH controls 75.1%.

The new business, Sarbast Plus, is a joint venture with a local partner, where BBH controls 75.1%. The two partners have invested approximately 50 million EURO into building the greenfield brewery in Tashkent, as well as in training and development of marketing and distribution systems.

The brewery started shipments of its first local brand, Sarbast, in July 2007. The initial planned capacity of the plant is one million hectolitres per annum, with the potential to double the capacity by the end of 2008.

All production processes are fully automatic, the quality control system has been designed and installed by a specialist team from BBH, combining the expertise of Carlsberg and Scottish & Newcastle. The equipment was provided by leading manufacturers.

The new operation directly creates 300 new jobs, while supporting new jobs in auxiliary companies.

With a population of approximately 27 million, a stable economy and growing level of beer consumption (ca 10 litres per capita), BBH believes the Uzbekistan market has the potential to grow strongly in the ...

UK: Carlsberg ready to buy S&N’s stake in BBH; S&N says it’s not for sale

Carlsberg AS is ready to buy Scottish & Newcastle out of their Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH) joint venture for 30-40 bln dkr, daily Berlingske Tidende said, citing Carlsberg chairman Povl Krogsgaard-Larsen, according to AFX News Limited, September 7.

'We are ready,' Krogsgaard-Larsen said. 'We can clearly see advantages in getting 100 pct ownership of BBH. We've built up a capital reserve so we can react the day it becomes possible [to buy S&N's share of BBH].'

'Naturally there is competition between Scottish & Newcastle and Carlsberg about marketing our own brands as effectively as possible,' Krogsgaard-Larsen said. 'If we have 100 pct of BBH we can decide for ourselves how we will market our products alongside Baltika's products.'

Sources told Thomson Financial News they could not 'conceive of the possibility' of the stake in the joint venture with Carlsberg becoming available.

A spokesman for S&N responded: 'We are very happy with the relationship with Carlsberg and the joint ownership of BBH and that is and will remain the position.'

Speculation of a merger or a takeover of S&N by Carlsberg resurfaced again this week after Carlsberg announced the appointment of Joergen Buhl Rasmussen as chief executive following the departure of Nils Smedegaard Andersen who steps ...

Peru: Ajegroup launches its first beer and hopes to steal market share from SABMiller and InBev

Peruvian beverages company Ajegroup, which sells soft drinks in Latin America and Asia, launched its first beer this week and hopes to steal market share from SABMiller and InBev, Reuters reported September 4.

Aje, which is closely held by the Ananos family, will sell its "Franca" beer on its home turf in Peru's capital Lima and plans to soon have up to 15 percent of the Andean country's beer market.

Franca is being introduced as Peru's beer market is experiencing intense price wars -- where InBev has aggressively marketed its Brazilian brand Brahma since 2005 to pressure dominant brands of SABMiller's Backus y Johnston unit, such as Cusquenya. Backus dominates Peru's beer market and had 2006 sales of 1.569 billion soles ($497 million).

Aje, which has operations in 10 Latin American countries, has often gained footholds in new markets by selling its Big Cola brand in bigger bottles and at lower prices than competing brands of Coca-Cola and PepsiCo.

"We aren't the cheapest," said Alfredo Paredes, Aje's head of corporate affairs. "We normally sell in the middle of the price range of each category."

In Lima on Monday, a 600 ml bottle of a Backus y Johnston brew was selling for about 3.16 soles, Franca ...

Kazakhstan: Cooperation between Grolsch and EFES in Kazakhstan

Royal Grolsch N.V. of the Netherlands has signed a long-term licencing agreement with Efes Karaganda Brewery, the Kazakhstan beer operation of Efes Beer Group (EFES), which will represent the Grolsch specialty brand Amsterdam Navigator in Kazakhstan, PR Newswire reported September 5. Efes will brew Amsterdam Navigator under licence in Kazakhstan and will oversee all local marketing, sales and distribution. The Amsterdam brand has grown substantially in Kazakhstan during the past year. Previously Efes imported Amsterdam Navigator from Russia. The agreement was signed at the end of August.

Rob Snel, President of Grolsch International is very happy with the new agreement with Efes: "Kazakhstan is an important market for the Amsterdam brand and together we created an excellent basis for further growth. Our agreement brings many logistical benefits as all the activities will take place directly in Kazakhstan. We expect the first Amsterdam beer to be brewed in Kazakhstan at the end of September."

Osman Çaglayan, General Manager of Efes Karaganda Brewery said, "The Kazakh beer market has experienced rapid growth over the last five years. We are delighted to be able to lead the expansion of Amsterdam Navigator into Kazakhstan, which already proved this year that it will be an ...

USA: Anheuser-Busch executives optimistic about growth outlook

Management continues to expect accelerated sales and earnings growth in the second half of the year and earnings per share growth for the full year to exceed its 7 to 10 percent long-term objective, Anheuser-Busch executives told investors in a presentation given at the Lehman Brothers Consumer Conference, according to company’s press release, September 6.

“We are adapting our portfolio and entire system to meet the demands of a changing marketplace and we are making good progress at strengthening our company’s foundation for sustainable long-term growth,” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of the company.

U.S. beer industry volume in 2006 and year-to-date has grown at a healthy pace. Over this period, import and craft beers in particular have enjoyed strong growth and Anheuser-Busch has added considerably to its portfolio and presence in these growing segments through alliances, acquisitions and new product development. The company has also been leveraging its superior distribution system to pursue high-margin growth opportunities in non-alcohol beverages, such as energy drinks and super-premium waters.

While Anheuser-Busch’s U.S. beer sales-to-retailers were below expectations in the first half of the year, volume trends have shown improvement in the second half. So far in this quarter, ...

Malt News
World: The net global increases of malt capacities will be less than forecasted

The industry amended construction plans for new malting factories. Analysts commented that new factories usually go together with closures of old facilities, therefore the net increases will be less than the figures shown below: EU 315,000 tonnes net, Russia 300,000 tonnes, South America 140 tonnes, possibly 230,000 tonnes, Australia 180,000 tonnes, China (rough estimate) 1 Million tonnes. All this will not yet lead to an overcapacity, assuming that the good beer sales will continue.

UK: Maltsters ‘react responsibly’ to barley quality relaxing quality parameters

UK winter malting barley crop quality is average to good, say grain traders Gleadell, according to Farmers Guardian, September 7. Moisture and nitrogen levels are higher than last year and barley size is plumper, although hectolitre weights are disappointing, reflecting lower yields. Availability will be similar to last season.

According to sales director Stuart Shand, maltsters have “reacted responsibly”, relaxing quality parameters and waiving claims, so there is higher than normal acceptance rate, creating a bigger supply.

Spring barley quality is, against all odds given poor spring planting and growing conditions, overall much better than last year with lower moisture, lower nitrogen and a bolder sample.

“Unfortunately, the later bad weather has hit around 20 per cent of the East Anglia crop, causing germination problems. Growers here should be aware that we may be able to deal with some of these for food malt,” said Mr Shand. Scotland is currently on track for a good crop, he added.

"WORLD SITUATION
There is actually more malting barley available in the EU than there was last season, but the ever-firming feed price keeps pushing the malting price ever higher. We now need to watch the situation in both Canada and Australia. Any problems in either ...

Barley News
World: The global malting barley deficit may come up to 950,000 tonnes

Russia and Ukraine talk of an import deficit of 3 – 500,000 tonnes together. A hypothetical European balance shows a large deficit altogether:
-- EU 300 – 350,000 tonnes
-- Russia/Ukraine 300 – 500,000 tonnes
-- Balkans/Turkey/N.Africa 100,000 tonnes
TOTAL 700 – 950,000 tonnes

Imports from overseas would give a welcome relief, but crops in Australia and Argentina are not harvested yet, and in any case FOB prices and ocean freight will result in CIF levels well above US$ 400,- per ton.

World: Barley markets are very tight

Barley markets are very tight because of low carry–over stocks from the crop of 2006, poor 2007 crops in the EU, Russia, Ukraine, government actions and withholding of barley from markets, particularly by farmers.

The EU has a small crop, virtually no carry-over from last year, no intervention stocks. On basis of a production of 56.5 Million tonnes and a feed use of 37 million tonnes (3 Million tonnes less than last year) the EU can export about 3.0 – 3.5 Million tonnes to world markets. But it is quite possible that the feed use will shrink further, because Brazilian maize and sorghum, soymeal and manioc calculate better in feed mixes. Exports of around 5 Million tonnes are thinkable, and exporters booked already 1.02 Million tonnes of licences in the first two months of the grain year.

Russia: Russia considers limiting barley exports

Russia is considering imposing limits on barley exports because of the rise in grain prices on world markets, Grain Union President Arkady Zlochevsky told Interfax News Agency, September 4.

"It is possible to limit exports. The Agriculture Ministry has formed a special working group, which is holding the relevant consultations," he said.

No specific decisions have yet been made, he said.

"It would be inexpedient to limit exports during harvesting, and we shall see what happens when the harvest is over," he added.

The possibility of grain interventions, which are inevitably accompanied with an export duty, is also under consideration, he said.

"Export duties on certain types of grain, primarily barley, may be imposed before the interventions," Zlochevsky said.

Russia exported 150,000 tonnes of barley this July compared with 100,000 tonnes a year before.

Hops News
USA: More than 1 million lbs losses of hops because of storms

US weather conditions have also been generally conducive for a good crop. But also the US has suffered from strong rain and hail storms. In early July, a short but severe hail storm hit the Northern Idaho growing region resulting in estimated crop losses of approx. 50% on several 100 hectares, Joh. Barth & Sohn GmbH & Co. KG commented in its Hop Market Telegram of August 2007.

Prolonged rains in Oregon in the middle of August caused the collapse of more than 100 ha of hop trellis. The estimated losses from these storms are likely to exceed 1 million lbs (450 mt) of hops. The estimate of the US crop based the official USDA acreage survey and visual appearance is 27.850 mt compared to 26.166 mt in 2006 and 24.001 mt in 2005.
