Brewery News
Portugal: Unicer to close brewery

In line with its restructuring plan Unicer in Portugal will close its brewery in Loulé in Southern Portugal at latest by the end of this year, according to Carlsberg’s press release, October 3. The closure affects 65 employees.

Unicer is taking this process of restructure as a way to gain continued improvements in productivity which supports the reinforcement of its competitiveness and reassures its sustained growth.
Loule’s brewery has a capacity of 400.000 hl and it represents 7% of the total beer production of Unicer.

Unicer also has two other breweries in Santarém and Leça do Balio which have the capacity to ensure all future production needs. Unicer has a rapid growing export volume and transport costs from Leça do Balio and Santarém for overseas shipping and to the rest of Europe are much more cost-effective.

About Unicer:

Unicer is the biggest company within the brewing sector in Portugal, operating with beer, water, softdrinks, wine and coffee. The shareholding structure is settled by the Viacer Consortium, holding 56% and Carlsberg holding 44%. Employing around 2000 workers Unicer closed 2006 books with a revenue of € 440 m, representing a growth of 9% of 2005.

Carlsberg is one of the leading brewing groups in the world, with ...

Netherlands: Heineken, Grolsch and Bavaria sued over price-fixing

An industry group representing Dutch bars, Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN), sued Heineken NV and two other brewers, seeking damages for alleged price fixing that the EU says kept beer prices artificially high for years, Associated Press reported October 1.

Spokesman Anthony van der Klis of the Horeca association -- which also represents hotels, restaurants and caterers -- declined to say whether it would seek more or less than the 219 million euros ($310 million) that Heineken was forced to pay the EU in April. Heineken denies price-fixing and is appealing the fine.

The suit also names Grolsch NV and Bavaria NV, which were fined smaller amounts by the EU and are also appealing.

"We tried to reach a settlement before moving to a lawsuit, but (the brewers) didn't want to talk seriously to us," Van der Klis said.

A fourth brewer, InBev SA, was exempted from EU fines because it blew the whistle on several European beer cartels after regulators caught it fixing prices in Belgium. Klis said the Dutch association was in talks with InBev over a settlement.

Heineken spokeswoman Vivi Hollert said it was company policy not to comment. The suit had been widely expected: EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes directly invited ...

Poland: Beer sales up 12% between January and August 2007

Between January and August 2007 sales of beer in Poland improved by as much as 12% year on year, with a volume of 25.39 million hl, according to the Association of Beer Industry Employers (ZPPP), Polishmarket reported October 1.

This is an impressive result, and nothing comparable has been seen for the last 10 years, according to Marcin Pirog, the new head of ZPPP and president of Carlsberg. He added that the boost in sales was prompted by brewers’ investments in production capacities, infrastructure and beer quality, along with improved sales in the HoReCa arena and changes in consumer preferences.

Mr Pirog said that for the last two or three years breweries have observed a trend toward drinking beers with lower alcohol content, and this contributes to higher volume sales. Furthermore, consumption by tourists in large cities also contributes to overall sales.

However, despite the improvement in sales, the industry faces an increase in the prices of raw materials: since the beginning of 2007 the price of malt has risen by 40%, and that of hops by 100%. There are also problems with supplies of aluminium for the production of cans. This is why the price of beer may increase, ...

Singapore: Banks sue Asia Pacific Breweries for gambling loss

Four foreign banks operating in Singapore began a lawsuit against Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) demanding the Tiger beer maker compensate them for losses arising from bogus loans to an ex-APB executive, according to Reuters, October 1.

The local units of Sumitomo Mitsui, Mizuho, Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) and Unicredit claim Chia Teck Leng, former finance manager of APB's Singapore unit, was able to cheat them by virtue of his senior position and APB's weak internal controls.

APB, a joint venture between Singapore conglomerate Fraser & Neave and Dutch brewer Heineken, said in a statement it believed it had a "good defence" and has instructed its lawyers to "vigorously defend the claims".

The brewer has not made any provisions in its financial accounts, a spokeswoman said in an email to Reuters.

The High Court hearing is scheduled to run for two months.

Chia was jailed for 42 years in April 2004 for using forged documents to cheat the banks of S$117 million (US$78.5 million) over nearly five years to feed a gambling addiction. About S$35 million of the funds have been recovered, according to local media, in what is Singapore's biggest commercial fraud case.

In their opening statement, SEB's lawyers said ...

Czech Republic: The Czech government is not going to privatise the Budejovicky Budvar brewery right now

The Czech government is not going to privatise the Budejovicky Budvar brewery right now, Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek said in the Chamber of Deputies, according to ČTK, October 1.

"This is no privatisation," he said, adding a transformation of the brewery into a joint-stock company would take about 12-18 months.

Budvar, the third largest Czech brewery, raised output by 5 percent to 1.151 million hectolitres in 2006. It sells beer to 50 countries of the world.

Topolanek said a tender for the adviser for Budvar transformation would take place in October.

He also dismissed speculations that his adviser Marek Dalik is in talks with US brewing giant Anheuser-Busch on the privatisation. Budvar and Anheuser-Busch lead a number of trademark lawsuits.

South Africa: Global Credit Rating upgrades SABMiller to AA and A1+

International credit ratings agency Global Credit Rating (GCR) has upgraded global brewing giant SABMiller's (SAB) long term and short term domestic ZAR currency ratings to AA and A1+ respectively, Fin24 reported October 3.

The ratings reflect SAB's continued strong growth in earnings over the past five years and robust cash generation, GCR said in a statement on Wednesday. The ratings upgrade reflected SAB's record of continued strong earnings growth since listing on the London Stock Exchange. Between 2003 and 2007, SAB increased revenues by 130% to US$18.6bn, while attributable earnings grew five fold to $1.6bn, it added.

GCR corporate analyst Eyal Shevel said SAB's successful focus on emerging markets, utilising the unique expertise the group has developed over many years of business in Africa, had proved profitable for the group and had prompted the rating upgrade. Whereas the brewing industry in developed countries has reached saturation point, the global industry performance has been driven by developing markets, where beer volume growth has averaged between 5% and 6%.

In the recent past, SAB benefited from the robust expansion of Eastern European market. However, focus going forward would be on growing Chinese and ...

Barley News
USA: Barley harvest declines 5% from August forecast

Barley production in the United States is estimated at 212 million bushels, down 5% from the August forecast but up 18% from last year, according to the USDA's annual small grains production summary, AgReport posted on September 28th.

Average yield per acre, at 60.4 bushels, is down 2.7 bushels from the previous forecast and 0.7 bushel below 2006. The area harvested for grain is estimated at 3.51 million acres, down 1% from August but 19% above a year ago.

Harvested acreage is up in the top four barley-producing States from the previous season. Acreage harvested is up 40,000 in Idaho, 100,000 in Montana, 395,000 in North Dakota, and 35,000 in Washington resulting in higher production than last year. Production is down throughout the Great Basin, Ohio Valley, and Mid-Atlantic States.

Barley stocks in all positions on September 1, 2007 totaled 189 million bushels, down 11% from September 1, 2006, according to the USDA's latest stocks in all positions estimates.

On-farm stocks are estimated at 106 million bushels, 6% below a year ago. Off-farm stocks, at 83.1 million bushels, are 17% below September 2006. The June - August 2007 indicated disappearance is 92.0 million bushels, 22% above the same period a year earlier.

Canada: Initial payments for 2007-08 crop year increased

The CWB announced that 2007-08 initial payments for feed and designated barley will increase effective Oct. 4, 2007, in a press release, October 2. The CWB also announced that it submitted new recommendations for a further increase to the initial payments given the dramatic increase in market prices since August 15, when the last adjustment recommendation was submitted to the federal government.

The Oct. 4 increase for feed barley in Pool A will be CA$23.50 per tonne, while the increase for designated barley will range from CA$29.50 to CA$36.50.

The barley initials were set directly by government without a CWB recommendation. Dramatic market price increases between May and August meant initial payments reflected a lower proportion of farmers’ expected final return. Since Aug. 2, there have been further market increases.

The adjustment payments, in dollars per tonne, for representative grades in each pool account are listed below. The total initial payment to date is basis in-store Vancouver or St. Lawrence and must be adjusted for freight/elevation charges to arrive at farm gate prices.

No. 1 CW Barley (Pool A)

Initial payment - CA$107.00
Adjustment payment - CA$23.50
Total payment to date - CA$130.50
2007-08 PRO - CA$254

Hops News
World: Serious hops supply problems and definite price increase ahead

Yields from the 2007 crop will struggle to satisfy demand. That’s the consensus of opinion from hop dealers worldwide and the worrying thing is it doesn’t look as if it’s going to be any better next year, Charles Faram & Co Ltd. posted in their last newsletter.

The low prices over the last 7-8 years have encouraged many hop growers give up and grub their hops. For example in the US, since 1997, harvested hop acreage fell from about 8,300 acres to nearly 5,200 this year, and overall production dropped from 13.5 million pounds to an estimated 8.9 million pounds. The lower acreage coupled with freak weather in many hop growing areas means that this years crop will struggle to satisfy demand.

America saw some of the worst weather conditions for the time of year (June) for over 50 years. Winds gusting in excess of 60 mph, marble size hail stones and lightning hit hop fields in Bonners Farm, Boundary County, Idaho affecting over 450 acres of aroma hops. News from the US harvest is that yields are coming off quite well and alphas are well within the normal range.

In the UK severe flooding (late June and early July) ...

Replicative ageing and senescence in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the impact on brewing fermentations

Authors
Christopher D. Powell, Sylvie M. Van Zandycke, David E. Quain and Katherine A. Smart

Overview
Ageing is the predetermined progressive transition of an individual cell from youth to old age that ®nally culminates in death. Yeast replicative ageing is a function of the number of divisions undertaken by an individual cell, and may be measured by enumerating the number of bud scars on the cell surface. An aged yeast cell exhibits a distinct morphology and physiology from that of younger cells : the impact of such modi®- cations in cellular function on fermentation performance is examined here. Although the precise mechanism of ageing has not been fully elucidated, the current theories are reviewed and discussed.
