Brewery News
Canada: Labatt Breweries to spend $45 million on production upgrade at Halifax plant

Labatt Breweries is pouring $45 million into an upgrade of packaging and production lines at its Oland Brewery operation in Halifax, The Canadian Press reported October 4.

The capital investment means an increase in annual production volume to 1.3 million hectoliters, or more than 380 million bottles. The money comes from Labatt's global parent company, InBev.

The brewery and the province of Nova Scotia have struck a marketing alliance that both say works to promote their brands through the Alexander Keith's label.

In all markets across the country Alexander Keith's beers carry the symbolic words of "Imported from Nova Scotia" and the recognizable Nova Scotia flag.

Romania: 700 million litres of beer consumed over summer months

The high temperatures, the tens of millions of euros spent on promotion, as well as over 125 available brands have brought beer consumption over the summer period to 700 million litres, with registered sales worth 500 million euros, Ziarul Financiar published October 5.

Over the three summer months, beer sales almost equalled the level registered for the first five months of the year. "The summer months account for 36-38% of our annual beer sales, however this year saw a big sales boom in the first quarter, when sales of multinational companies increased 37%," says Constantin Bratu, general manager of the Romanian Brewers Association, which includes Heineken Romania, Ursus Breweries, InBev Romania and United Romania Breweries Bereprod (URBB), the bottler of Tuborg and Carlsberg.

In the summer of 2005, beer consumption amounted to 5.5 million hectolitres, however, in June-August this year, the market surpassed the 7 million-hectolitre mark, an over 27% rise, according to data from the Romanian Brewers Association.

"Sales of the four multinational companies on the beer market (members of the Romanian Brewers Association) increased 17% between June and August this year, to 5.5 million hectolitres," says Bratu.

In 2005, the leading beer producers sold 3.8 million hectolitres of beer, with ...

Australia: Foster's workers walk off the job

Hundreds of workers at the Foster's brewery in Queensland have walked off the job in a protest over the company's efforts to introduce a non-union collective agreement, AAP reported October 5.

Members of the Electrical Trades Union (ETU), the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union stopped work at the Yatala Brewery, south of Brisbane, at 11am (AEST).

A union spokeswoman said the workers would rally in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley today and would return to work at 3pm (AEST).

Another strike is scheduled for next Wednesday if no agreement has been reached.

ETU organiser Scott Wilson accused the company of using federal industrial relations laws to override what employees wanted.

"The employees at Yatala brewery have clearly indicated their desire for a union collective agreement but the company continues to ignore their wishes," he said.

Foster's has indicated the strike will not affect production.

Bulgaria: Carlsberg Bulgaria narrows gap to second-ranked brewer

Carlsberg Bulgaria, the Bulgarian arm of one of the world's largest brewers, reported sales growth of 26.5 per cent year-on-year in January-September 2007, officials from the Bulgarian office of the company reported, according to Sofia Echo, October 5.

Despite that the result represents a slight retreat from the 30 per cent growth level achieved last year, the company has narrowed its lag behind the first- and second-ranked players on the market, Heineken and InBev. Thus, Carlsberg is now in control of 25 per cent of the market, whereas Heineken and InBev hold with 30 and 26 per cent, respectively.

The sales pick-up is largely attributable to soaring sales of Shoumensko pivo, up 24 per cent on the year. This is logical because in the past six months the company complemented the Shoumensko pivo brand portfolio with four new products. Shoumensko is now available in 1 l and 1.5 l bottles, in a 500 ml can and a retro-bottle in honour of Shoumensko's 125th anniversary.

The company will continue with investments into technological upgrades. In the next three years it plans to invest 20 million leva in its Shoumen-based brewery.

France: Heineken to appeal ban on adverts

Heineken, one of the six official sponsors of the Rugby World Cup in France, are to appeal against a ruling forcing them to pull associated advertising from local magazines and newspapers, The Financial Times Limited reported October 4.

A Paris court ruled on Tuesday that four publicity visuals used by Heineken are illegal under France's 1991 Evin Law, which controls advertising of alcoholic drinks.

The case against Heineken, taken by the National Association for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Addiction (ANPAA), is the second in which the brewer has been charged with breaking French laws governing alcohol advertising.

Heineken said in a statement they would appeal the latest ruling on the grounds they had done their best to respect local laws.

Asked if they felt "persecuted" in France, Heineken said no.

"Heineken's relationship with RWC 2007 is to make the tournament an enjoyable, unique and memorable experience for rugby and its fans across the world," said Vivi Hollertt, a Heineken spokesperson.

Hollertt said the company's promotional activities, in about 15 markets, were adapted to fit local laws; for example, they offered alcohol-free beer in France.

However, the company may yet again have to defend themselves against one of the ANPAA's original charges - one that was not ...

Singapore & India: Asia Pacific Breweries bets on strong India growth

Singapore's Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd will tap rising incomes and younger populations in China, India and Vietnam to drive growth over the next decade, a senior company official said, according to Reuters, October 4.

India's per capita consumption of beer is just 1 litre, lagging other Asian markets such as Thailand and Singapore, but rising incomes and easing regulations are helping the market grow quickly, said Vivek Chhabra, director for South Asia at APB.

"The real attraction is the growth opportunity, as it's one of the fastest-growing beer markets in the world," he said at the launch of APB's first brand in India, Baron's Strong Brew.

"As the market matures, there will be a shift to more premium beers," he said. Premium beers made up less than 1 percent of the Indian market, compared to about 15 percent in Vietnam, he said.

Strong beer makes up about two-thirds of the Indian market, estimated at nearly 11 million hectolitres in the year to March 2007, up 27 percent from a year earlier, Chhabra said.

Strong beer is forecast to grow at about 18 percent annually over the next five years, with the total beer market expected to more ...

Malt News
USA: Cargill to reopen Sheboygan malting plant

Cargill Inc. announced that it will reopen the malting facility in Sheboygan on December 1, 2007. The facility will focus on producing limited quantities of specialty malt products for the craft brewing industry, Journal Sentinel published October 3.

"That's great news," said Russell Klisch, president of Lakefront Brewery Inc., a craft brewer based in Milwaukee.

Klisch said the prices of malt and hops - both key ingredients in beer - are increasing. He said growing demand for both products, along with restricted supplies caused by droughts and other factors, are driving those price increases.

The addition of a new malting facility in Wisconsin will help reduce shipping costs for the state's brewers, Klisch said. Some brewers import their malted grains, he said.

"If they're good-quality malts," Klisch said, "I won't have to ship them all the way from Belgium."

Overall U.S. beer sales volume increased just 2% in 2006, according to Beer Marketer's Insights, a trade publication.

But the sales volume for craft and specialty beers, a category that includes Wisconsin brewers such as New Glarus Brewing Co. and Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co., increased 11%, according to the Brewers Association, a trade group for craft brewers. That segment is on pace for another 11% increase in ...

Barley News
Australia: Barley producer slashes profit as drought hurts

ABB Grain's full-year profit is as much as 74 per cent lower than earlier estimates because of the drought, Bloomberg reported September 5.

Profit for the year ended September 30 was $5 million to $8 million, down from a February estimate of $16 million to $19 million, Adelaide-based ABB Grain said yesterday. That compared with $66.7 million a year earlier.

Drought has slashed barley production in Australia and the forecast for barley, wheat and canola crops was cut by 31 per cent last month. Price volatility in grain markets also affected profit, ABB said.

"Global influences, including government decisions on grain stocks and pricing, and uncertainty with current crop conditions in Australia are causing extreme volatility on Australian and world grain markets," ABB Grain managing director Michael Iwaniw said.

ABB shares fell 53˘, or 7 per cent, to $7.10.

Drought hurt ABB's pastoral and rural services while its malting and supply chain units performed "exceptionally well in difficult conditions", Mr Iwaniw said.

Barley output in the harvest starting this month might be 5.9 million tonnes, down from a June forecast of 9 million, because of drought, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics said on September 18. Barley's price is up 44 per cent this ...

Canada: Barley crop better than last year but lower than estimations

Canada's farmers are expected to produce slightly more crops than forecast this year, thanks to increases in some harvested areas of the country, Statistics Canada said yesterday, The Vancouver Province reported October 5. However, overall production in September was still below the level of a year earlier.

Barley production is forecast at 11.82 million tonnes, down from 11.85 million tons estimated in July but up from 9.57 million tons a year earlier.

The estimates are based on the annual September survey of 17,000 farmers.

Ukraine: Barley trade more active on high prices

Trade in barley was more active last week, as the price set by exporters and processors is high, Agro Perspectiva reported October 3.

Agricultural producers still tend to keep grain hoping for higher prices. After all, grain cost constantly grows. Farmers forced to improve their finances and free some funds, were the only who sold grain of the new harvest.

EXPORT

Feed barley exporters purchase prices were UAH1050–1,200 per MT, CPT port.
Feed barley US$ prices ranged within US$247–257 per MT (FOB)/US$237–247 per MT (CPT port).

Scientific Digest
Replicative ageing and senescence in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the impact on brewing fermentations

Authors
Christopher D. Powell, Sylvie M. Van Zandycke, David E. Quain and Katherine A. Smart

Overview
Ageing is the predetermined progressive transition of an individual cell from youth to old age that ®nally culminates in death. Yeast replicative ageing is a function of the number of divisions undertaken by an individual cell, and may be measured by enumerating the number of bud scars on the cell surface. An aged yeast cell exhibits a distinct morphology and physiology from that of younger cells : the impact of such modi®- cations in cellular function on fermentation performance is examined here. Although the precise mechanism of ageing has not been fully elucidated, the current theories are reviewed and discussed.
