UK & USA: SABMiller and Molson Coors to combine U.S. operations in joint venture

SABMiller plc and Molson Coors Brewing Company announced that they have signed a letter of intent to combine the U.S. and Puerto Rico operations of their respective subsidiaries, Miller and Coors, in a joint venture to create a stronger, brand-led U.S. brewer with the scale, resources and distribution platform to compete more effectively in the increasingly competitive U.S. marketplace, according to SABMiller’s press release, October 9.

The new company, which will be called MillerCoors, will have annual pro forma combined beer sales of 69 million U.S. barrels (81 million hectoliters) and net revenues of approximately $6.6 billion. Pro forma combined EBITDA will be approximately $842 million1. SABMiller and Molson Coors expect the transaction to generate approximately $500 million in annual cost synergies to be delivered in full by the third full financial year of combined operations. The transaction is expected to be earnings accretive to both companies in the second full financial year of combined operations. Closing of the transaction is subject to reaching final agreement, obtaining clearance from U.S. competition authorities, certain other regulatory clearances and third-party consents, as required.

Germany: Oktoberfest beer sales hit all-time record

Sales of beer at Oktoberfest, the annual beer festival in the German city of Munich, hit an all-time record despite a fall in visitor attendance, fest officials said, according to AAP, October 8.

Waiters and waitresses in Bavarian national dress served 6.7 million one-liter steins of beer, said Gabriele Weishaeupl, chief executive of the event, on the fest's last day.

The visitors also gobbled up 104 roasted bullocks. That was also a record: last year 102 cattle were enough to feed the crowds eager for beef.

Held in the heart of Munich, Oktoberfest drew to an end Sunday in bright sunshine with the crowds still queuing in hopes of a rare seat in the beer tents or a ride in the fun fair section.

Visitor numbers at the event, including children on the rides, elderly folk quietly enjoying the beer gardens and young revelers drinking to the oompah music, slipped 300,000 to 6.2 million people.

Many visitors from around the world donned Bavarian clothes, including men's leather shorts held up by braces over the shoulders, during their sessions in the gaily painted beer tents.

Women wore the local "dirndl" frocks, which include a bodice with a deep neckline and a white apron. Weishaeupl praised the dressing ...

Belarus: Alivariya Brewery boosts output 26.1% in nine months of 2007

Belarus’ prominent brewery Alivariya has increased beer output by 26.1% on the year in January-September 2007 to 0.34 million hectolitres, the company said in a release, according to Agrobel, October 8.

Alivariya expects production capacities to increase 40% in 2008 to 0.7 million hectolitres.

In September, Alivariya launched two beer varieties under the Brovar brand in 2.5-liter plastic bottles. The brewer uses Germany’s KHS line.

Alivariya was founded in 1864 and transformed into a joint stock company in 1994. In December 2006, Sweden’s Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH) bought a 30% stake in Alivariya.

In April and May 2007 the company had its beer samples certified by Europe’s Danbrew research laboratory as meeting international quality standards.

After Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH) bought a 30% share in Alivariya, the company adopted a long-term quality improvement strategy. In 2007 the co-owner plans to invest in the brewery’s technological facilities a solid $9.7 million.

International appraiser АС Nielsen has estimated that Alivariya controls a 12.5% share in Belarus’ beer market with very fair prospects of doubling that figure in the long run.

The company offers 8 sorts of beer: Extra, Gold, Dozen, Dark, Trinity, Alcohol-Free, Brovar-1, 1864 Premium.

The company was founded in 1864, which makes it the oldest brewery in Belarus ...

Singapore: Mizuho withdraws suit against Asia Pacific Breweries, HVB and SEB continue the suit

The local unit of Mizuho Financial Group said it has applied to the Singapore High Court to withdraw its US$8 million claim against Asia Pacific Breweries (APB), Reuters reported October 8.

"Circumstances have changed since the bank filed its claim against APB three years ago," the Japanese bank said in a statement. "Changed priorities mean that it is no longer in the bank's commercial interest to proceed with the case."

Mizuho and three other foreign banks in Singapore are suing APB, the maker of Tiger Beer, to recover about US$73 million lent to former APB Singapore finance manager Chia Tech Leng.

Chia had made false loan applications in the brewery's name to finance his gambling habit. Mizuho inherited its banking relationship with APB from Fuji Bank, which merged with Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank and the Industrial Bank of Japan to form Mizuho in April 2002.

HVB and Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB) said that they are continuing a multi-million-dollar civil suit against Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) despite the pullout by two Japanese banks, according to Reuters, October 9.

The four banks had earlier demanded that APB, a joint venture between Singapore conglomerate Fraser & Neave and Dutch brewer Heineken, compensate them for losses arising ...

Colombia: SABMiller looks for more beer growth in Colombia

Global brewer SABMiller Plc expects to beat or match its beer volume target in its second most profitable market, Colombia, this year even though it saw a sharp volume spike in the previous year, Reuters reported October 8.

The world's second largest brewer cut beer prices and boosted marketing towards the end of 2006 sending volumes in this Latin American market spiralling higher, but the group is confident it can keep volumes on target this year.

The London-based brewer with a 98 percent share of the Colombian market squeezed retailers' margins, or mark-up, in December 2006, cutting real beer prices by around 5 percent and boosting fourth-quarter (Jan-Mar 2007) volumes by 16 percent.

Analysts say volume growth will have slowed in the first and second quarters up to end-September after the one-off December effect, but SABMiller says beer volumes will not dip below its regional target in its current financial year to March 2008.

"We aim to grow volumes in the medium term by 6-8 percent and we will not be below that range for Colombia in the next 12 months," Karl Lippert, President of SABMiller's South American Bavaria company, told a briefing.

The brewer set the 6-8 percent target for Latin America over a ...

Bulgaria: Carlsberg to invest 10 million Euro in Shumensko Pivo in the next 3 years

Carlsberg Bulgaria, reported sales growth of 26.5% in January-September 2007, Journey.bg informed, citing officials from the Bulgarian office of the company, October 9.

Despite that the result represents a slight retreat from the 30% growth level reached last year, the company has narrowed its lag behind the first- and second-ranked players on the market, Heineken and InBev.

Carlsberg is now in control of 25% of the market, where Heineken holds 30% and InBev holds 26%.

The sales pick-up is largely attributable to soaring sales of Shumensko pivo (24% growth).

The company will continue with investments into technological upgrades. In the next 3 years it plans to invest 20 million BGN (10 million EUR) in brewery based in Shumen.

Malt News
World: Substantial malt contracts have been concluded for 2009 and 2010, with open barley prices

Malt markets are inactive. Maltsters in the EU, but also in the other parts of the world, are almost sold out for 2008, market analysts commented on October 1st. They said: “Some capacities are still open, but lack the barley cover.

Very few maltsters still reserve a quantity for regular customers, who have not covered their 2008 demand yet. Substantial malting contracts have been concluded by the brewing industry for 2009 and 2010, with open barley prices and special clauses for the cost of energy and transport. It is reliably reported that brewers in Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia and Brazil are still short large quantities for 2008.”

World: Analysts cannot foresee a malt price decline before next spring or summer (at the earliest) and cannot exclude even firmer markets for the months to come

All over Western Europe the cost price of malt ex works is EUR 550,- to 570,-, based on barley price levels of around EUR 350,-, average price for crop 2007, delivered malthouses. It is about equal to EUR 600,- FOB in bulk in containerm, market analysts commented on October 1st.

North America reports prices between US$ 700,- and 800,-, delivered breweries or FOB seaports. Analysts said: “We cannot foresee a decline of prices before next spring or summer (at the earliest) and cannot exclude even firmer markets for the months to come.

Barley News
EU: Many malting barely contracts have to be adjusted as cooperatives and trade are in a difficult position

Malting barley contract prices concluded before harvest are way too low today. It leads to great problems, when farmers will not or cannot deliver contractual quantities and/or qualities. Therefore many contracts have to be adjusted; cooperatives and trade are in a difficult position.

The situation is desperate in Czech, Slovakia and Hungary, where pre-harvest prices were too low anyway, and where virtually all contracts are now being declared void by sellers. Maltsters hope that barley withheld by farmers will come on the market later in the season to improve supplies. But it is also certain that imports from overseas and the use of second grade or feed qualities will be necessary to carry the industry through the crop year.

USA: The larger barley crop seemed to assure sufficient supplies for maltsters and brewers however prices shot up, driven by an insatiable demand of barley exporters

The U.S. harvested 4,866 Mill. tons of barley, almost one Million tons more than last year. The larger crop was welcome and seemed to assure sufficient supplies for maltsters and brewers, however, the world market created havoc in the U.S. barley sector, prices shot up, driven by an insatiable demand of barley exporters. Present markets are US$ 330,- for feed barley, delivered Portland, US$ 320,- for six-row and 390,- for two-row malting barley track Minneapolis. U.S. export sales of barley since June have been 657.000 tons.

Australia: ABB Select pool closes, No.2 pool opens

ABB Grain closed its ABB Select No.1 pool with current market indicator prices of $437/tonne for malting barley and $427/tonne for feed, according to ABB’s press release, October 9.

Number 2 Select pools for malting and feed barley have immediately opened with initial indicators of $390/t and $370/t for malting and feed 1 barley respectively.

ABB’s pool manager, Jonathan Wilson, said barley growers across three states had responded well to ABB Select, which was a new pre-harvest commitment pool.

The new pool enabled growers to target a premium on barley prices over the harvest pool for deliveries contracted before harvest.

The above indicator prices are a free on board (FOB) equivalent and growers need to deduct bulk handling costs and freight to bring back the estimates to local silo prices.

“In recent days we’ve seen barley prices ease back from the unprecedented levels that previously existed and with harvest rapidly approaching it is necessary to protect the equity of growers who have supported ABB Select,” Mr Wilson said.

“However, we immediately opened a No.2 pool for both malt and feed barley to ensure that growers who have not yet taken advantage of ABB Select can still do so.”

Mr Wilson said growers, at the time of contracting ...

Russia: Government to impose seasonal export duties on barley

The Russian government decided to impose seasonal export duties on barley, Itar-Tass reported October 8. The conference on Monday chaired by Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov discussed the protection of the domestic food market in conditions of the growth of world prices of a number of farm products. It adopted the decision on the upcoming introduction of seasonal export duties on barley and other products.

Zubkov also made instructions to consider keeping lowered railway tariffs for the transportation of grain and processed grain.

According to the preliminary estimate of the Ministry of Economic Development, the export duty on barley will make up 30 percent, but no less than 70 percent of euro per tonne.

In the opinion of Arkady Zlochevsky, the president of the Russian Grain Union, imposing export duties on grain will help check further price rises. He told radio Echo of Moscow that “lowering grain price is not considered now, as this will eliminate stimuli to producers that formed thanks to the world market. “

Zlochevsky said export duty on barley has actually a prohibitive nature, as the barley harvest is very small and it is unreasonable to export barley.” “As to the grain market, prohibitive duties should not be imposed ...

The use of molecular markers for characterisation of spring barley for breeding to Fusarium head blight resistance

Co., Prague, Czech Republic.

Abstract
Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a barley disease, which occurs every year in various areas of barley cultivation all over the world and the increasing incidence has been confirmed in the Czech Republic also during the last years. We aimed to emply AFLP (Amplified fragment length polymorphism) and SSR (Single sequence repeats) markers to describe diversity among breeding lines with a sufficient level of resistance towards FHB and to find marker(s) associated with the analysed traits. The number of eight accessions including five expected resistance donors and three sensitive lines were tested in the field and laboratory. The field values and the amount of deoxynivalenol were positively correlated (r = 0.92). The laboratory test and content DON manifested also a high correlation (r = 0.73). Several DH lines developed from androgenetic barley progenies of the F1 hybrids between the susceptible line PI 383933 and resistant line PEC 210 or the susceptible line PI 383933 and resistant cultivar Chevron were found resistant towards Fusarium infection in both the field and laboratory tests. Low infestation was found at line DH 37 from combination Chevron × PI 383933 and lines DH48, DH49, DH50 and DH55 from the combination PEC 210 × PI 383933. Cluster analyses based on 68 AFLP and 18 SSR markers demonstrate a genetic relationship among parental genotypes and DH lines. Some DH lines combined a sufficient degree of resistance against FHB and extract content (basic parameters malting quality). Statistically significant differences in malt-extract values were observed between groups of the DH lines possessing and not possessing the AFLP marker CAA/AGC 341bp. The markers will be further evaluated and optionally used for MAS. Keywords: barley; Hordeum vulgare L.; Fusarium head blight; AFLP; SSR; dihaploid lines; malting quality
