On August 12, SABMiller, the world’s No. 2 brewer in terms of sales, unveiled its new Russian brand Tri Bogatyrya, or Three Knights, The Moscow Times reported. According to the same source, Alan Richards, the general director of Transmark, SABMiller’s local representative, said that the company expects to sell 200,000 deciliters of the new brand this month. Tri Bogatyrya represents SABMiller’s first foray in the low-price area. The brand will be sold in 0.5 liter bottles for between 12 and 13 Russian rubles. "We believe that our new brand will occupy a solid position among the main players in this sector of the market," Alan Richards said. The other brands produced by SABMiller are popular local premium brand Zolotaya Bochka as well as Licensed brews Holsten Premium, Miller Genuine Draft and Staropramen.

The Brazilian brewing giant, AmBev, has registered positive profit tendencies for the second quarter of the current year. The company’s profit has increased almost three times if compared to the same period of the last year. The company said the success is due to the price rises and currency gains. It has registered a profit of about US$118 million, with 12% of prices rising. However, the company’s volumes suffered a 2% dip because of slow demand growth in Brazil.

Carlsberg A/S, the Danish brewing group, has registered DKK1.81 billion of operating profit for the first half of the year. This constitute a rise of 34% from DKK1.35 billion in the corresponding period last year. Turnover rose by 8% form DKK16.24 billion to DKK17.52 billion. The company output rose by 22%. Carlsberg had strengthened its position in many markets including Finland, Norway and Great Britain.

Finnish brewer Hartwall, currently being bought by the UK's Scottish & Newcastle (S&N), has reported strong results in the first half of 2002. The group registered a net sales rise of 33% to EUR 484 million, and a volume rise of 27%. Profit before extraordinary items leapt 23% to EUR 79.3 million (US$76.92m), compared to the same period last year. The success is mainly due to its Russian joint venture with Carlsberg , Baltic Beverage Holdings (BBH). This Russian joint venture made up 66% of Hartwall's sales and 88% of its profits. BBH managed to increase volumes by 36%, which corresponds to an increase in market share form 28% to 33%. Meanwhile Russian beer market grew by 16% in the first half of the year.

Weekly tender of Japanese Food Agency (JFA) accomplished with a sensational acquisition of 25,000 tons of Ukrainian barley, a report from AgriUkraine.com revealed on August 6. According to the same source, this is the first acquisition of Ukrainian grain by Japanese traders since 1999, when Japan eased the state control of grain trading. Traditional barley suppliers to Japan, Australian traders, were extremely surprised by this deal. JFA authorities explained their move by a very profitable price.
