China & Thailand: Tsingtao Brewery Q3 net profit up 52.4 pct, new joint venture in Thailand planned

Tsingtao Brewery Co Ltd, China's largest beer maker, said third quarter net profit rose 52.4 pct year-on-year to 328.63 mln yuan under Chinese accounting standards, boosted by strong beer sales, XFN-ASIA reported October 24.

In its third quarter results filed with the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the brewer said it sold 1.634 mln kiloliters of beer in the first three quarters, up 11.1 pct from a year earlier, with sales of its flagship Tsingtao brand up 19.3 pct at 613,000 kiloliters.

Operating revenue in the third quarter was 4.28 bln yuan, up from 3.70 bln yuan a year earlier.

Earning per share was 0.25 yuan in the third quarter, up from 0.165 a year earlier.

Tsingtao Brewery, in which Anheuser-Busch holds a 27 pct stake, said nine months net profit rose 60.81 pct year-on-year to 695.44 mln yuan, with operating revenue of 11.11 bln yuan, up from 9.55 bln yuan a year earlier.

The company gave no detailed guidance for the full year, saying only that it will continue to implement measures to improve purchasing, reorganize product lineups and upgrade technology to offset the impact of increasing costs in the fourth quarter.

Mexico: Grupo Modelo Reports a 24.9% increase in 3rd quarter 2007 gross profit

Grupo Modelo, S.A.B. de C.V. and Subsidiaries (“Grupo Modelo” or “the Company”), the leading brewer in Mexico and producer of the best-selling Mexican beer in the world, announced its financial and operating results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2007, in a press release, October 18.

In the third quarter of 2007, total volume increased 3.8% to 13.1 million hectoliters. The domestic market registered volume increases of 3.8% in Modelo’s brands and 27.7% in the imported brand portfolio, as a result of solid demand in the first half of the quarter and the impact of heavy rains at the end of the period. Regarding brand performance, Estrella outperformed in the quarter with the highest rate of growth.

Export volumes increased 3.0% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The volume sold in the U.S. was affected by the price increase implemented by Crown that reached the final consumer at the end of the second quarter; thus, the volume in the third quarter declined 0.8%. Vietnam: SABMiller to install new brewery line soon

Graham Mackay, Chief Executive Officer of SABMiller Group, while appreciating Vietnam’s business environment with fast economic growth in the meeting last week, said the company would install a new production line in the end of this year at SABMiller Vietnam in Binh Duong’s My Phuoc Industrial Park and will choose a sole distributor in Vietnam, The Saigon Times published October 23.

He added that besides Zorok beer, which is the first beer product of SABMiller Vietnam, the brewery would market several other brands, including Redd’s, a new beverage for women.

SABMiller is the second largest brewing group in the world and has operations in over 60 countries with more than 200 different beer brands worldwide.

Australia: Is Foster's about to sell Melbourne historic brewery?

The details are hidden in a document titled Foster's Sustainability Report, but two facts about the nation's flagship brewer are clear, according to The Age, October 24.

The first is that very soon — quite possibly by Christmas — the historic Melbourne-based company will brew more beer in Queensland than it does in Victoria. The second is that the capacity and efficiency constraints that closed the historic Kent brewery in Sydney's CBD could compromise Melbourne's famous old Abbotsford brewery.

The latest figures from Foster's Group show that Abbotsford and Yatala, the company's high-tech brewery in Brisbane, both produce 430 million litres of beer a year.

Since the closure of the Kent brewery, Yatala has begun supplying Sydney.

"It's a scale issue," said Foster's spokesman Troy Hey. "Yatala's production has been ramped up a number of times over the past five years, to the point where it now matches Abbotsford. The potential for expansion of production at Yatala is enormous.

"There is the land to build on, which we just don't have at Abbotsford."

Hey confirmed that Yatala's production will surpass Abbotsford's — it will soon increase production further to meet Christmas demand.

UK: Scottish & Newcastle says BBH agreement breached

Carlsberg A/S confirms that it has received a letter from Scottish & Newcastle plc and Oy Hartwall Ab alleging breaches of the Shareholders Agreement between Oy Hartwall Ab and Pripps Ringnes Ab, which governs the parties' joint venture Baltic Beverages Holding Ab, in a company’s press release, October 23. Carlsberg believes the claims made have no merit.

Brewer Scottish & Newcastle said on its joint venture partner Carlsberg had breached the agreement over their 50/50 BBH venture, in response to a potential break-up bid approach by the Danish firm and Heineken, Reuters reported October 23.

The Russia-based brewer Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH) is seen as the jewel in Scottish & Newcastle's crown, as it controls over 85 percent of Baltika the biggest brewer in the world's third largest beer market, Russia, and provides around one third of Scottish & Newcastle and Carlsberg's group earnings.

The move by Scottish & Newcastle follows an announcement by Carlsberg and Heineken last week that they might make a joint bid for the British brewer, with Carlsberg intending to acquire Scottish & Newcastle's interest in BBH and its activities in France and Greece.

Japan: Japanese brewers outlook stable despite profitability pressures

Moody's (Nachrichten) Investors Services said demand in the Japanese brewery industry has stagnated and production is decreasing annually, but its rating outlook for the industry for next 12 months is as a whole stable, Thomson Financial News Limited reported October 23.

Moody's said cash flow in the industry remains generally stable, as four rated companies -- Kirin Holdings, Suntory, Asahi Breweries and Sapporo Holdings -- control their capital expenditures and continue to restructure, concentrating management resources on core businesses to increase operating margins.

The ratings agency said leverage has also improved due to the streamlining and restructuring of domestic manufacturing facilities.

However, competition to develop and market new products keeps growing. Product life cycles are getting shorter and material costs are rising -- rises that the beer makers have been forced to accept, but cannot pass on to the consumer, Moody's said.

The ratings agency said in the near-term, the brewery companies' biggest challenge may be expanding and managing investments overseas to raise revenue and strengthen profitability.

Brazil &Russia & India & China: Beer consumption booming in ‘BRIC’ countries

In the rapidly developing BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), consumption of beer is outpacing that for alcoholic drinks overall, Canadean has recently reported.

According to a series of new reports from leading beverage industry analysts Canadean, the huge populations and thriving economies of Brazil, Russia, India and China have helped Beer to grow dynamically in recent years. Indeed, between 2002 and 2007, total consumption across the four countries increased by almost 50%!

Furthermore, the potential of the BRIC countries is huge. China and India are tipped to become the leading global suppliers of manufactured goods while Brazil and Russia are expected to assume a similar status in raw materials. With this natural fit, there is every reason to expect that the BRIC countries will become strong future trading partners. China & India: Carlsberg and Heineken interested in S&N India and China operations

Carlsberg and Heineken intend to jointly acquire Scottish & Newcastle PLC (S&N), the second biggest shareholder of Chongqing Brewery Co., Ltd., according to an announcement by Chongqing Brewery, SinoCast reported October 23.

But the announcement also showed that the deal has not been reached, as well as the bid price. Impressively, the buyers have not contacted with S&N and the price they offered is unsolicited and unwelcome for the latter.

However, the intended acquisition is a sign of Carlsberg's expansion in the Southwest China. Previously, the company bought 100% in Dali Beer, 50% in Lhasa beer, and 50% in Kunming Huashi Beer, respectively. If the deal is reached, the company will indirectly hold some stakes in Chongqing Brewery.

Carlsberg might be the best larger beer brewery around the world since 1847. Its market covers more than 140 countries globally, mainly in Western Europe, Eastern Europe and Asia.

Heineken is interested in the Indian activities of Scottish & Newcastle, a newspaper reported according to Reuters, October 23.

Denmark & Finland & Sweden: The barley market is to go higher for the deliveries after January 2008

The market is clearly splitting up in two: somewhat weaker on October- December 2007 and with a “step” not below 7 €/ton for deliveries after January, according to H. Abildstrøm & Co ApS, October 16.

The slide began on/after the Antwerp exchange 5th October and was triggered by UK sellers who absolutely needed space in the port silos. When trading houses on the continent became aware of this and saw the “black Monday” on wheat the 8th October, quite a lot of “paper barley” came to the market and made Danish/Swedish look equally weaker. Although wheat recovered partly and some early vessels turned up in the South of England the weaker price structure lingers on. Main reason: most maltsters are well covered till January and longer.

Canada: Barley exports to increase to 2.0 Mt in 2006-2007

Canadian barley exports are forecast to increase to 2.7 Mt from 2.0 Mt in 2006-2007, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, October 12. Of this total, feed barley exports are expected to increase to 0.9 Mt, up from 0.2 Mt last year with Japan and Saudi Arabia as the major markets Feed barley exports will be constrained by ocean freight rates which have reached record high levels and the strength of the Canadian Dollar continues to depress domestic barley prices. The barley market will be impacted by increased production in Australia, western Canada and the volume of US corn that will be imported into western Canada. Carry-out stocks are forecast to decline again this year, to about 1.4 Mt.

Japan

Japan is the world’s second largest feed barley importer, and Canada’s major market. Barley is a unique feed ingredient for cattle in Japan, as it produces beef with a firm, white marbling of fat preferred by consumers. Australia: GrainCorp barley pools open for 2007/08

GrainCorp has opened its barley pools for the 2007/08 harvest, with a barley pool operating in South Australia for the first time following the deregulation of the SA barley industry, Farm Online reported October 23.

Along with that, there will be GrainCorp pools in all states as the company seeks to increase its share of the grain marketing trade.

In Western Australia, GrainCorp has licences to export malting and feed barley and the company is hoping its pools will play a major role in accumulation of cargo for these opportunities.

He said that the domestic market would be a major focus for GrainCorp, given the likely shortfalls in feed grain across the east coast.

"Given the season, we will again focus on opportunities in the domestic market as well as the recently deregulated container trade, particularly in Asian markets," Mr Varley said.

Phenological Development of Spring Barley in a Short-Season Growing Area

Abstract:
Methods for the determination of alcohol in low and non alcohol beers by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), near infra red spectroscopy (NIR) and catalytic combustion (CC) were collaboratively tested by the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention according to ISO Standard 5725 in order to determine their suitability for publication in Analytica-EBC. Accuracy, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) values are presented. The GC-FID method was found to have better within and between laboratory precision than the other two methods for the determination of alcohol in the non alcohol (0,007- 0,08 % V/V) beers and comparable precision for the low alcohol (0,37-0,81 % V/V) beers. Over the whole range 0,007 to 0,81 % V/V of alcohol, repeatability (r95) was found to be dependent on the mean value and was 0,096 m % V/V whereas reproducibility (R95) was found to be independent of the mean value and was 0,090 % V/V. The gas chromatographic method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC as the reference method for the determination of alcohol in non and low alcohol (<1,0 % V/V) beer samples. The NIR and CC methods have acceptable within and between laboratory precision figures for the determination of alcohol in the low alcohol beers. For the NIR method, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean value and were 0,022 % V/V and 0,103 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol beer samples (>0,37 % V/V). For the CC method, both repeatability (r95) and the reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean and were 0,016 % V/V and 0,087 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol (>0,37 % V/V) beer samples.
