Brewery News
USA: Anheuser-Busch profit jumps 11% in 3rd quarter 2007

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. reported that third quarter 2007 net sales increased 7.9 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding normalization items in 2007) increased 15.9 percent, according to company’s press release, October 24. For the nine months of 2007, net sales increased 5.7 percent and diluted earnings per share (excluding normalization items in both years) improved 9.3 percent.

“We are pleased with our earnings performance this quarter, with all of our operating segments reporting higher sales and profits,” said August A. Busch IV, president and chief executive officer of the company. “Sales volume and revenue growth in our U.S. beer business benefited from our broadened beer portfolio, with greater participation in the high end segment. The wholesaler transition and supply issues we encountered earlier this year regarding the InBev European brands have been resolved. Earnings contribution from our international segment accelerated, led by Grupo Modelo. And we continue to expect the company’s 2007 earnings per share increase to exceed our long term growth target of 7 to 10 percent.”

Consistent with the pattern in recent years, Anheuser-Busch plans to implement price increases on the majority of its U.S. beer volume in early 2008, with increases in several states in the fourth ...

Denmark&Netherlands: Carlsberg and Heineken made take-over offer, S&N rejected the proposal calling it derisory

The Consortium confirms that earlier it submitted to the Chairman of S&N a written proposal and requested a meeting to further discuss a possible offer, according to Carlsberg’s press release, October 25. The letter referred to the exclusive agreement between Carlsberg and Heineken as well as setting out the terms upon which it would be prepared to proceed with a cash offer at a price of 720 pence per share for the entire issued and to be issued ordinary share capital of S&N (the “Proposal”).

The price of 720 pence per share set out in the Proposal represents a compelling proposition for S&N shareholders:

- a multiple of 13.2 x S&N’s EV/EBITDA for the year ended 31 December 2006; and

- a premium of 36% to the share price of 531 pence on 28 March 2007 (being the date immediately before speculation first arose around a possible offer for S&N).

- a value which is significantly in excess of the standalone independent value of S&N.

Under the Proposal, the making of any offer would be subject to certain pre-conditions, all of which are waivable at the discretion of the Consortium, and all of which the Consortium believes to be ...

Japan: Asahi Breweries January-September Group net profit up 9.9 pct y/y

Asahi Breweries Ltd. reported that its group net profit grew 9.9% on year during the January-September period, citing efforts to cut costs, according to Dow Jones Newswires, October 25.

Asahi said its group net profit came to Y34.12 billion in the just-ended nine-month period, up from Y31.04 billion a year ago.

Its group sales rose 1.7% to Y1.082 trillion from Y1.064 trillion, partly due to the inclusion of baby food maker Wakodo Co., which Asahi began accounting for in the April-June quarter last year.

Asahi faces a challenge meeting its profit target as the alcoholic beverage market continues to shrink and higher raw materials costs threaten its bottom line. But the company managed to a post a higher profit by cutting its sales promotion costs.

Underscoring its move into the food and health-related fields, which Asahi hopes will help it increase revenue, the company said it will buy all the Asahi Soft Drinks shares it doesn't own via a tender offer between Friday and Dec. 6. Asahi currently holds a 51.17% stake in the soft drink unit.

For the full business year ending December, Asahi left unchanged its group earnings outlook. It continues to forecast a group net profit of ...

Serbia: Heineken in race for MB Brewery

Speculation is rife that the new owner of Novi Sad-based MB Brewery might be Heineken, according to B92, October 25.

Brewery owners are in negotiations with four big global beer priducers about the sale of their company, MB Advertising Director Vladislava Epifanić has meanwhile confirmed.

The four companies expressed interest a year and a half ago, she said, but declined to reveal their identities "for business reasons."

Epifanić also would not specify if any of the four were already present in the Serbian market.

But Belgrade daily Biznis reported on Wednesday that one of the global leaders in beer production, Holland's Heineken, was "only a step away from acquiring MB Brewery, although executives claim that the contract has not been signed yet."

The Novi Sad brewery was constructed in 2002, and has a production capacity of five million hectoliters of beer, which equals Serbia's annual consumption; therefore no one should be surprised by foreign investors' interest, according to Epifanić.

The Business Register Agency says that MB's assets are worth some EUR 145mn, while its revenues in 2006 amounted to EUR 18.5mn, with a EUR 6.5mn profit.

MB Brewery is owned by Rodić MB Holding.

China: Beijing Yanjing Brewery Q3 net profit up 36.6 pct y/y on higher sales

Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co Ltd reported un-audited net profit of 192.71 mln yuan for the third quarter of the year, up 36.6 pct from 141.08 mln achieved a year earlier, on the back of higher sales, Thomson Financial News Limited reported October 26.

The beer maker achieved total operating revenue of 2.61 bln yuan during the three months to September, compared with 1.91 bln a year ago. Earnings per share rose to 0.175 yuan from 0.128.

In the first nine months, it sold 3.17 mln kiloliters of beer, up 16.97 pct from a year ago.

The company posted total revenue of 6.39 bln yuan in the first three quarters, up from 5.12 bln last year, while net profit rose to 386.16 mln yuan from 295.51 mln.

The company did not provide any earnings forecast for the remainder of the year.

Czech Republic: Czech beer output up 1.5% in January-September 2007

Czech beer output reached 15.08 million hectolitres in the first nine months of 2007, up 1.5% year-on-year, with growth ebbing between July and September, according to data of the Czech Beer and Malt Association, ČTK reported October 25.

In Jan to June, breweries reported record results, output up by nearly 4 percent year-on-year.

"The second half is quite different than the first one," the Association's chairman Jan Vesely told CTK.

The warm weather started much earlier this year compared with last year's winter, he said.

Weather conditions in the second half of the year, however, were more or less similar. Worse results for the period will be mainly affected by a slower growth in beer exports, said Vesely. Figures are not available yet, though, he added.

Beer exports in the first half of the year amounted to 1.78 million hectolitres, a growth of 4.2 percent on the year, while in the same year-ago period it was a two-digit growth.

"Such a growth could not last for ever," said Vesely.

Full-year beer output could possibly rise to 20 million hectolitres, said Vesely. Last year, it totalled 19.8 million.

India: Multinational beer companies closing in on United Breweries

Vijay Mallya's United Breweries has held a vice-like grip over the Indian beer market with the Kingfisher, Kalyani and Sandpiper brands. With 137 million cases (12 bottles each), it has a 45 per cent market share, according to Rediff News, October 26. But now multinationals are closing in on UB.

SABMiller has 35 per cent market share after its acquisitions in the country. Its biggest buy was Shaw Wallace's beer business. It is yet to roll out its global flagship, Castle, in India.

Other global brands such as Budweiser, Heineken, Carlsberg, Cobra and Beck's have managed a 12 per cent market share.

Thus, overseas companies now lord over the beer market with a total 47 per cent share.

"The entry of MNC beer companies is likely to stimulate the industry. But, with its proven experience and leadership, UB may capture a dominant share in this growth," says a UB spokesperson.

For MNC beer companies, India is the next frontier. Per capita beer consumption is still low at 0.7 litres a year.

Current growth is pitched at 13 per cent and the beer market is expected to more than double to 23.3 million hectolitres by 2012. Hence, despite consumption being low, ...

Barley News
UK: Growers consider spring malting barley as alternative to wheat

Growers confident of achieving a full malting specification may be better off switching from late drilled winter wheat to a leading spring malting barley, given grain prices quoted for harvest 2008, FarmingUK reported October 24.

That's the view of Graham Redman, research economist at Andersons, who points out that gross margin figures based on prices for harvest 2008 movement put spring malting barley ahead of winter wheat by over £180/ha.

"Bear in mind that these figures do not take account of any value for baled straw, which in the case of spring barley can be worth anything up to £150/ha, depending on location and quality," he says.

That said, where the straw is sold, higher P and K inputs would be required to replace nutrient removal, costing in the region of £15-20/ha, he notes.

Mr Redman's gross margin calculations are based on a grower achieving just 80% of HGCA Recommended List yields, and use grain prices quoted by national merchants during October 2007 for 2008 harvest, and input costs based on merchant recommendations. For feed winter wheat, these equate to a yield of 8.16 t/ha at a grain price of £115/t, and with a total variable cost of £325/ha, to give a gross margin ...

Canada: Domestic barley prices to increase

Canadian domestic feed barley prices, No.1 CW I/S Lethbridge, are forecast at $180-200/t versus $165/t in 2006- 2007, according to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, October 12. The Lethbridge feed barley price has averaged $182/t to-date for 2007-2008.

Barley prices are expected to be strongly supported throughout 2007- 2008 by low world barley stocks (and coarse grain stocks in general), and high domestic and international feed use demand. However, the strength of the Canadian dollar is expected to pressure Canadian prices in 2007- 2008. In addition, increased imports of corn into western Canada have the potential to pressure feed barley prices.

Scientific Digest
Phenological Development of Spring Barley in a Short-Season Growing Area

Submitted by A. Toivola, P. Varjú and J. Torrent on behalf of the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention

Abstract:
Methods for the determination of alcohol in low and non alcohol beers by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID), near infra red spectroscopy (NIR) and catalytic combustion (CC) were collaboratively tested by the Analysis Committee of the European Brewery Convention according to ISO Standard 5725 in order to determine their suitability for publication in Analytica-EBC. Accuracy, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) values are presented. The GC-FID method was found to have better within and between laboratory precision than the other two methods for the determination of alcohol in the non alcohol (0,007- 0,08 % V/V) beers and comparable precision for the low alcohol (0,37-0,81 % V/V) beers. Over the whole range 0,007 to 0,81 % V/V of alcohol, repeatability (r95) was found to be dependent on the mean value and was 0,096 m % V/V whereas reproducibility (R95) was found to be independent of the mean value and was 0,090 % V/V. The gas chromatographic method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC as the reference method for the determination of alcohol in non and low alcohol (<1,0 % V/V) beer samples. The NIR and CC methods have acceptable within and between laboratory precision figures for the determination of alcohol in the low alcohol beers. For the NIR method, repeatability (r95) and reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean value and were 0,022 % V/V and 0,103 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol beer samples (>0,37 % V/V). For the CC method, both repeatability (r95) and the reproducibility (R95) were found to be independent of the mean and were 0,016 % V/V and 0,087 % V/V respectively over the range of alcohol tested (0,007-0,81 % V/V). The method is recommended for inclusion in Analytica-EBC for the determination of alcohol in low alcohol (>0,37 % V/V) beer samples.
