1. Industry news

The German manufacturer of brewery equipment, Steinecker Maschinenfabrik, and the Luxembourg beer brewer, Bofferding Brasserie Nationale, joined to commercialise the brewing technique, Merlin process, which reduces evaporation in wort boiling to 3-4% from the usual 8-10%. The two companies have won an EU European Business Award for the Environment for this major process in beer production. The companies said that the use of moderate boiling conditions would save 55% of the energy required for boiling wort, as water consumption, cleaning agents and wastewater are reduced. The main achievement is that the quality of beer is improved. They said this technique has an “enormous potential world-wide”.

Russian brewer based in St. Petersburg, JSC "Baltika Brewery", intends to increase its output by 17.8% in 2002, boost exports to Europe and Asia and franchise production of its beer abroad, The Moscow times.com reported. "We plan to export 1 million hl this year. Last year we exported 400,000 hl. Exports account for 6% of Baltika's total sales, but the company's aim is to increase this figure to 10% by 2005, thus making Baltika a truly international brand," the company's export director, Dmitry Kistev, said. Baltika exports its beer to 27 countries, like Germany, Israel, Greece, Portugal, France. 80% of its exports go to the Baltics.....www.e-malt.com

Interbrew intends to enlarge its already dominant area in the home market by purchasing the privately owned distributor, Van Maele. Interbrew brands already account for 60% of sales at Van Maele, which remains the largest independent beer distributor in Belgium.

Shepherd Neame, the Kent-based brewer and pub operator has reported strong results for 52 weeks ended 29 June 2002. This is its 27th consecutive year of profit growth. Turnover is up 10.5% to £78.8m. Trading profit (excluding property profits) is up 12.6% to £7.7m. Total brewing volume is up 6.1% with strong Spitfire sales – up 29.2%. So, Spitfire ale is again the star performer. “To develop the brand further we have committed to a TV campaign to run in November and December,” the company reported. Jonathan Neame, Managing Director, said: “Although the UK economic outlook is uncertain, we believe that we are in an excellent position to grow our brands and become the leading specialist brewer in the UK.”

After eight year absence on the US market, the Danish brewing group Carlsberg Breweries intends to relaunch its Tuborg Gold beer brand through the Westport, Connecticut-based Bowmont Corporation. The company has declared that it had conferred the exclusive rights to import and distribute Tuborg Gold in the US to Bowmont Corporation. “Tuborg Gold has strong international pedigree and has proved successful, not only in its Scandinavian home market, but also in many export markets. We believe that Bowmont Corporation has the sales network and experience to transfer that success to the US " said Torbjörn Wicklander, senior export manager for Carlsberg Breweries. Tuborg was first exported to the US in the 1880s, with some of the first shipments arriving on the same ships that brought settlers from Scandinavia.
