2. Industry news
Carlsberg Breweries will change its organisation from December the 1st this year. Søren Lisbjerg has been appointed Supply Chain Director for Carlsberg Denmark and will also join the board of management of Carlsberg Denmark. This position is currently occupied by Jette W. Knudsen, which is leaving the company by reason of “that over the summer there have been some production problems, especially in connection with the launching of cans in Denmark”, Carlsberg said.
"We have discarded 3.3 million cans because the beer stank and tasted sour and was cloudy," Carlsberg Communications manager Staffan Bremander said.
Seven Russian breweries are rated among the countries top 200 companies, according to the 8th annual rating report of Russian companies made by the Expert RA rating agency. Sales volume, gain rates, balance profit, profit after taxation, profitability, average quantity of employees and labour productivity were the parameters of the rated companies taken into consideration.
These seven top breweries hold leading positions in profitability and labour productivity: Baltika brewery, Ochakovo brewery, Krasni Vostok brewery, Yarpivo brewery, Stepan Razin brewery, Moscow-Efes brewery.
The Czech drinks group, Drinks Union, has become the owner of Pivovary Kutna Hora, a brewery located in the town of Kutna Hora in Central Bohemia. Drinks Union plans to expand the brewery’s output from 70,000 hl to 250,000 hl and intends to add new products while maintaining the company’s traditional brands.
Two years ago the town of Kutna Hora took over the brewery from Pivovary Bohemia in order to maintain local beer production. In spite of the acquisition by Drinks Union, the town intends to retain ownership of the brewery’s premises and some of the plant.
An other purchase of Drinks Union was finalized in September, when it acquired Pivovary Louny.
The Russian brewer, Sun Interbrew, part of the Interbrew beer group, has reported sales for the second quarter of 2002 of EUR 128.1 million, 11% up from the value of EUR 115.4 million for the same period of 2001. However, sales in volume terms remained the same. The company registered a net profit of EUR 3.5 million for the second quarter of 2002, which is 59% down if compared to the figure of EUR 8.6 million in the second quarter of 2001.
Sun Interbrew’s Russian brands Sibirskaya Korona, Tolstyak and Klinskoye registered 13%, 14% and 18% rise in sales respectively. Chernigovskoye and Taller, Sun Interbrew’s Ukrainian brands, also saw large sales.
The German manufacturer of brewery equipment, Steinecker Maschinenfabrik, and the Luxembourg beer brewer, Bofferding Brasserie Nationale, joined to commercialise the brewing technique, Merlin process, which reduces evaporation in wort boiling to 3-4% from the usual 8-10%. The two companies have won an EU European Business Award for the Environment for this major process in beer production.
The companies said that the use of moderate boiling conditions would save 55% of the energy required for boiling wort, as water consumption, cleaning agents and wastewater are reduced. The main achievement is that the quality of beer is improved. They said this technique has an “enormous potential world-wide”.
