China: Tsingtao shares fall in price as Merrill Lynch cuts its stock rating

Tsingtao Brewery Co., China’s largest beer company by sales, headed for the biggest drop in three weeks in Hong Kong trading after Bank of America Corp.’s Merrill Lynch & Co. cut its stock rating on concern revenue growth will slow, Bloomberg reported on February, 3.

The Chinese brewer declined 3.5 percent to HK$14.38 at the midday trading break in Hong Kong, set for the steepest slide since Jan. 8. Its Shanghai-traded shares slid 1.8 percent.

“Weaker consumer sentiment is taking a toll on beer consumption,” Merrill Lynch analysts Denise Chai and Tina Long said in a note to clients on February, 3. “Tsingtao appears to have missed our 2008 volume growth forecast.” They lowered their recommendation on the brewery to “underperform” from “buy.”

Slowing income growth is cooling demand for beer in China, whose economy grew 9 percent in 2008 after a 13 percent expansion in 2007. Per-capita disposable income in Chinese urban areas rose 8.4 percent in 2008, slowing from a 12.2 percent rate a year earlier, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The brewery also bought a “large amount” of barley, an ingredient used in beer making, at a “relatively high price” when prices of the grain surged in the ...More Info

Comparison of Antioxidant Activity of Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and Malt Extracts with the Content of Free Phenolic Compounds Measured by High Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled with CoulArray Detector

Marketa Dvorakova, Maelle Douanier, Marie Jurkova, Vladimir Kellner and Pavel Dostalek

Abstract:
J. Inst. Brew. 114(2), 150–159, 2008 Hot water (45°C) extracts of ten barley varieties and their corresponding malts were analyzed in terms of antioxidant activity. The ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and radical scavenging activity (ABTS), ranged from 0.23–0.45 mg GAE/gdw for malt and 0.12–0.25 mg GAE/gdw for barley. The hull-less malt KM 1910 was the variety with the best antioxidant properties, whereas the highest antioxidant capacity for barley was detected for the variety Merlin. A significant positive correlation between the methods FRAP, ABTS and ITT was found (p < 0.01). The influence of fertilization (20 kg N/ha) on barley antioxidant capacity was studied. The results obtained suggest that the impact of fertilization was not evident and that it depends significantly on barley genotype. The total polyphenol content, as measured according to Folin-Ciocalteu’s method, ranged from 0.6–2.9 mg GAE/gdw and correlated positively with all the antioxidant methods used (p < 0.01). Free phenolic compounds were measured by HPLC with a CoulArray detector. The dominant phenolic compound was ferulic acid and its content ranged from 12.5–21.9 and 7.8–56.1 mg/gdw for barley and malt, respectively. The content of catechin ranged from 11.0–17.0 mg/gdw in barley and 0.9–12.1 mg/gdw in malt. Key words: antioxidant capacity, barley, electrochemical detection, HPLC, malt.
