1. Industry news
In Sweden the harvest of malting barley was estimated at 350,000 t in 2002, against 200,000 t in 2001. This rise can be explicated partly by the utilization of Astoria variety. On the assumption of its production rise, Viking Malt, a Swedish malting company, announced on December 18, 2002 the enlarging (+100,000 t) of its malthouse de Halmstad.
By the end of the year on December 30, Interbrew, The World's Local Brewer©, announced that its acquisition of Brauergilde Hannover AG has closed, fully in accordance with the previously announced terms and conditions. In compliance with the German Take-over Act, a wholly-owned German subsidiary of Interbrew has announced mandatory offers for the remaining shares of Gilde Brauerei AG, Hanover, and Hofbrauhaus Wolters AG, Braunschweig. The terms of the mandatory offers will be set forth in the respective offer documents after clearance of the publication by the German financial services regulator.
"We are pleased that our acquisition of Gilde Brauerei has now been closed", said Dieter Ammer, Regional President Germany, Southern Europe & Export. "The Gilde brands will considerably strengthen our German platform and enhance the product offering to our consumers."
German beer lovers are facing a lack of their favourite beverage. The shortage was caused by the introduction of controversial recycling laws in the country today. According to reports so far, 14,000 shops have stopped sales of canned beer.
Germany's top court rejected on Friday, December 27, 2002, an appeal by a group, which opposes a government law to introduce deposit charges on non-refillable cans and bottles.
The constitutional court, which threw out an appeal by a group of retailers last week, turned down a new motion to delay the launch of deposits on January 1.....more info
According to Independet.co.uk, the outgoing chief executive of the Belgian beer giant Interbrew is pressing ahead with plans to build Canada's biggest private residence after overcoming protests from neighbours about the design of the house.
Hugo Powell, who surprised the brewing world on Friday, December 20, with news of his early retirement, was forced to scale back the original design for his Ontario mansion after some of the more grandiose elements upset residents.
The designs for the house, described by one Interbrew source as a "personal dream" for Mr Powell, replicate in part a castle lived in by Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife.
The main house will be 48,000 square feet, down from an original 54,322 square feet.
The Colombian brewer, Bavaria, seems to win the battle for the Peruvian brewing force, Backus, following its announcement of acquisition the stake in Backus owned by the Venezuelan brewer, Empresas Polar.
According to the company’s announcement made on December 20, Bavaria had paid $567.8m to Empresas Polar for 24.6% stake in Backus. Thus the acquisition increases the Bavaria’s stake in Backus to 49.1%. Having exceeded the 25% threshold, Bavaria confirmed that it would launch an official public offer to minority shareholders for the rest of Backus's shares.
Polar's decision to sell to Bavaria came as something of a surprise as the two companies seemed locked in an acrimonious battle for Backus, which enjoys a virtual monopoly of the beer market in Peru.
The Peruvian market regulator, Conasev, is investigating these allegations and counter-claims that Polar had itself already exceeded the 25% threshold.
