BBH, Baltic Beverages Holding, has now risen to become Ukraine's third biggest beer supplier. The Scottish & Newcastle-Carlsberg Breweries-owned brewer increased its Ukraine beer sales by 30% in January 2003 up to 16,6 million litres of beer against January 2002. “Slavutich” (Zaporozhye) owned by BBH increased the sales in January by 25% up to 11.2 million litres against January 2002. OAO “Lvovskaia Pivovarnya” increased the sales by 32% up to 5.4 million litres.
BBH increased the beer sales in 2002 by 26.6% up to 280 million litres.
The Peruvian brewer, Backus y Johnston (Backus), reported net sales in the fourth quarter rose from PS258.0m to PS292.4m. Company registered net profit of PS64.9m in the fourth quarter of 2002, up from PS43.2m in the corresponding quarter of 2001. For the full year, net profit rose from PS118.6m to PS216.9m, on sales up from PS880.5m to PS1.03 billion.
Having acquired a 24.5% stake in Backus, which has a virtual monopoly in the Peruvian beer market, in July 2002, the Colombian brewing group, Bavaria, acquired a further 24.6% stake in the company from Empresas Polar of Venezuela in December, giving Colombia a 49.1% stake in Backus. Under Peruvian regulations, this must trigger an open offer for the company, and Bavaria announced in January that it was planning to make an offer in March for the outstanding shares in Backus at $27.00 per share.
Heineken, the Dutch brewer, is going to change the name of the Saint-Petersburg brewery, OOO “Bravo International”, into OOO “Pivovarnya Heineken”, with effect from the March 1st 2003. The brewery Bravo is the producer of Bochikariov, Ohota and Loewenbrau beer brands. Bravo output about 280 million litres of beer in 2002 and according to analysts held 5.2% stake of Russian beer market.
Heineken acquired the brewery a year ago in April 2002 from the Icelandic founders of the company. The deal of the price was not revealed, however in February 2002 representatives of Heineken announced that they appraise the brewery at US$ 400 million and that it will take a year to complete the deal. Hence the change of the name from ‘Bravo’ into ‘Pivovarnya Heineken’ means Heineken becomes the full owner of the company.
After renaming into Pivovarnya Heineken, the company will begin the production of a beer brand with the same name by the middle of 2003 year, according to Heineken. The company will also keep the production of the current beer brands.
Carlton & United Breweries (CUB), the Australian brewing division of Foster’s Group Limited (Foster’s) announced on February 14 it had completed the transaction to acquire Bulmer Australia Limited (BAL), a wholly owned subsidiary of UK based HP Bulmer.
The company announced on 19 December 2002 its intention to acquire BAL subject to two pre-conditions, which have now been met. Those conditions involved HP Bulmer UK shareholder and Australian regulatory approval. The total purchase consideration is $63 million.
