2. Industry news
Finland's Hartwall family, owner of nearly 12% of Scottish & Newcastle Plc, said it had no plans to reduce its stake in the British brewer in the near future, despite being freed to do so, Reuters reported. The Hartwall family holds about 101 million shares in S&N after the family-controlled Hartwall company was bought by S&N for 1.2 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) last year.
The family is free to sell the stake - worth about 350 million pounds ($550 million) -- from Friday under the terms of the deal, but it said it would not do so. "We've been in the beer business for 167 years, we like the business and we want to stay there as long as we think it's a good investment," he said.
Erik Hartwall is managing director of the Hartwall family holding company and a non-executive director of S&N. Erik Hartwall declined to say how long he expected the family to hold the shares, but said it was "very relaxed" about recent weakness in the share price...more info
The US brewing combine, Anheuser-Busch, has announced its opposition to a planned CLP169 billion-dividend payment by the Chilean drinks group, Compania Cervecerias Unidas (CCU). A-B is the second largest shareholder in CCU with 20%. The extraordinary dividend was proposed on January 14. The same day Heineken announced it was to buy a participation in CCU currently owned by the German group, Schoerghuber Stiftung & Co.
"We don't think it's in the best interest of CCU or of all of its shareholders that the company assumes debt to pay an extraordinary dividend at this time," said Steven Burrows, president and chief executive officer of Anheuser-Bush International.
However, in January it was announced that Heineken is proposing to buy Schoerghuber Stiftung's stake at a premium without making a tender offer to other shareholders.
Brazil's AmBev SA, the world's fifth-largest brewer, said it expected to sell slightly more beer and invest more in 2003, as well as make further cost cuts, according to Reuters. Marcel Telles, the co-president of the board of Companhia de Bebidas das Americas' (AmBev), said the firm expected to increase its beer sales volume by between 3% and 4% in 2003, or slightly above consumption growth.
"By market share, our internal target is to hold it around 70 (percent)," he told a conference call with analysts to discuss the company's fourth-quarter and annual results.
AmBev executives said the company aimed to make cost and expense savings of between 150 million reais and 200 million reais ($42 million-$55 million) in 2003 on ingredient and packaging costs and improving sales and distribution.
Colombia's largest brewer, Bavaria, has registered a net profit of 336.2 billion pesos ($113.8 million) in 2002, up 79.4% in peso terms versus its 2001 net profit, the Securities Superintendency said on Wednesday. Bavaria, Latin America's fourth-largest brewer, made profits of 187.4 billion pesos ($62.4 million) in 2001.
The company, which controls about 95% of Colombia's beer market and has been expanding aggressively in Latin America under a $1 billion plan, said it would propose increasing its annual dividend by 6% to 402.9 pesos (13 cents) per share during a shareholders' meeting on March 21, Reuters reported.
Shares of Bavaria, which are among the most liquid in Colombia's small stock exchange, fell 0.72% to 13,850 pesos. A Bavaria spokeswoman said the better 2002 results were within the firm's expectations. More details will be provided on Thursday, the spokeswoman said...more info
