ABSTRACT
U.S. researchers produced beers with hop products containing different amounts of polyphenols to investigate the impact on beer staling. They found that beers high in hop polyphenols did not suppress the loss of isoalpha acids during aging but were determined to be the least flavor-stable by ESR. However, the presence of hop polyphenols suppressed the formation of staling aldehydes during ageing as measured by SPME-GC-MS. It is clear that there is no easy conclusion about the impact of hop polyphenols in beer, but the picture is slowly becoming clearer.

Heineken and Bavaria have said they are “disappointed” after Europe's highest court rejected their appeals against a reduction in fines for their part in a cartel, Dutch media reported last week.

In 2007, the two brewers were fined a total of EUR273.8 mln (US$363 mln) by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for their involvement in a cartel on the Dutch beer market from 1996 to 1999. InBev, now Anheuser-Busch InBev, escaped a fine for blowing the whistle on the collusion.

Heineken's fine was reduced last year by the ECJ’s general court to EUR198 mln. Bavaria's fine was also cut last June from 22.85 mln to 20.71 mln.

But both companies argued the fines should be reduced further for legal reasons. Among the brewers' arguments were that the European Commission should not have compared the cartel with a Belgium cartel when calculating fines.

The ECJ however on December, 19 rejected “all pleas put forward”, confirming the fines.

A Heineken spokesperson said: “We are disappointed that the ECJ has rejected our arguments. As there is no possibility to further appeal in this case, we have to accept the court's decision.

Beer is Japan’s most popular alcoholic beverage, and three brands dominate the market: Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo, all German-inspired lagers introduced in the late 19th century. But smaller producers are generating an interest in ji-biru, or Japanese craft beer, The Washington Post reported on December, 26.

Japanese brewers are reinterpreting American and European beer styles, adding their own balance and refinement, and sometimes local ingredients, including rice and sweet potatoes.

A few artisanal breweries paved the way for a more vibrant scene, including the Kiuchi Brewery, whose Hitachino Nest beers have become the best-known ji-biru in the United States. Riffs on American pale ales and Belgian styles have become common.

Especially widespread are straightforward versions of foreign styles with nuances considered distinctly Japanese.

“Even though they have IPAs and a huge variety of styles, these beers don’t often have the aggressive flavor profiles that you find in a lot of American craft beers,” said Izakaya Seki’s Cizuka Seki, who offers about a dozen varieties.

Marlborough, New Zealand-based Moa Brewing Company has its sights set on Brazil, with its first shipment of premium beer due to arrive in the South American country next month, Marlborough Express reported on December, 27.

Moa general manager Gareth Hughes said the deal with Brazilian distributor Oceania Group coincides with the renewal of their sponsorship deal with the New Zealand Olympic Team for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil.

Brazil was one of the fastest growing beer markets in the world and held huge potential for the craft beer company, he said.

"Brazil already has a well developed economy beer market that is showing really strong growth but we are confident there is potential in the premium beer market too."

The deal with the New Zealand Olympic Committee will help Moa gain a greater foothold and understanding of the Latin American market, he said. Baltika Razlivnoe brewed locally by Carlsberg Ukraine will become available in Ukrainian stores as from mid-January 2013, Pivnoe Delo reported on December, 26.

The beer will be represented in an original glass bottle of 0.44 l in points of sale all over the country. The first batch of of Baltika Razlivnoe was bottled this month at the Kyiv brewery of Carlsberg Ukraine.

Baltika Razlivnoe first appeared in Ukrainian stores in August this year. This was the first batch of the product imported from Russia.

At the moment the portfolio of the Baltika brand in Ukraine includes four types: Baltika 0 Non-Alcoholic, Baltika №3 Classic, Baltika №7 Export and Baltika №9 Strong.

AC Nielsen states that in September 2012 (representing the results of the first 9 months of the current year) the brand share in the premium segment was 26% by volume and 28% by value.

According to preliminary estimates, Russia’s 2013 winter grain crop may total 38.6 mln metric tons, with forecast yield of 2.7 t/ha (average in the past five years), UkrAgroConsult reported last week, citing Russian Deputy Premier Arkadiy Dvorkovich.

As of mid-December, winter grains in Russia had been planted on 15.7 mln ha (16.3 mln ha in 2011), including 13 mln ha of winter wheat, 2 mln ha of winter rye, 0.4 mln ha of winter barley, and 0.3 mln ha of triticale.

Altogether, winter crop plantings for the 2013 harvest total 16.2 mln ha (16.8 mln ha in 2011).
