How to efficiently dry hop?
ABSTRACT
A work presented at the Young Scientist Symposium was looking into the different
methodologies of dry hopping in the US. In comparing different methods these researchers found that dry hopping with pellets (compared to cone hops) yielded in a better aroma extraction but also higher polyphenol values. It was also found that stirring increases the aroma extraction compared to static dry hopping (even with very long contact time). The concentration of selected marker compounds, as linalool or geraniol, did not increase further after approximately 6hrs. So dry hopping can perhaps be accomplished much faster than generally believed?

USA, MA: Beer sales in Massachusetts grew by 2.2% in 2012
|
Craft beer sales in the Bay State continued to climb in 2012, according to new data from the Beer Distributors of Massachusetts, a trade association advocating on behalf of family-owned wholesalers, brewbound.com reported on April, 24.
Beer sales to Massachusetts distributors totalled 4,169,941 barrels for the 12-month period ending December 31, 2012.
In 2012, craft breweries sold 66,565 new barrels in Massachusetts, a 12.3 percent uptick from 2011. Specialty import offerings were up too, with the addition of 7,740 new barrels, a 23.37 percent increase from 2011.
Much of that growth is coming from large craft brands like Boston Beer Company, Harpoon Brewery, Shipyard Brewing and Sierra Nevada. Collectively, those four companies sold 30,519 new barrels of craft beer in Massachusetts during 2012.
Total beer sales in Massachusetts grew by 2.2 percent, or 90,757 barrels, in 2012. Craft and specialty beers now comprise nearly 15.5 percent of total beer sales in the Commonwealth.
Brian Murphy, the director of sales and marketing for Massachusetts Beverage Alliance (MBA), said he anticipates additional growth in the craft segment in 2013. MBA, which launched in September of 2011, is a statewide network of wholesalers that distributes 14 different craft brands. The company recently signed distribution agreements with four

Canada, QC: Les Brasseurs RJ takes full ownership of McAuslan Brewing
|
Montreal breweries Les Brasseurs RJ and McAuslan Brewing have jointly announced on April, 23 that the former company has taken full ownership of the latter, in a deal that will see McAuslan founders Peter McAuslan and Ellen Bounsall leaving the company.
The partnership between the two companies extends back to 2008, when RJ purchased a 46% share in McAuslan from Moosehead Breweries. With this new transaction, RJ is purchasing all remaining shares from majority shareholders McAuslan and Bounsall, adding McAuslan to a portfolio that also includes Belle Gueule, Le Cheval Blanc and other brands.
In a statement, Peter McAuslan says on behalf of Bounsall and himself that the sale is “a bittersweet moment for us both. We were pioneers in the craft brewing business in North America. We set out to make interesting beers for consumers, and change the world of brewing. We have achieved both of these goals.”
In a simultaneous statement from RJ, the new parent company indicates that the deal “will not in any way change the way the two entities operate. What’s more, they will both continue to function in an independent manner, and their respective beers will still maintain their unique brand identities. The facilities and employees of

USA, OH: Fifty West Brewing to expand
|
Fifty West Brewing Co. in Columbia Township plans to double its beer brewing capacity to support demand after opening nearly five months ago, cincinnati.com reported on April, 24.
Bobby Slattery, one of the three partners in the business, said the company is in the process of ordering tanks and expects the equipment to be installed and the larger capacity to be in place by late summer.
Slattery estimated the brewery’s production capacity could rise to about 1,000 barrels a year from its current level, which is about 500 barrels a year. He said it’s a good situation to be in to have people supporting the products.
“It’s not an issue of being able to find people that like your beer, it’s about being able to make enough beer to keep up with demand,” Slattery said.
Blake Horsburgh and Whit Hesser are Slattery’s partners in the brewery.
The establishment opened on November, 27.
Initially, the brewery had as many as 46 outside distribution accounts, but eventually demand outpaced the production capacity and the partners decided to end shipments to external customers, Slattery said.
With the expansion, he said the brewery could resume limited self-distribution to bars.

USA, IN: Upland Brewing Company opens Carmel Tap House
|
Upland Brewing Company announced the grand opening of its Carmel Tap House on April, 27.
Similar to the original Bloomington Brewpub, the Tap House features a full line-up of Upland’s craft beers.
“With each location we stumble into, we just tap some kegs and hope for the best,” said Upland President Doug Dayhoff. “If all goes well, the Tap House will convert more people on the north side to drinking high quality craft beers from local brewers, versus light beers from big corporations.”
Upland brews over thirty ales, lagers, and sour beers that are distributed throughout Indiana and in parts of Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
Other Upland locations include the Indy Tasting Room, the Bloomington Brewpub and the Bloomington Brewery and Tasting Room.
Upland Brewing Company, Inc. is a Bloomington, Indiana-based brewery established in 1998 that specializes in handcrafted ales and lagers.

Known for its flavorful and hop-centric ales, Stone will distribute its bold beers throughout the Isle of Enchantment via Craft Beer Distributors Puerto Rico. “After taking a recent trip to Puerto Rico, I found interest in craft beer was far greater than what I expected,” said Stone Senior Vice President of Sales Arlan Arnsten. “Retailers, restaurants and bars are devoting space to craft beer, and people are eager to taste and learn more about these special brews. We had been interested in entering the Puerto Rico market for some time but needed a distributor that understood the importance of promoting artisanal craft beer. We selected Craft Beer Distributors Puerto Rico because they are passionate and diligent about spreading awareness for craft beer throughout the island. USA, TX: Martin House Brewery to release “breakfast beer”
|
The folks behind Fort Worth's newest craft brewery, Martin House Brewing Company, are aware that describing their new grain ale as a "breakfast beer" might cause a stir. But, that's a risk they've weighed against confidence that their small but steadily growing audience will appreciate the tongue-in-cheek labelling, Pegasus News reported on April, 24.
During a special tasting, Martin House poured pints of the yet-unreleased light ale, Daybreak, and while most likely won't wash down their Post Toasties with the so-called breakfast ale, many who tried the brewery's newest offering did note its appropriateness for a hot summer afternoon.
Also joining the line-up is a new saison called River House, another pale, easy-drinking session beer. Both are ready for release on Saturday, April, 27. They join the brewery's extremely memorable, heavy-hitting red ale, the Imperial Texan.
Emphasizing light, summery ales, the brewery is also on the cusp of releasing its first stout, an original recipe created from sourdough pretzels.
"I just put two and two together," brewer Cody Martin said. "Pretzels are made from barley and they have the salty flavor that mixes so well with a sweet beer. We already have people who have tasted it and keep asking for more."

USA, CA: Coachella Valley Brewing Company to launch Big Cat Brew
|
The new brewery on the block, Coachella Valley Brewing Company, has teamed up with The Living Desert and will unveil an ale that has a taste as bold as the desert itself, mydesert.com reported on April, 24.
Big Cat Brew is a saison ale brimming with spices, from rosemary to white sage.
The beer will be revealed at The Living Desert’s annual Brew at the Zoo on May, 4.
“We’re trying to create something that has a lot of local background and local character,” said David Humphrey, the brewery’s CEO.
“It’s going to drum up a lot of support for local gardening and local produce if somebody is walking through The Living Desert, drinking a beer, and saying, ‘That was made from that plant right there.’ ”
Brewmaster Chris Anderson paired up with the zoo’s curator of gardens, Kirk Anderson, to utilize the spices grown around the park.
Chris Anderson, who is also the brewery’s chief operating officer, wasn’t sure what spices he was in pursuit for, but after traipsing the grounds for over an hour, he settled on rosemary and white sage.
“I’m not a big guy on muddling,” said Chris Anderson. “One thing I’m a big stickler on, and I always have been, is I

Kazakhstan: Barley area may be 1.6 mln ha this year
|
Kazakhstan's farmers have planted about 300,000 hectares (741,300 acres) of wheat so far and may sow a total 13 million hectares of the grain, farm adviser Agritel forecast earlier this week.
Spring planting in the country, which accounts for more than 95 percent of crop area, is just starting, the Paris-based company wrote on its website. Kazakhstan's barley area may be 1.6 million hectares, Agritel predicted.
The country harvested 12.4 million hectares of wheat and 1.6 million hectares of barley last year, with production of 9.84 million tons and 1.5 million tons respectively after drought hurt yields, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show.
In Kazakhstan's three main grain-growing regions of the country, soil-water reserves are improved compared to last year, Agritel said.

UK: Carlsberg to reduce Tuborg’s alcohol volume
|
Carlsberg is looking to bolster the premium positioning of its Tuborg brand in the UK as it cuts the alcohol volume of the drink, Marketing Week reported on April, 5.
The brewer is developing a marketing campaign to convince drinkers the lowering of the abv from 4.6 per cent to 4 per cent will not compromise the taste.
It aims to make the beer brand more “accessible” to younger drinkers, the Danish brewer says, in response to research it conducted which revealed they want a lower-strength premium word beer.
Carlsberg uses music tie-ups and digital marketing to promote Tuborg’s aspirational positioning to younger drinkers, however by cutting the beer’s alcohol volume it hopes to broaden the beer’s appeal among men and women. The move will see the brand go head-to-head with world beers such as Molson Coor’s Corona, which has developed a strong following among casual drinkers through its premium positioning despite being a lower strength beer.
The strategy has been echoed by rival brewers in the past including AB Inbev’s Stella Artois and Diageo’s Guinness as the industry looks to claw back drinkers who have moved to cheaper ciders and rival lower ABV alternatives.
A spokeswoman for Carlsberg says: “We pride ourselves on responding

|
Murree Brewery, Pakistan’s most prominent manufacturer of alcoholic products, has announced its earnings results for the quarter ended March 31, 2013 (3QFY13) and the nine months of the ongoing fiscal year (9MFY13), The Express Tribune reported on April, 25.
The company recorded a profit of Rs175.94 million for the quarter, up an impressive 18% year-on-year (YoY). Its 9MFY13 profit, meanwhile, has registered a staggering 63% increase over the same period of the preceding year. The company has decided not to pay out any dividends with the result.
