Identification and Quantification of the Oxidation Products Derived from Alpha-Acids and Beta-Acids During Storage of Hops (Humulus lupulus L.)
ABSTRACT
We have a general idea about what is happening during hops storage in terms of degredation of bitter acids. But until now, it was not clear what the exact degredation products were and how these can be analysed. This Japanese research
team extensively investigated the reaction patterns during hop storage at different
temperatures and came to the following conclusion: The temperature for storage affects the oxidative reaction speed, but does not change the composition of generated hydrophilic oxidation products (humulinones, 4-hydroxyallohumulinones,
and hulupones). At 60 C, the observed compositional change curves resembled those at 40 C, while the reaction speed was about 10 times faster. Also the HPLC conditions to analyse these products are described. However, sensory experiments are needed to show what these findings mean in regard to beer quality.

USA: Attorney general to investigate into Coors Light sponsorship of Puerto Rican Day Parade after beer can scandal
|
After Silver Bullet marked with Puerto Rican Day Parade logo caused a stir, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman wants to know how the parade's primary sponsor has supported the positive work of the parade — aside from marketing the Coors Light brand, New York Daily News reported on May, 30.
The state attorney general’s office is investigating a beer behemoth and the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in the wake of a scandal over cans displaying the Puerto Rican flag.
Coors Light tried to can the controversy on May, 30, vowing to stop production on its Puerto Rican-themed can after outcries from a local community group.
But the state’s top lawman, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, wants to know more about how the beer brand using the popular parade to market its suds.
Schneiderman’s office sent letters to MillerCoors and the Parade leadership on May, 29 and May, 30 demanding to know how exactly the beer company has supported good works by the parade.
“MillerCoors’ sponsorship of the 2013 Parade has raised concerns about how the charity is being used to market and sell alcoholic products, especially in light of the 2013 Parade’s theme, ‘Celebrating Your Health.’” the AG’s office wrote to MillerCoors.

USA, NC: Foothills Brewing releases Batch 69
|
Foothills Brewing has developed a new beer, Batch 69, to be released by the end of the week, journalnow.com reported on May, 28.
Winston-Salem-based Foothills and Wicked Weed contain elements of the recipe for a prominent beer for each brewpub - Sexual Chocolate Imperial Stout for Foothills and Freak for Wicked Weed.
The brewpubs said the name comes from it being the 69th batch of beer brewed at Wicked Weed since they opened in December.
Foothills announced in April that it is expanding the Southeast reach of its craft beers through a major production expansion - buying four 200-barrel fermentation vessels.
The company said the expansion eventually will increase its production by 72 percent, or from 13,000 barrels a year to 40,000, as well as allow it to use its existing 100-barrel vessels for new flavour development.

USA, AK: Alaskan Brewing Co. announces the return of Alaskan Raspberry Wheat
|
The Alaskan Brewing Co. announced the return of the eagerly anticipated Alaskan Raspberry Wheat Ale, scheduled for release May 31, beerpulse.com reported on May, 28.
Raspberry Wheat was first unveiled in 2010 as the inaugural brew in Alaskan’s Pilot Series. It proved to be very popular, particularly in its home town of Juneau, and the brewery has released it in early summer every year since.
The 2012 release of the beer saw a record turn-out of fans, and the Brewery’s Gift Shop sold out of the entire initial bottling in under an hour. This year, Alaskan has increased the inventory and the release of the Raspberry Wheat will be celebrated with a pancake feed featuring raspberry syrup and special flapjacks prepared by the Brew Crew to serve to the expectant crowds.
Alaskan Raspberry Wheat was awarded the 2012 Northwest Brewing News Readers’ Choice Award for best fruit beer, and is a member of Alaskan’s growing list of rotating specialty recipes released in the brewery’s limited-edition Pilot Series. Pilot Series beers represent the creativity of the Alaskan Brew Crew.
“Each new recipe is first created on our one-barrel experimental brew system, perfected in our ten-barrel pilot brew house, then put to the test through

|
Strangeways Brewing unveiled its 8,400-square-foot brewery, by pouring its first beer on May, 29, richmondbizsense.com reported on May, 30.
Founder Neil Burton said the brewery has been about four years in the making.
“When something has been in the works that long, you can kind of keep your emotions in check,” Burton said. “But we’re excited to finally have the doors open.”
The brewery, which includes two tasting rooms, will operate from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 2 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays. For now, Strangeways has two flagship beers on tap: Albino Monkey White Ale, and Woodbooger.
Burton said Strangeways will release a new brew within the next two weeks and a fourth one within the next month.
Burton said he plans to work with Old Dominion Mobile Canning, a startup portable canning operation, to get Strangeways in cans and on the shelves of more local retailers.
The brewery will eventually have an in-house bottling operation that will be able to churn out 22-ounce bottles, he said.
“Handling the packaging is almost like running another business,” Burton said. “That will be a few months down the line. Right now, we’re concentrating on drafts.”
Burton said Strangeways has two brewers, Mike

USA, DE: Old Dominion Brewing and Dawson’s Liquors collaborate to release the Monk Czech
|
Dominion Brewing and Dawson’s Liquors are collaborating on Monk Czech, a Czech Pilsner inspired Belgian-style Ale, set to release June 1, brewbond.com reported on May, 30.
Walter Trifari, head brewer of Fordham & Dominion, described the process of creating Monk Czech, “Brewing with the team from Dawson’s was a real treat. Not only do they have a great outlet for beer, but they all know so much about styles and flavor. Once we brainstormed some ideas about what they were looking for, we could almost taste the final result. Monk Czech will be a mainstay for everybody’s back porch barbeque parties!”
Danny Cipriano, Beer Manager of Dawson’s Liquors said, “When Dominion approached us to create this beer, we couldn’t have been happier. Walter and his brewing staff were incredible to work with. It’s a fantastic experience when people on both sides of the industry get together to share their knowledge and make something special.”
Monk Czech will be available in 22oz bombers and on draft in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

USA, CO: Upslope Brewing enters the lucrative bomber market
|
As a brewery that exclusively packages in cans, Upslope Brewing has been shut out of the lucrative bomber market, therefore, they made a new entry, denverpost.com reported on May, 28.
The Boulder brewery’s more out-there or higher-alcohol beers – the kind many other craft breweries sell in 22-ounce bottles – have always been confined to the taproom.
Enter the 19.2 ounce can as Upslope co-owner Matt Cutter describes the new single-serve container for an imperial IPA about to be released as the brewery’s fifth year-round beer.
“It’s going to be our entry into the bomber door, where we have always wanted to be,” Cutter said. “We feel this is a great way for us to open those single-serve doors and offer something we don’t have plans to put into a six-pack.”
Cutter said Upslope had talked about packaging a double IPA, which it has brewed before. The timing was right as cans from Ball Corp. became available, Upslope’s new second, larger Boulder brewery got humming and the original brewhouse on Lee Hill Road was able to handle production of the new beer, he said.
Cutter said the Upslope Imperial IPA should retail at $6.99 and will be released in Colorado stores on Monday.

USA, CA: Bitter Root Brewery increases its beer production
|
The Bitter Root Brewery is expanding production as it nears its 15th anniversary of craft beer making, ravallirepublic.com, reported on May, 30.
In March, the brewery began construction to add nearly 2,000 square feet of space, extra room that will eventually allow production of 8,000 barrels of beer.
Nicol Musburger, co owner said, “We hit max capacity last year.”
Musburger’s father and brewery owner Tim Bozik said a large part of the expansion is the production of cans.
Beginning in July, the brewery will have retail 12-ounce cans on the market for its Sawtooth Ale, Nut Brown Ale and Single Hop Ale.
Bozik said after the expansion they will stage increases of 1,000 barrels until they hit their max of 8,000 barrels.

USA, CA: Knee Deep Brewing Co. plans to expand
|
Knee Deep Brewing Co. received approval from the city of Auburn last month to expand operations to a new facility there this summer, beerpulse.com reported on May, 28.
The new brewery will measure 16,000 square feet and house a 40-barrel brew house along with indoor and outdoor tasting areas. Founder, Jeremy Warren, pegged the investment at $1 mln.
While the currently-leased Lincoln facility will operate through the summer, Knee Deep hopes to migrate completely to Auburn by year’s end. Warren didn’t comment on the fate of the existing brew house.
Knee Deep produced 1,800 barrels in 2012, reaching $1 mln in sales. The company projects to at least double that this year and has budgeted in 9,000 barrels for 2014.
Beers can be found in California, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Ohio and Vermont but that will change with the expansion.
“Expansion targets include Washington, Oregon, New York, Florida, Texas and most of the North-eastern states,” said Warren. “We have also had preliminary discussions with distributors in western Canada.”
The first Auburn batch is slated to be brewed in July.

Canada, BC: The beer market grows due to imports
|
Imports of beer helps grow the beer market in British Columbia, vancouversun.com reported on May, 29.
Beer importer Guy McClelland says the U.S. is far ahead of Canada’s craft-brewing industry.
Craft brewers in some parts of the United States have a 10- to 20-year head start on B.C.’s artisanal beer industry.
Belgium’s head start is more like 500 years, so it will be harder to catch them. While Canadians wait, we can enjoy a few brews from abroad and dream of a better future.
“When you compare the state of the Canadian craft-brewing industry with the U.S., the U.S. is far ahead,” said beer importer Guy McClelland, one of a handful of Canadians knighted by the Confederation of Belgian Brewers for his work promoting Belgian beers. “Belgium is centuries ahead of both.”
Washington, Oregon and Northern California have a slightly more developed craft-brewing culture than B.C., with craft beer market share tipping 40 per cent in Oregon compared with about 20 per cent in B.C.
The Pacific Northwest has even spawned its own distinct take on classic styles, such as Northwest IPA, American Brown Ale and Cascadian Dark Ale.
“There’s no point in coming into B.C. with styles that are common and go into competition with the
