  • 2. Brewery News

The world’s second largest brewer, SABMiller Plc (“SABMiller”), announced on June 5 the closing of its transaction with Italian brewer Birra Peroni SpA (“Birra Peroni”). SABMiller has acquired a 60% stake in Birra Peroni for EUR 246 million and has entered into put and call arrangements with shareholders who have not sold their stake initially which, when fully exercised, will result in SABMiller increasing its shareholding in Birra Peroni to 97.8%. Birra Peroni holds a strong number two position (25.2% share) in the growing Italian beer market, with 2002 revenues of EUR 494 million and adjusted EBITDA of EUR 44.8 million. Its brands include Peroni, the number one beer in Italy, and Nastro Azzurro, the number three brand in the premium segment.

Belgian brewing giant Interbrew SA's expansion plans in Cuba are on track at 1.5 million hl (39.63 million U.S. gallons) a year, with plans to double output in the future, the head of the company's local operations told the official media on June 5. Interbrew, the world's No. 3 brewer, and the government have a 50/50% partnership in Cerveceria Bucanero SA (CBSA), which operates a brewery in eastern Cuba. CBSA Director Gerry Burk said recent investments had increased capacity at the plant to 1.5 million hl per year, from 600 thousand hl (15.85 million U.S. gallons) this time in 2002. Burk said planning continued to build another 1.5 million hectoliters brewery near the Caribbean island's capital, Havana. Burk said $30 million had been invested in the venture since it was formed in 1993, with plans to invest another $100 million over the next 15 years, according to Reuters...more info

Baltika Brewery, the Russian brewing force, part of Baltic Beverage Holding (BBH), is forecasting an increase in sales by 12-15% for 2003 versus 2002. That was the announcement made by Alexander Nikonov, company’s financial director. According to him the growth would be achieved through the restructuring of the company's sales network. Nikonov stated that the restructuring had already resulted in a 12% increase in sales in May 2003 compared with May 2002. Moreover the company is to reduce the production costs. According to Nikonov, following that initiative it was possible to save USD 5 million in 2002. In 2002 Baltika sold 16.29 million hl of its production. Export volume accounted 6% of all sales volumes. According to Nikonov the company’s share on the Russian market might grow by 6% in 2003 versus 2002 when the company held 22% of Russian market. Now the production capacity of Baltika’s plants in St. Petersburg is 9.5 million hl per year, in Tula 4.1 million hl, in Rostov-on-Don 3 million hl per annum.

    3. Malt News

Anadolu Efes, the Turkish brewer and malt producer, has reported consolidated turnover for 2002 of EUR 420.3 million, up 15% from the year before, under a filing with the Istanbul Stock Exchange (IMKB). The company’s domestic sales has risen by 8% year-on-year to EUR 255 million, while beer exports had increased by 38% to EUR 136 million, Anadolu Efes said.

The Czech malting plant in Kromeriz started production in June 1997 as Moravska sladovna Kromeriz, Joint Stock Company. From June 2001 the malt plant is a member of the SOUFFLET GROUP. From the technological point of view it is the most modern malting plant in the Czech Republic. Its completion represented an important step in the modernization of the Czech malting industry. When selecting the technology, priority was given to a tower malting plant and for the supply of technological equipment, the German company Seeger was opted for. The volume of one production batch is 300 tons of barley and total annual capacity is approx. 75 000 tons of malt. The entire technological process, including operations with barley and finished malt, is automatically controlled by a computer center.

    4. Barley News

U.S. acreage for barley estimated by May 12 is 2.194 million ha versus 2.06 million last year. USA barley production reached the value of 6.531 million tons in comparison with 4.942 million tons last year. Planting is virtually finished. Moisture conditions are good.

Brazil and Uruguay purchased about 100 thousand tons of EU malting barley last month. However, the shortfall of quality barley of crop 2002 was exceptionally large.
