Advances in hop aroma research - how much do we know today, oral lecture at EBC
2013 Luxembourg
ABSTRACT
Though we have a basic understanding about which components can be attributable to floral, citrus, fruity, spicy, herbal and woody flavours, the very unique aromas of hoppy beers cannot be fully explained. The challenge is to understand aroma interactions, the release of aroma components by yeast, the formation of aroma active thiols and our personal perception of volatiles. So there are enough questions on hop aroma to look well into in the future.

USA: Calorie content and nutritional information labelling for beer and strong alcohol remains optional
|
Wine, beer and spirits manufacturers may soon have to disclose calorie content and other nutritional information on bottles and cans. But for now, such labeling remains optional, ABC News reported on June, 5.
The U.S. Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which is part of the Treasury Department, proposed a labeling rule in 2007 that would require alcoholic beverage manufacturers to include calories, carbohydrates, fat and protein content on their labels, but it has yet to make a decision on whether to implement the rule. It announced last week that manufacturers could add this information if they wanted to.
"What's interesting to me is that the reason why beverage companies want it and consumers want it is totally different," said Sara Bleich, a health policy professor at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "It's an example of two groups having different goals while having a sweet spot that seems to work for both."
Low-calorie beer manufacturers are hoping the labels will target people trying to lose weight, believing that's a way to boost sales, she said, adding that studies find that middle-income white women were most likely to pay attention to the labels.
And consumers want more information to make educated choices.

USA, CA: Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. opened on June, 5 in Santa Barbara
|
Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. opened on June, 5 with a tasting room, located at 137 Anacapa Street in the Funk Zone of Santa Barbara, being the second brick-and-mortar spot for the brewery, independent.com reported on June, 4.
Over the course of the holiday weekend, Fig hosted a series of semi-soft openings for its new home turf. (The official grand opening took place this past Sunday, June 2.)
For many, Figueroa’s unveiling has been a long time coming (initial rumours had doors opening back in January), but those who turned out for Monday’s happy hour didn’t seem to mind much. In addition to a regular, eight-beer tasting menu, the new tasting room offers an impressive 32 taps, including rotating specials like the smoky, chocolaty Rusty Bagpipe ale.

USA, MI: Big Lake Brewing opens in Holland Township on July, 5
|
Big Lake Brewing owners: Nic Winsemius, Greg Mackeller, Travis Prueter prepare for the big opening of their brewery on July, 5 in Holland Township, mlive.com reported on June, 5.
Big Lake Brewing is a partnership between a trio of Lakeshore engineers who have pooled their savings and invested sweat equity in the new microbrewery/winery project since forming a partnership four years ago.
“We want to create a fun place where people can come and enjoy a good beer,” said Nicholas Winsemius, an engineer for the Grand Haven Board of Light and Power.
Winsemius and partners Gregory MacKeller and Travis Prueter, both engineers for Gentex Corp., have spent the past month stocking beer for the July opening since getting their final liquor license approval by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
The trio signed a lease with landlord Sundowner last August, but have been delayed about 8 months due to complications with licensing a brewery in the plaza where they located, which housed an event space with a retail liquor license.
Big Lake Brewing sought a manufacturing license that would allow for beer distribution, but was initially denied by state regulators due to the retail license already in use at the commercial plaza, said Winsemius.

USA, MI: MittenBrew.com collaborates with Saugatuck Brewing Co. to release seven different types of crafted beer
|
MittenBrew.com, a leading source of news on the craft beer industry in Michigan, has teamed up with Saugatuck Brewing Company to release its own craft beer, hollandsentinel.com reported on June, 5.
The specialty brew is called “MittenBrew Nutter Berry Wheat” and is set to be released June 15 at Logan’s Alley in Grand Rapids.
It’ll also be available at bars throughout the state, including The Mitten Bar in Ludington and Derby Station and Graydon’s Crossing in Grand Rapids.
“It has always been our goal to produce a beer with a brewery that represents this great craft beer state,” MittenBrew co-founder Bryan Esler said in a news release.
The site plans release a different branded beer from a different craft brewery every year.

USA, MI: Founders Brewing Co launches Mango Magnifico
|
Founders Brewing Co. will introduce Mango Magnifico con Calor [Magnificent Mango with Heat], this August to mark the seventh instalment in the brewery’s popular Backstage Series, brewbound.com reported on June, 5.
Like all Founders Backstage Series beers, Mango Magnifico will be sold in 750mL bottles. It has a suggested retail price of $12.99 per bottle.
“Mango Magnifico, like the entire Backstage Series, is intended to push the boundaries of what is commonly accepted in beer styles,” said Co-Founder and Vice President of Brand & Education Dave Engbers. “The Backstage Series is the perfect conduit to showcase our brewing team’s creativity.”
Founders has had success with their interpretation of fruit beers, including the likes of Cerise, Rubaeus and Blushing Monk. But Mango Magnifico is one-of-a-kind.
Founders’ Backstage Series is made up of boundary-pushing, experimental beers. The intent of the series is to take the diehard Founders fan experience to a wider audience—though all of the beers are still released in limited batches.
Since its introduction in the summer of 2011, Founders’ Backstage Series beers have quickly become some of the most sought-after releases in the industry.
Mango Magnifico will be released in limited quantities across Founders’ distribution footprint beginning on Monday, August 5, and will

USA, OH: Weasel Boy Brewing Co. to release four new beers
|
Weasel Boy Brewing Co. will release in Zanesville three hop-oriented beers and a summer fruit beer in June, ohio.com reported on June, 5.
War Dance Wheat IPA will be available at the brewpub and in the Columbus market starting next week.
The brewery also will release Weasel Meets Dog English-style IPA, Wiley Wolverine Rye Pale Ale and Weasel Paw Pawpaw Pale Ale in time for Ohio Brew Week, which runs from June 21 to 29.
Given the number of high-alcohol of hop beers available, Jay Wince, the brewer, said he wanted to provide a few lower alcohol alternatives. "To me, it's all about achieving balance of character between the ingredients," he said. "I like to be hit with a big flavor blast as well as anyone but when drinking a few over the course of an evening with friends, it's nice to have some modest ABV beers to fall back on."

USA, CA: Anchor Brewing expands the distribution of California Lager
|
Anchor Brewing announces that Anchor California Lager®, California’s first genuine lager reborn, will be available in select US markets. Anchor California Lager was their first beer in the Zymaster® Series, originally released as a limited draught beer in early 2012, brewbound.com reported on June, 5.
“Our first release of this historical brew was immensely popular with the public and also with our Anchor employees,” said Keith Greggor, CEO of Anchor Brewing Company. “From day one, Anchor California Lager resonated with us not only because of its distinctive flavour, but also because of the rich brewing history that it celebrates.”
In February 2013, Anchor California Lager was bottled for distribution in California only. “Anchor California Lager has been selling beyond our expectations since its launch,” said Keith Greggor, CEO of Anchor Brewing Company. “We are very excited to offer it in several more markets so that beer-lovers can enjoy this uniquely Californian creation.”
Anchor California Lager is now available year-round in 6-packs, 12-packs, 22-ounce bottles, as well as on draught at select bars, restaurants, and retailers.
From June through September 2013, Anchor California Lager will begin its distribution in the following US markets: Nevada, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina,

USA, OH: Granville Brewing to launch draft beers
|
Since opening earlier this year, the Granville Brewing Co. has focused on bottling its three Belgian-style beers. But the small nanobrewery — operating out of a former horse barn on co-owner and brewer Ross Kirk’s property in Granville — will release some beer on draft soon as it participates in local beer festivals and starts to raise its profile in central Ohio, ohio.com reported on June, 5.
"We’ve been very quiet about our opening as a whole," Kirk said. So far, marketing has been limited to word-of-mouth.
Now it’s time to start kegging and "see how it goes from there," he said. "My business partner calls it our get rich super, super slow plan."
Ironically, Kirk never bottled as a homebrewer. He eschewed the time-consuming task of cleaning individual bottles and the bottling process, and opted right off the bat to keg his homebrew.
Granville Brewing launched with 22-ounce bottles and no draft. So it’s no surprise that Kirk’s least favourite part of being a professional brewer is bottling, which Granville does by hand.
"There’s a big difference between homebrewing and having to brew," said Kirk, who works full time as a highway construction estimator. "I love it. I’ve never referred to it as

USA, UT: Uinta Brewing Co starts collaboration to release Cahoots Double Rye IPA
|
Salt Lake City’s Uinta Brewing Co. collaborated with local homebrewer Chris Detrick to introduce Cahoots Double Rye IPA, shankennewsdaily.com reported on June, 5.
Uinta only produced 120 barrels of the new beer, which is supposed to hit shelves early this month.
Double Rye IPA is the first release under the Cahoots line, a brand that was recently developed to create annual limited release collaboration beers that rotate in style. And in keeping with Uinta’s tradition of supporting local art for its Crooked line, Double Rye IPA’s label was made by artist Andy Chase.
Uinta’s line-up of brews is currently distributed in 24 states across the country.

USA, VA: Bog Iron Brewing looks for a pouring license in Norton
|
Bog Iron Brewing, located in Norton, a small nanobrewery that is run by friends who have been brewing for 20 years as a hobby, is seeking a pouring license to offer samples of beer, wickedlocal.com reported on June, 5.
Co-founder Brian Shurtleff Shurtleff was at the May 30 selectmen’s meeting seeking a pouring license to offer samples to customers but the hearing was continued because abutters had to be notified by certified letters, something Shurtleff said he was not aware of.
“It’s the first pourers’ license we’ve ever had in town,” selectmen Chairman Robert Kimball said.
Shurtleff said the company brews 4-6 times a month making the equivalent of 50 gallons of beer in the 399 square foot location.
“We want to start out as small as possible. If you do the math it’s not a lot of beer,” Shurtleff said.
They offer four different beers and while they cannot sell to the retail market the company currently has two accounts, Trinity in Norton with two beers on tap full-time and Kinsale in Boston that has a dedicated tap to Bog Iron.
“We’re able to sell bottles on demand at the brewery. We’re open a couple hours Saturday afternoons. That and the two accounts

Canada, ON: Beau’s All Natural Brewing releases another edition of Best of Beau
|
After a successful inaugural edition last year, Beau’s All Natural Brewing has announced they will once again be releasing a limited edition Best of Beau’s mixed pack to LCBO stores for the winter holiday season, and fans of the brewery are being given the opportunity to help pick the brews that will be featured in the package, canadianbeernews.com reported on June, 4.
From now until June 30th, Beau’s drinkers can vote online or in person at the brewery store to choose their favourite from the beers Beau’s has brewed since it was founded several years ago.
Several collaborative and aged beers that can’t be recreated are not on the list, nor is the brewery’s lone year-round brand Lug Tread Lagered Ale. But otherwise, voters can select from almost every seasonal, one-off and limited edition beer that Beau’s has created over the years, and the top 4 will be brewed again for this special release.
The winning beers will be announced in early July, and the Best of Beau’s mixed 4-pack featuring 600 ml bottles of the winners will be in stores in the winter, with an expected retail price of C $24.

World: AB InBev adopts new series of aggressive five-year environmental goals
|
The world's biggest beer brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev has adopted an aggressive series of five-year environmental goals, calling for further reductions in water and energy consumption and setting its first formal targets for packaging reductions and eco-friendly coolers, GreenBiz.com reported on June, 5.
The seven new commitments come just four months after AB InBev revealed it had surpassed previous three-year commitments for water, energy and waste.
The Belgian-based brewer already has saved enough water to produce about 25 billion cans of AB InBev beverages. Currently, it uses an average of 3.5 hectolitres of water for every hectolitre of production.
Now it is trying to squeeze more from the process: The new five-year goal aims to reach a global average of 3.2 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of production. For those who like to visualize this sort of thing, that works out to the amount of water it would take to fill approximately 5,400 Olympic swimming pools.
The Carterville brewery in Georgia, USA, already has outstripped that goal: It uses just 2.8 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of production.
To move toward that measure in other production facilities, the company is introducing water management measures in each of its key barley growing regions through partnerships with local

World: John Manser to continue as acting Chariman at SABMiller while Graham Mackay is on medical leave of absence
|
British brewer SABMiller Plc's board has granted medical leave of absence to its Chairman, Graham Mackay, for him to focus on his continuing treatment following his brain tumour surgery in April 2013.
For the time being, John Manser, Deputy Chairman, would continue as acting Chairman, SABMiller said earlier this week.
The board would keep the position under review as Mackay's treatment progresses, and an announcement about the future will be made as soon as any definitive decisions are taken, the world’s second-largest brewer said.
Considering John Manser's increased time commitments and responsibilities as acting Chairman, Manser stood down as chairman of the audit committee on June 5, 2013, a year before than originally planned, and retired from the audit and remuneration committees, with Mark Armour succeeding Manser as the audit committee's chairman.

New CEO and Managing Director of Plzensky Prazdroj, Paolo Lanzarotti will assume his new responsibilities officially from 1 August 2013. After almost four years at the helm of Plzenský Prazdroj, Doug Brodman will leave the post on July to join the European Leadership team of SABMiller as Commercial Director for Europe.
Paolo Lanzarotti has been appointed as CEO and Managing Director of Plzenský Prazdroj and will assume his new responsibilities officially from 1 August 2013. He joined SABMiller in 2005 progressing through a series of Commercial and General Management roles in Italy, India and Slovakia.

India: Complaint against SABMiller India rejected by fair trade watchdog
|
Fair trade watchdog Competition Commission of India has rejected a complaint of alleged anti- competitive practices against beer maker SABMiller India, Economic Times reported on June, 5.
Hyderabad-based Official Beverages, a manufacturer of soda and packaged drinking water, had alleged that SABMiller was abusing its dominant positions besides forming a cartel that hurt the business interests of the complainant.
Rejecting the plea of Official Beverages, which had a franchise pact with SABMiller, CCI said the "dispute between the parties was business/commercial dispute regarding implications of the franchisee agreement".
Observing that there is no prima facie evidence for further investigation on the complaint, the regulator in an order dated May 31 said, "No competition issue arises in this case".
Under the franchise agreement with SABMiller, Official Beverages was to manufacture packaged drinking water, sparkling water and packaged soda with the former's trademark.
The pact, signed in March 2009, was valid for three years, but it was terminated in February 2012. Official Beverages has alleged that terms were completely one sided and favoured the beer maker.
After the pact was terminated, the complainant said that SABMiller along with 12 other clearing and forwarding agents withheld the sale consideration. The 12 entities were
