New insights into the delicacy of dry hop aroma
ABSTRACT
We know that a dry hop aroma is a very delicate quality that is easily lost. This presentation provided some answers to why this is happening. One known enemy is of course oxygen, so some flavour active compounds, e.g. monoterpenes, are easily lost due to oxidation. In this context antioxidants are crucial to support the delicate dry hop flavours. Also fruity aromas can be lost due to biotransformation by the yeast. Also if yeast is present, the flavour contribution of glycosides is not clear since both parts of it (sugar part and aglycones) can be metablised. In conclusion, a dry hop aroma derived from a yeast and oxygen free environment may have a greater chance to reach the consumers olfactory system.

USA: Constellation Brands finalizes its acquisition of Grupo Modelo
|
Victor-based Constellation Brands has finalized its acquisition of Grupo Modelo's U.S. beer business, ynn.com reported on June, 7.
The company announced the completed acquisition from Anheuser-Busch InBev for $4.75 bln.
Constellation Brands is now a fully independent beer competitor in the U.S., with rights to import, market and sell the Modelo brands currently sold by Crown Imports. Constellation will operate as one company with a beer division and a separate wine and spirits division.
The acquisition was put on hold early this year when the Department of Justice filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Anheuser-Busch InBev's proposed acquisition of Grupo Modelo, saying it would ultimately drive the cost of beer up.

Budweiser’s ‘international’ brand volume passed the 20mhl threshold in 2012, Plato Logic Limited reported on June, 6.
Only 4 beer brands achieve 10mhl ‘non-domestic’ volume and Budweiser has now overtaken both Corona and Carlsberg in the last 2-3 years. Is Budweiser now closing the gap on Heineken?
A direct comparison between the two brands is arguably difficult as the USA, the Heineken brand’s largest market, is of course Budweiser’s domestic market. Also, Budweiser is mainstream in some international markets and, even where premium, may not command as high a price as Heineken.
Nevertheless, at current rates of growth, Budweiser could pass Heineken to become the leading ‘international’ beer brand by 2017. It is also possible to highlight the contrasting development of the two brands in Q1-2013, even if this may be an unrepresentative quarter.
Although it is also possible to highlight one market, China, as a key driver of Budweiser’s recent growth, this is again significant in that, supported by the recent strong entry into Brazil, it underlines the performance of the brand in emerging markets.
In the emerging beer markets, Budweiser has already closed the gap on Heineken in 2012.

India: Kingfisher Ultra to expand its presence in the super-premium mild beer segment of the Indian market
|
After dominating the strong beer segment with an absolute majority, United Breweries Limited (UBL), which owns the 'Kingfisher' brand of beer, is now actively stepping on the gas to expand its presence in the super-premium mild beer segment which is dominated by global brands such as Carlsberg and Budweiser in India, Business Standard reported on June, 10.
UBL, which had launched 'Kingfisher Ultra' during 2009, has been aggressively growing this franchise and according to UBL joint president Shekhar Ramamurthy, the volumes are increasing rapidly. "The Indian consumer has also changed in his demands and with the increase in disposable incomes, is showing keenness to upgrade in everything he uses. He is ready to pay a premium for the best and demands the best," Ramamurthy added. The super-premium beer segment starts at a price point of Rs 110 a bottle and goes on up to as much as Rs 180 a 650-ml bottle.
With respect to the size of the market segments, the Super Premium Segment comprised of 3.1 per cent of industry volume of 270 mln nine-litre cases and accounts for 4.2 per cent of industry value in 2012. Volumes in this segment grew by 62 per cent in 2012 over 2011.

USA: Craft beer segment growth exceeds volumes
|
Consolidation within the US craft brewing sector is moving closer as the rate of new producers emerging is outpacing segment volumes, Guestmetrics reported on June, 10.
The number of craft brewers operating in the US on-trade rose by 17% last year, while the number of craft brands grew by around 22%, Guestmetrics said. However, craft beer volumes in bars and restaurants only increased by high-single digits during last year and mid-single digits in this year's Q1, the company said.
"While we don’t necessarily see a shake-out in the near term, looking out at the next three-to-five years, the question will be the sustainability of the economics of a lot of the new entrants, given the declining volume per available brand," said Bill Pecoriello, GuestMetrics' CEO.
Out of the 22% expansion in craft brands being sold in the on-trade, around three-quarters is due to more craft brewers existing, Guestmetrics said. Around a quarter of that growth is because of more brands being sold per brewer. This is also "putting pressure on sustainability, particularly for the newer entrants in the segment," the company said.

Belgium: Exports reached 62% of the beer produced in Belgium in 2012
|
Belgium's centuries-old beers are taking the world's tipplers by storm, iafrica.com reported on June, 12.
From red to golden ales and sour cherry froth, lagers to stouts and lambic beers, the fame of Belgian brews has sent exports soaring 70 percent over the last decade, with 62 percent of the beer produced last year now shipped abroad.
"Beer is to Belgium what wine is to France, it gives our small country a real identity," said Sven Gatz, director of the Belgian Brewers' Federation.
And if France famously is the land of 600 cheeses, then Belgium is the land of 1000 beers.
"Sales of Belgian beer are exploding in Japan. After two decades as a niche drink, volumes increased fourfold just in the last two years," Gatz said.
The price of a pint of Belgian brew in a Tokyo pub is likely to be four times as expensive as in Brussels, however. "People order just one or two, as they would a glass of whisky or very good wine."

USA, NC: Lookout Brewing opened in Black Mountain, North Carolina

John Garcia opened Lookout Brewing on May 1, occupying a little shop not far from the centre of Black Mountain, in Buncombe County, citizen-times.com reported on June, 6.
Garcia was a homebrewer, turning out ales for friends and family. They were well-received, he said, and that led to Lookout Brewing, which combines a half-barrel “nano” craft brewery with a shop selling homebrew supplies.
Lookout has nine brews on tap, from First Run golden ale to Dungadoon blond. Many brews are lower-alcohol sessions beers, but others have more alcohol.
As the local craft beer scene continues to grow, it is very likely to see more of this — small operations that serve their community and any thirsty drinker who makes the journey.

USA: Organic hops production tripled in 2012
|
Organic hops used to be a rare crop. So rare, in fact, that the rule makers at the U.S. Department of Agriculture decided in 2007 that organic hops weren’t necessary to make certified organic beer, Yahoo News reported on June, 11.
Now the situation has changed. As of January, every beer ingredient has to be organic to earn a brewer organic certification, and the resulting growth in the organic hops industry is a boon to farmers interested in cultivating this unusual, high-value crop.
Most of today’s craft beer relies on an American-bred variety known as the Cascade hops.
Like the name implies, most Cascade hops are grown in the Pacific Northwest. In fact, Washington’s Yakima Valley has become the heart of hops farming. As recently as 2010, only 100 acres of the 30,000 acres of hops in the valley were grown organically.
But according to The American Organic Hop Grower Association, the total pounds of organic hops produced by their member growers tripled last year, growing from 70,000 pounds in 2011 to 218,000 pounds in 2012. A full 10 percent of the hops grown in the U.S. are now certified organic (around double that of the average crop).
