Fruits from the Hallertau
ABSTRACT
Specifically looking into the brewing properties of the new hop varieties from the Hallertau was the task of A. Forster. Using whirlpool hopping and dry hopping in standardised brewing trials he concluded that the dosing of hops should be based on the oil content for a consistent aroma. Beer brewed with Mandarina Bavaria and Hallertau Melon were preferred over beers with Hallertau Blanc. The latter variety, associated with white wine flavours, polarised the assessors. In terms of bitterness, the quality of bitterness of whirlpool and dry hopped beers was equal.

Africa: SABMiller’s South African Castle Lager launching itself as a regional brand across the rest of the continent
|
Castle Lager, a brand synonymous with SABMiller’s heritage in South Africa, has begun to launch itself as a regional beer product across the rest of Africa, according to John Manser, acting chairman of SABMiller, Ventures Africa reported on June, 25.
Manser, writing in the world second biggest brewer’s latest annual report, said Castle Lager had posted its second year of double-digit growth on the back of strong trade in Africa.
“This demonstrates that even a brand with over 100 years of sales behind it can remain relevant to a new generation of consumers,” Manser said.
Manser said in many of the emerging markets SABMiller had now embarked on the “premiumisation” of the beer class.
This has prompted the company to start local premium beers that trade on “national pride” and present inexpensive luxury to drinkers wanting to trade up.
“At the lower end of the price ladder, particularly in Africa, we have set out to compete with informal alcohol through the development of affordable beers made from locally available ingredients,” Manser said.
“We started with the sorghum-based Eagle Lager in Uganda and subsequently launched two new cassava beers in Mozambique and Ghana.”
These products have opened up new markets for SABMiller. They have also offered fresh income

India: Carlsberg launches fruit flavoured strong Tuborg Booster beer
|
Denmark-based beer giant Carlsberg has launched its first fruit flavoured strong beer in India - Tuborg Booster - to tap youth and female consumers, DNA reported on June, 21.
Subodh Marwah, marketing director, Carlsberg India, said, “We did a lot of surveys and consumers complained that all strong beers taste the same. As a result, we have come up with something completely different.”
Booster is now available in West Bengal and Maharashtra and will be launched in 5-6 more markets by next month. The company also has Carlsberg brand in the premium and super premium category.
The company is looking to cash in on the growing popularity of strong beer, which now forms 85% of the $2 billion beer market, expected to touch 90% in two years, according to Marwah.
Indian consumers are also looking to get more bang for their buck with strong beer.
“Moreover, for some consumers, it acts as a step-up between hard liquor and the beer category. Also, with the presence of international brands, the quality of strong beer being offered has really improved and as a result, more companies are taking to it,” said Marwah.
Carlsberg, which has seven breweries in India in six years of operations,

Mozambique: SABMiller’s Cervejas de Moçambique increases purchases of cassava for brewing
|
A company hired by Mozambican beer maker Cervejas de Moçambique (CdM) is buying large quantities of cassava in the Muanza district of Sofala province, with a view to using it to make beer, the district administrator João Patrício Geral, was quoted as saying by Macauhub on June, 21.
According to Geral, this is not the first time that cassava producers in the district have been contacted to sell cassava for industrial use, and previously CleanStar had the same intention but for ethanol production.
However, CleanStar would only buy dried cassava, and this is not that case for the new buyer, Dutch Agricultural Development & Trading Company (Dadtco), which, as well as this, will provide competition and drive prices higher.
Geral said that Dadtco also planned to encourage cassava production to ensure it can purchase the product from around 2,000 farmers, and has already installed a machine to process the cassava.
CdM, which is a subsidiary of SABMiller Plc, launched Impala, a new brand of beer made from cassava, in November 2011.
Impala is produced at the company’s factory in Nampula using 70 percent cassava and 30 percent barley, and is the result of several years of research to overcome the challenges of processing and producing

Ukraine & Russia: Carlsberg Ukraine starts shipping Lvivske Svitle beer to Russia
|
Carlsberg Ukraine, one of the largest breweries in Ukraine, in June 2013 started supplying Lvivske Svitle beer to Russia, Interfax reported on June, 25.
"Carlsberg Ukraine has started supplies of Lvivske Svitle beer – the most popular brand in Ukraine – to the traditional retail market and supermarkets of Moscow and the central region of Russia," reads the company's report issued on June, 25.
The beer will be sold in PET one- and two-litre bottles.
The company expressed hope that the Lvivske brand's entrance to the Russian market will allow it to strengthen its positions in the exports segment from Ukraine.
Carlsberg Ukraine also said that among beer brands, Lvivske is second on the Ukrainian market with a share of 13.3% at the end of the first quarter of 2013.
The owner of Carlsberg Ukraine is Carlsberg Group, one of the leading brewing groups in the world. Carlsberg three breweries in Ukraine - in Zaporizhia, Kyiv and Lviv.
In Ukraine, the company markets such brands as Slavutych, Lvivske, Tuborg, Baltika, Carlsberg, Holsten, Corona, Arsenal, Khmіlne, Kvass Taras, Negra Modelo, Somersby, Guinness, Kilkenny, Harp and Warsteiner.

Thailand & Myanmar: Chang Beer the most trafficked beer brand from Thailand into Myanmar
|
Beers and inexpensive food products were the most seized among the illegal imports from Thailand into Myanmar through border areas, according to officials from mobile teams operated by Department of Border Trade (DBT) under the Ministry of Commerce.
Two mobile teams have seized Ks 266 lakhs worth of the products within just few days from June 9 to 17 on the route, the team officials were quoted as saying by Eleven Myanmar on June, 24.
Chang Beer, the top-selling brand in Thailand was the most trafficked among the beers seized, they said.
Although Myanmar's Investment Commission have already given permission for legal production of Chang Beer to operate in Yangon, Mandalay and Taung Gyi in January this year, the trafficking of the beer has yet to decline.
Chang Beer was among the most popular items for the trafficking and trafficked in million cans a year, according to the officials.
Chang Beer, which was launched in March 1995 and is brewed at a brewery in Bang Ban district of Ayutthaya Province, is the top-selling brand in Thailand and also a popular beer in Myanmar.

India: Former CEO of Carlsberg India and Foster’s India aiming at making beer as easily available as coffee
|
Pradeep Gidwani, now an entrepreneur and formerly CEO of two leading beer brands, Carlsberg India and Foster's India, wants to make beer as easily available and as widely consumed as coffee in India, Business Today reported on June, 23.
He is founder of The Pint Room, begun in July last year, which already has five outlets - two in Mumbai, one each in Delhi, Panchkula near Chandigarh, and Bangalore - and intends to raise their number to 20 by the end of this year. "We want to be the Starbucks of beer," he says.
Indeed, The Pint Room is his second effort. His first started in December 2010, when he launched The Beer Cafe in partnership with Rahul Singh, former Executive Director (Apparel) at sportswear retailer Reebok India, in Delhi's Vasant Kunj.
"My idea of a beer cafe is one which looks less like a bar or a pub, and more like a coffee shop," says Gidwani. "I want to create a space where conversations can be had over beer, without loud music or dim lights."
He joined hands with Singh because of the latter's wide experience in retail. Today, The Beer Cafe is competition. The partners developed differences and ultimately
