Australia & USA: The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission not to oppose ADM’s acquisition of GrainCorp
|
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission announced on June 27 that it will not oppose Archer Daniels Midland Co.’s (ADM) proposed acquisition of GrainCorp Limited, World-Grain.com reports.
“The ACCC concluded that the proposed acquisition would be unlikely to substantially lessen competition as the merged entity would continue to face competition from a number of sources,” ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said.
In forming its view, the ACCC conducted an extensive public review process which involved consultation with grain growers, industry bodies and competitors about the likely effect of the proposed transaction on competition.
The ACCC’s review looked at two key issues. First, the ACCC examined whether the proposed transaction would substantially lessen competition in any market by removing the existing competition between ADM and GrainCorp. Second, the ACCC examined whether ADM would have different incentives to GrainCorp such that it would be likely to foreclose third party access to the storage and transport supply chain following the merger, which may in turn reduce competition between traders to acquire grain.
Current competition between GrainCorp and ADM is focused mainly on grain trading and marketing in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, where GrainCorp competes with Toepfer (80% owned by ADM) and a number of large market

Canada, ON: Turtle Island Brewing to open in Ottawa
|
Keeping the promise made back in March of a summer launch, the first beer from Turtle Island Brewing debuted this past weekend at an Ottawa bar and bistro, Canadian Beer News reported on July, 2nd.
Owner and brewer J.P. Fournier was on hand at 8 Locks’ Flat Canal Bistro on Sunday, June 30th to reveal Dark Honey Brown, a 7.5% abv ale.
Dark Honey Brown will also be available starting at the Arrow & Loon and Petit Bill’s Bistro, Otawa, with plans to have it on tap in more Ottawa area establishments soon.
A second Turtle Island brand, Smash Cherry Ale, is yet to be released, with both of them being brewed under contract at Broadhead Brewing while Fournier and his fiancée & partner Trish Watson move toward opening a permanent brewpub location.

Canada, NB: Grimross Brewing opens by launching Cheval D’Or Farmhouse Ale
|
After a soft launch last fall with a limited edition collaboration created with Picaroons Traditional Ales, veteran home brewer Stephen Dixon officially launched his Grimross Brewing project this past weekend with the release of his first solo brand, Canadian Beer News reported on July, 2nd.
Cheval D’Or, a Belgian-style farmhouse ale, went on sale on July, 1st in 750 ml swing-top growlers at the Picaroons Brewtique in downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick, the same location where Grimross beers are being brewed.
Three additional brands have been given ANBL approval – Belgian Blonde, Belgian Rye IPA, and the 100% Brettanomyces-fermented Chantelope – and all are planned for future release.
Grimross beers will also be distributed on draught to select licensed establishments in the Fredericton area, with availability details to be announced soon.

Canada & China: Russell Breweries sees huge opportunities for its Chinese JV
|
When Russell Breweries Inc. first sat down with a group of Chinese investors to discuss doing a joint venture in China, it wasn’t the perfect beginning to a business relationship around beer, The Globe and Mail reported on July, 1.
At its brewery in Surrey, B.C., the Russell team brought a sampling of its premium craft beers, while the Chinese passed around their traditional fiery Maotai liquor. The initial reaction on either side was tentative.
But after a few more sips, tastes began to change.
“They weren’t used to our beer, and I certainly wasn’t used to their liquor,” recalled Brian Harris, chief executive officer of Russell. “But pretty soon their liquor tasted pretty good … and they ended up not only liking [Russell beer] but investing in it.”
For Russell, the maker of such brands including Russell Cream Ale, Hop Therapy and Russell IP’eh!, it was symbolic of how to build a relationship, particularly with a foreign investor.
“We were connected, we spent time getting to know each other, then we hammered out a world-class agreement that is fair for all parties,” said Mr. Harris. “I’m sure that’s the formula for even having a chance at these things.”

USA, NC: Unknown Brewing Company to open in September
|
Unknown Brewing Company is planning to open in September in Charlotte, North Carolina, Charlotte Observer reported on July, 2.
“I was stacking cases off a bottling line when I was 21 years old and it was 110 degrees inside the brewery, a case coming off every 2.5 seconds,” Brad Shell, the owner, recalled of his time at Atlanta’s SweetWater Brewing Company.
“But I loved every minute of it, and I vowed to myself that I would own my own brewery by the time I turned 30.”
He fell in love with the 25,000-square-foot building on Mint Street, Charlotte, North Carolina, that was previously home to the South End Field house. With 30-foot ceilings, two water mains and a propane line already installed, the building was well-suited for a brewery. But the real appeal was the location, just three blocks south of Bank of America Stadium.
Charlotte’s planning department helped spearhead a microbrewery text amendment that now allows breweries in additional districts.
“The city helped acknowledge that this was a great time for the breweries,” Shell said. “They put in many hours to find a real solution that helps our local breweries.”

USA, NM: Duel Brewing Company releases Belgium-style beer
|
Duel Brewing is opening in Santa Fe, New Mexico late this month, by launching a new belgium style beer, Santa Fe New Mexican reported on July, 1.
“The concept for Duel came from Trent Edwards one of the founders, wanting to synthesize his artistic skills and management experience into a creative environment fuelled by a great product. After thousands of hours of research and years of planning, Duel will be the only brewery in New Mexico where one can find Belgian style beer year-round,” said the spokeswoman Julie Ruth in a statement about the project.
Trent Edwards is working with Matt Onstott, the general manager, who holds a doctorate in public policy, and Todd Yocham, head of brewery operations.
“Beer tourism is definitely on the rise. Many people plan their trips chasing down high-end craft varieties,” Yocham said.

USA, DE: Kennett Brewing Company prepares for the big opening
|
Kennett Brewing Company plans to open later this year in Greenville, New Castle, Delaware, Union Ville Times reported on July, 1st.
Started by two couples who share a passion for well-crafted beer, the business – whose motto is “Kennett Brewing Company believes that everyone deserves extraordinary beer” – is expected to open in late 2013.
The founders, Chris and Jen Braunstein and Mark and Jocelyn Osborne, have spent years pursuing inventive beers.
“Together we dedicated over 15 years of research, practice and achievement to develop our own beer to the category of extraordinary,” the owners wrote on their website.
Beer – ranging from traditional to unique styles – will be brewed on site and sold with a limited menu that will offer traditional taproom fare, the release said.
“We are really excited to bring some historical English ales and new flavours to Kennett. Everyone from those new to craft beer, to the real hopheads out there has something to get excited about,” said Chris Braunstein.
“Kennett is a second home for us, and we can’t wait to contribute to the historic downtown and the community at large. This is as much Kennett’s brewery and dream, as it is ours.”

Canada, ON: Flying Monkeys collaborates with City and Colour Holding to release City and Colour Imperial Maple Wheat
|
Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery has announced details of a special launch event for the latest in the Treble Clef series of limited edition beers created in collaboration with Canadian musicians, Canadian Beer News reported on July 2nd.
City and Colour Imperial Maple Wheat, developed by Flying Monkeys together with singer-songwriter Dallas Green of City and Colour, will be officially released to retail this Thursday July, 4th with a launch event at the Summerhill LCBO in Toronto, Ontario.
City and Colour Imperial Maple Wheat will be available in a limited run of 750 ml bottles packaged in illustrated gift boxes. It will be available at select LCBO outlets in Ontario, retailed for C$13.95 per bottle, and will also be distributed in Western Canada by 49th Parallel Group.

USA, CO: Wynkoop Brewing launches Colorojo Imperial Red
|
Wynkoop Brewing Company has released Colorojo Imperial Red in hand-labelled cans, Brew Bound reported on July, 1st.
Head brewer Andy Brown developed the beer’s recipe. “I like this style of beer,” Brown says, “because it gives you a firm malt backbone to balance the rather intense hop profile. The elevated alcohol content also helps extract more aromas during the dry hopping process, which we do for up to 3 weeks with this beer.”
First brewed last year as an experimental beer, the beer has steadily become a hit at Wynkoop Brewing and a small number of Denver establishments that featured the beer on draft.
Colorojo is now available in select Denver area stores in four packs of hand-labelled 12-ounce cans. Its suggested retail price is $8.99/four pack.
This is the second beer in Wynkoop’s “Even Smaller Batch” series of seasonal and limited-release canned beers. The first was Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout, which made its debut in cans in March.

USA, OR: Full Sail Brewing Co. releases English Pale

Full Sail Brewing announced on July, 2 the release of the next beer in their new line of classic ales called the Pub Series.
The third beer in the series is the English Pale. This new series features ales that had only previously been available at Full Sail’s Tasting Room & Pub in Hood River, Oregon.
“For as anyone lucky enough to stop for a pint at our Pub in Hood River, Oregon, knows it’s a spectacular place to share a beer with friends. The Full Sail Pub Series captures that experience in a bottle and lets you share it with all your friends. Each selection will be available for only 90 days before the next gets its turn to shine. Granville Island Brewing has announced details of the newest entry in the Black Note Book Series of limited edition small batch beers- Thirsty Farmer Saison, Canadian Beer News reported on July 2nd.
Thirsty Farmer Saison is being released now in a limited run of 650 ml bottles that will be available at the GIB Taproom and select liquor stores in Vancouver and area.

EU: Highest prices for alcohol in the EU registered in Finland
|
Finland has the highest prices for alcohol in the EU, 75% above the average, while Bulgaria has the lowest, according to latest figures.
The Eurostat survey based on 2012 prices, published late last week, found that Ireland has the second highest prices among the 27 member states, 62% above the average, followed by Sweden and the UK. Of non-EU countries, within Europe, Norway pays the most for alcohol, with prices 188% above the continent's average, with Iceland second, then Turkey.
In the UK, the Wine & Spirits Trade Association suggested the duty escalator system was to blame for the country's high prices. "Tax now accounts for 57% of the cost of a bottle of wine and 79% of a bottle of vodka," said chief executive Miles Beale.
Meanwhile, just above Bulgaria as the lowest-priced EU countries were Romania, Hungary and Germany.
Denmark ranked top in the EU for prices on "food and non-alcoholic beverages".

UK: Stella Artois may lose its crown as UK’s leading lager brand
|
Stella Artois could lose its crown as the UK’s leading lager brand to Foster’s in October, if its sales continue to fall at the rate they have over the past year, The Grocer reported on June, 29.
The AB InBev-owned brand’s sales have fallen 4.6% on volumes down 7%. Meanwhile, Foster’s value sales are up 12.2% on volumes up 9%.
If the two continue on the same trajectory, Stella will be worth £487.6 mln in October, while Foster’s will hit £492.2 mln. If Stella’s sales remained at their current level, Foster’s would overtake it in December.
However, AB InBev’s president for the UK and Ireland Inge Plochaet said Stella’s decline, which has cost the brand £24 mln in lost sales over the past year, was an anticipated result of its strategy to drive value back into the category. Over the period, Stella cut its use of featured space deals by 34.6%.
“Our promotional participation was at too high a level,” said Plochaet. “Of course, that comes with consequences such as revenue, market share and volume in the short term, leading to something more sustainable in the long term.”

|
Plzensky Prazdroj has launched a new line for the production of innovative drinks that are growing in popularity on the Czech market - beers mixed with fruit juices, malt-based drinks and wheat beers. The investment, amounting to CZK 143 million, will enhance Prazdroj's ability to respond to changing consumer preferences, 4-traders reported on June, 27.
"The classic Pilsner-style lager will continue to be the core of the Czech beer market. However, the market will also see a growth in popularity of less traditional drinks, such as our existing products Gambrinus Juicy Grapefruit, malt-based Frisco, Birell non-alcoholic beer mixed with fruit juice, and Fénix wheat beer. We want to offer our consumers the drinks already out there in sufficient volumes and in a wide range of packs, but we also want to gain more space for the development of new products and variants," says Plzensky Prazdroj 's Marketing Director, Grant McKenzie.
The new line, located at the Pilsen brewery, has an annual capacity of 600,000 hectolitres and ranks among the most advanced similar facilities in the Czech Republic. The Czech Republic: Radegast introducing citrus-flavoured Summer Stein beer
|
Czech brewer Radegast is introducing a new beer for the summer season, 4-traders reported on June, 28.
Summer Stein will be available in hundreds of pubs around the Moravia-Silesia region. Light tap beer enhanced with the natural aroma of citrus fruits retains its unique bitterness so typical of Radegast beer. This beer category stands apart from mixed beer drinks, so called "radlers," and has no representation in Czech Republic so far.
"I would like to point out that it is not a beer mix, or as we say here, a 'radler,' but an absolutely different beer product," marketing manager of Radegast brand Karel Kraus explained the novelty from Nošovice brew masters.
Radegast Summer Stein is brewed via traditional methods from the same materials as other Radegast beers. During the final phase, this bitter beer is enhanced with the natural aroma of citrus fruits. Radegast Summer Stein has 4% alcohol content.
