The mystery of glycosidically bound hop aroma compounds and their sensory contribution
ABSTRACT
Only a few studies so far have looked into the flavour potential of glycosidcally bound hop aroma compounds in the case of release of aglycones. These US researchers did an extensive study looking into the effect of enzyme hydrolysis, the use of different yeast strains, acid hydrolysis, as well as different sample preparation methods. Depending on the different treatments, the amount of Linalool, Terpineol, Citronellol, Geraniol, Damascenone, Nerol and also Eugenol increased and significantly influenced the sensory attributes of the beers (mainly herbal, tea, citrus, fruity, piney). In conclusion, CO2 extraction proved to be an effective sample preparation, ale yeast liberate more aroma than lager yeasts, enzymatic treatments depend on the relevant compounds, and acid hydrolisis is very effective. USA, CA: Coronado Brewing Co. to increase distribution of its beer
|
San Diego’s Coronado Brewing Co. (CBC) is set to expand distribution in two states, Shanken News Daily reported on July, 10.
The brewer has recently signed a deal with Marine View Beverage to launch its beers in parts of Washington State where it’s not already available, and beginning in August, CBC’s line up of beers will be also available throughout the state of New York for the first time through Manhattan Beer Distributors.
With the addition of the new markets, CBC’s footprint includes 13 states and six countries. They are also in the process of finding additional distribution partners to further expand, with a focus on Colorado and Texas, as well as select markets in states such as Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

|
San Diego-based Green Flash Brewing is entering the Indiana market beginning July 15 through World Class Beer, Shanken News Daily reported on July, 10.
Distribution in the state will begin with 10-15 on-premise draft accounts and about 200 off-premise accounts in the Indianapolis region.
Green Flash also recently aligned its line up of beers with Great Artisan Beverage for distribution across the Pacific Northwest.
Green Flash is also available in Reno, Mississippi, Montana, Northern Louisiana and Wisconsin and is considering launches in Minnesota and Michigan in the fourth quarter of this year.
The brewer of the company produced Citra Session IPA, Imperial Red Rye, Saison Diego Ale, Trippel Ale and Palate Wrecker Hamilton’s Ale, among others.

USA, CO: Elevation Beer Company launches Wild Flowers Imperial Saison and Engel Weisse
|
Elevation Beer Company announced release of its Summer Seasonals in its Black Series and Double Black Series, Beer Pulse reported on July, 10.
Elevation will be releasing its Wild Flowers Imperial Saison and Engel Weisse, a barrel Fermented Berliner Weisse, later this month.
“Brewing Engel Weisse has been a fantastic experience and we are so excited to release this as our first sour beer,” exclaims Head Brewer Christian Koch, “Not only was it fermented in oak barrels, but it is a nice deviation from our high ABV beers, with Engel Weisse coming in at just over 4% ABV, with the classic Berliner effervescence and tartness.”
Both Engel Weisse and Wild Flowers will be released in 750ml cork and caged bottles and both are new additions to Elevation’s Portfolio.

USA, OR: No-Li Brewhouse to enter Portland market, Oregon, USA
|
The award-winning beers from No-Li Brewhouse will soon be distributed in Portland, Oregon, Beer Pulse reported on July,9.
“The bootlegging of our beer across the Columbia River into Rose City stops today!” said No-Li co-founder John Bryant. “We have reached a monthly agreement to ship 22 ounce bottles and a limited number of kegs to Oregon Craft Beer enthusiasts. The trucks crossed the Columbia today - get yours while you can.”
No-Li is fresh from its recent federal approval of ‘Spokane-Style’ beer classification. According to brew master and co-founder Mark Irvin, “‘Spokane-Style’ beer must be brewed and packaged in Spokane and use all ingredients exclusively from the region, as the name suggests. And, of course all No-Li Brewhouse beers are 100% Spokane-Style.”

USA, NJ: Flying Fish Brewing Co. releases Forever Unloved Sandy
|
New Jersey’s largest craft brewery, Flying Fish Brewing Company, has debuted a bottle version of their wildly popular Forever Unloved (F. U.) Sandy, Brew Bound reported on July, 9.
Originally available only on draught, the beer has generated more than $45,000 for New Jersey victims of 2012’s Superstorm Sandy, and a portion of proceeds from the bottles, as well as from branded hats, t-shirts and pint glasses, will also be donated.
“The response to F.U. Sandy was overwhelming, and we’re thrilled to announce this second release to support the continued restoration of our home state,” says founder Gene Muller, who, like much of his brewing team, is a proud resident of New Jersey. “Our first batch of F. U. Sandy was gone in a matter of weeks – so we immediately began working on a second release to satisfy the demand of our fans and expand our efforts to restore the New Jersey coastline.”
F.U. Sandy will be available in 750-oz. bottles, and the instantly recognizable logo will also appear on a line of hats, t-shirts and pint glasses, available online, with a portion of proceeds also donated to storm recovery causes.
Muller and his team hope that this second release of F.U.

USA, GA: Terrapin Beer Co. relaunches Dos Cocoas Chocolate Porter
|
In 2012, Terrapin Beer Co. offered up to their fans the chance to vote for their favourite retired Terrapin beer. After heated campaigning, the votes were tallied and, unlike some previous elections, the winner was clear: Dos Cocoas Chocolate Porter, which will be relaunched soon, Beer Pulse reported on July, 10.
Dos Cocoas, was originally released in 2008 as Side Project Vol. 4. To promote the regional economy, cocoa nibs and shells were shipped in from Nashville, TN chocolate maker Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co. Then Terrapin’s brewers were put to work creating a complex porter that will gain approval points across party lines. Dos Cocoas’ perfect mix of sweet, velvety chocolate and mellow roastiness provides the checks and balances needed to provide a quick stimulus to taste buds throughout the Southeast and East Coast.
Dos Cocoas will be packaged in 22 oz. bottles and available starting in mid-July within Terrapin’s ten-state distribution network.

Canada, ON: Beau’s All-Natural Brewing revives Opa’s Gose
|
Beau’s All-Natural Brewing has announced the return of a beer that was previously brewed especially for one of their famous Oktoberfest events, and which will now be more widely available, Canadian Beer News reported on July 10.
Opa’s Gose was likely the first modern version of the historic gose to be commercially brewed in Ontario when it was first released in 2010. It’s returning now in a much larger batch.
Opa’s Gose is a revival of an ancient beer style that originated in and around the Saxon capital of Leipzig, Germany. The Gose style takes its name from a river that flows through the town of Goslar, in Lower Saxony.
Each bottle of Opa’s Gose will come with a small sachet of sea salt which can be added to the beer if desired to “further define and enhance each flavour, allowing consumers to customize their beer, while creating a lively effect as the salt releases carbonation in their glass.”
Opa’s Gose is available since Thursday, July 11th at the Beau’s retail store and BYBO delivery service. It will also be available at select LCBO outlets throughout Ontario, selling for C$7.85 per 600 ml bottle.

•Operating hours must fall between 9:00 AM and 11:00 PM.
•The bar/lounge area cannot exceed 80 square metres (850 square feet), and must occupy no more than 1/3 of the area of the brewery or distillery.

UK: Barley exports in April higher than in March, malt exports the highest since September 2012
|
The UK’s barley exports in April were 19.8 thousand tonnes, considerably higher than March’s 5 thousand but still low, HGCA reported last week.
Season-to-date barley exports are 368 thousand tonnes, almost half the amount during the same period last year (764 thousand tonnes).
Malt exports in April were 16.1 thousand tonnes, the highest since September 2012. Total exports for the season at the end of April are 2.5 thousand tonnes (1.5%) behind progress at the same point last season.
The nations’ barley imports this season will be the highest on record since 1995/96. Season-to-date imports are 198 thousand tonnes, compared with a five- year average of season total imports of 123 thousand. One-third was imported from Ireland, with just under a further 25% from Denmark. Germany and Poland were also notable origins, it is reported.

Israel: Beer culture growing despite a still relatively low consumption and tax hurdles
|
With no sea in sight, one of the best counters to the broiling summer heat of the Jerusalem hills is a cold beer. Aram Dekel has perfected that antidote in the form of Touching Blade, an allspice beer with a bracing bite. He serves it in an airy, wood-framed restaurant surrounded by tall trees on the Zafririm moshav south of Beit Shemesh. Old pottery shards from the area prove that people have been crafting beer in the Holy Land for thousands of years. Dekel, with his long gray beard and a collection of fermenting honey, ginger, and banana liqueurs, looks like he could have been among those ancient brewers, TabletMag.com reported on July, 12.
Dekel is part of a growing crop of craft-beer brewers in Israel. Ten years ago, the only domestic beer options in Israel were Goldstar and Maccabee lagers. Now, in the Mateh Yehudah region—the triangle between Jerusalem, the Ella Valley, and the far outskirts of Tel Aviv—nearly every farming community has at least one warehouse filled with beer fermenting in stainless-steel kettles. Inspired by cloudy German wheat beers or bitter American pale ales they tasted while traveling, Israeli brewers are importing sacks of grain and barley and creating
