2. Brewery News
The Danish brewing group, Carlsberg Breweries, has announced that its Asian joint venture, Carlsberg Asia Pte Ltd. had acquired the entire share capital of the Chinese brewery Dali Beer (Group) Limited Company and of the Yunnan Dali Beer Joint Stock Company. The acquisition is subject to approval by Chinese authorities. The brewery is situated in Dali city in the Yunnan province in the south western part of China. Dali city has a population of around 3 million.
The Dali brewery is the largest brewery in Yunnan. It has a capacity of 1.2 million hl beer, approx. 750 employees and a 41% market share in the province. Its most important beer brand is Dali Canger...more info
Beer market quotas in Kiev, Ukraine: Ukrainian brewing force Obolon’s share in the Kiev market decreased from 62% in March 2002 to 47% in March 2003, according to the research made by AC Nielsen Ukraine. Meanwhile Sun Interbrew Ukraine increased its share in that market from 14% to 28%. The third largest brewer of Ukraine, Baltic Beverages Holding (BBH), held 21%. Donetsk brewing group held 3% of the beer market of Ukrainian capital. 2.5% of beer market in Kiev is imported beer.
The Japanese government in May decided to impose a higher tax on happoshu, which had formerly been in a lower tax category under Japanese liquor laws. However, Japanese breweries have introduced new low-malt beer products with emphasis on healthiness. The new products are selling explosively in Japan and are a real breakthrough in the beer market, said the Japanese press.
Asahi Breweries will introduce its new "happoshu" Asahi Aqua Blue from July 19. Aqua Blue has a 50% reduced sugar content and contains more minerals and tasty extracts than Asahi Honnama beer. A PR spokesman for Asahi said confidently, "In order to successfully blend the satisfying taste and healthy ingredients, we extended the development period. After many twists and turns, we came up with a totally brand new 'happoshu.'"...more info
3. Malt News
The 2002 crop malt market is now virtually concluded, some small interest remains for specific destinations in small volumes, Greencore Malting Group said in a statement. The 2003 crop market has still to really get going, some traditional business has been concluded in Continental Europe however later than usual and not always for the full 2004 delivery year due to uncertainty over beer sales.
Enquiries are in the market and many buyers are studying carefully the movements on the barley market, trade is nominal and therefore values are largely technical, a prolonged dry spell is causing concern over European crop prospects and the extent of winterkill particularly in Eastern Europe. Uncertainty is likely to continue until we see volumes of barley safely gathered in the barn when its quality and yield prospects can be fully evaluated.
Kilned malts are the base of all beers. They provide starch and biological catalysts (enzymes) to convert starch to sugar. The name derives from the malt kiln, a large drying oven. They are dried at low temperatures to keep the enzyme systems viable. Czech malt is Europe’s most expensive, about 25% more than German, English, French, and Belgian. There are no government subsidies for Czech malt as there is for German (which is about $.05/lb).

In May this year 2003/3004 barley output has been estimated up to 49.01 Mt – 1.3 Mt greater than in 2002. According to analysts, if quality allows, malting barley availability should be 0.9 Mt greater than last year. Barley imports are still projected to be lower than in 2002/2003. Internal demand is set to rise by 0.6 Mt from last year’s level, mainly as a result of increased demand in the animal feed sector in Spain (at the expense of wheat).
Versus last year the growth in Spanish barley production will also lead to a significant reduction in the volume of intra-EU barley trade. UK barley exports will fall to a marked extent.
At the world level, barley production is set to increase this year in Canada and Australia, but world demand for barley has risen from last year’s levels (in China, Russia, Central and South America). In this climate, the level of world demand addressed to the EU will be much the same as in 2002/2003...more info
