Canada: Ontario has higher beer prices compared to Quebec
|
According to a study of University of Waterloo, Ontario residents pay substantially more for beer than people in Quebec because of the “cartel” of multinationals that controls Ontario beer retailing, The Globe And Mail reported on August, 14.
The study by economics professor Anindya Sen found that the average price difference in a 24-bottle case of beer between the two provinces is about C$9.50, or 27 per cent lower in Quebec.
Most beer in Ontario is sold through the Beer Store, which is owned by three of the biggest multinational beer companies, he said. In Quebec, beer is sold at grocery and convenience stores.
The Beer Store owners are getting C$700-million a year in incremental revenue because of this situation. Professor Sen said the Ontario government gets very little revenue from the sale of beer through the Beer Store, compared with what it earns from mark-ups at the provincially owned LCBO.
The profits are “going directly from consumer pockets to a consortium with majority ownership by foreign based firms,” the study concludes.
The Beer Store is owned by Labatt Brewing Co. Ltd., Molson Coors Canada, and Sleeman Breweries Ltd. (which is owned by Sapporo of Japan).

Canada: Malting barley PROs for 2013-14 lower this month
|
CWB on August 15 updated Pool Return Outlooks (PROs) for 2013-14 Early Delivery and Annual Pools.
Compared to the last PROs released in mid-June, projected malt barley pool returns are C$10 to C$15 per tonne lower, both at C$300/tonne this month.
Malting barley prices have been moving lower on the back of bearish developments offshore and at home. The European winter barley harvest was quite good and the European spring malting barley harvest has been good so far. Australia has received some beneficial rainfall in key barley growing regions, and western Canadian malting barley prospects look much improved compared to last year quality and yield-wise, CWB commented.
PROs are provided as price indications based on current nearby and forward markets. They are calculated basis track west coast or Thunder Bay ports, net of all projected operating costs, including CWB's pool management fee. Volatile market conditions may affect the PROs significantly. PROs are not price guarantees and should not be confused with initial payments. Farmers should consider entering pool contracts as an excellent risk-management tool that provides a solid return from the entire pooling period.

USA, AZ: SanTan Brewing Company to release SuperMonk Belgian IPA in cans
|
SanTan Brewing Company is delivering a hybrid brew that marries the hoppy magic of a West Coast IPA with the traditional spice and fruitiness of a Belgian Wit beer in this fall seasonal, SuperMonk IPA, Beer pulse reported on August, 15.
SuperMonk IPA is a very drinkable craft beer. It’s light on the palate and ideal for craft beer lovers and hopheads alike.
12 oz cans of SuperMonk IPA will be available at valley craft beer retailers from Labor Day, September 2, through the end of October.

Canada, NS: Schoolhouse Brewery to open in Nova Scotia
|
Originally built as a schoolhouse, an historic building in the village of Upper Falmouth, Nova Scotia will soon be home to a new nanobrewery, Canadian Beer News reported on August, 15.
With a mission statement promising that the brewery will be “committed to crafting uncompromising quality beers in an environmentally and ethically responsible way,” Cameron Hartley, the owner, plans to launch Schoolhouse with a trio of brands: a 4.5% abv chocolate porter called Chequers Ale, a 5% abv cream ale called Principal Ale, and the 6% abv Hop Head Harvest Ale.
Aiming to be open in April 2014, Schoolhouse will concentrate on keg sales to local pubs and restaurants, and monthly growler sales at the Wolfville Farmers Market.

Mother Earth is set to release this year’s Window Pane Series Peaches on August 24th, Beer Pulse reported on August, 15.

USA: MillerCoors planning high alcohol content beer
|
MillerCoors LLC will introduce a high alcohol content beer, Miller Fortune, and a hard cider targeting men, Smith & Forge Hard Cider, in the first half of 2014, The Business Journal reported on August 15.
A MillerCoors spokeswoman confirmed the brands will hit shelves next year.
Miller Fortune, at 6.9 percent alcohol by volume, aims to compete with Anheuser-Busch InBev’s Bud Light Platinum, a 6 percent ABV beer introduced last year, AdAge reported. Those are both higher than typical domestics.

USA, MN: Rocky Coast Brewing to open in Lake County
|
Rocky Coast Brewing is expected to open in the fall of this year. The brewery will be located in an old logging building across from Lax Lake in Silver Bay, Lake County New Chronicle reported on August, 15.
The head brewer, Jon Klinkenberg said he plans to brew year-round, expecting that the brewery will see as much business in the summer months as in winter. He’s found, however, that it’s a challenge to explain his concept to people in the Northland because most think of summer as being the busier season. Klinkenberg says he doesn’t see it that way.
“With snowmobilers, skiers, fishing and hunting, we plan to have warm spot to enjoy a cold beer year-round,” he said.
Regarding the production of the beer, Jon Klinkenberg said he wants to source local ingredients as often as possible.
Rocky Coast Brewing is set to officially open its doors this spring.

USA, OR: Ninkasi Brewing to expand
|
Oregon-based Ninkasi Brewing is set to expand distribution into southern California this month, Shanken News daily reported on August, 14.
The brewer will launch its flagship beers, including Total Domination IPA, Believer Double Red, Tricerahops Double IPA, Oatis Oatmeal Stout and Vanilla Oatis Oatmeal Stout, as well as its seasonal releases and limited quantities of its Special Release, Prismatic Lager and Rare & Delicious series to Los Angeles, San Diego and Orange counties.
Ninkasi has entered into agreements with six distributors: Orange County and L.A. will be handled by Straub Distributing Co., Ace Beverage Co., Mission Beverage Co., Triangle Distributing Co. and Heimark Distributing, while L. Knife & Son will handle the brand in San Diageo County.
Ninkasi’s beers are available in Oregon, Alaska, California, Idaho, Montana and Washington.

USA, MN: August Schell Brewing to release Mosaic Pilsner
|
Minnesota-based August Schell Brewing is set to release Mosaic Pilsner, the first entry in its new Fresh Hop series, this fall, Shanken News Daily reported on August, 14.
Mosaic Pilsner’s release will be limited to 100 barrels, available in both six-packs and 1/6-barrel kegs.
The Fresh Hop series launch follows the success of Schell’s Fresh Hop Citra Pils entry, launched last fall as part of the brewer’s Stag Series. A new Fresh Hop release will be brewed during prime hop harvesting season each year.
August Schell currently distributes its brews across Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Canada, ON: Northwinds Brewery to open this September
|
Northwinds Brewery, a new venture headed by avid award-winning homebrewer Geoff Conway, has announced plans to release its first beer to the public next month, Canadian Beer News reported on August, 16.
With production being led by Andrew Bartle, Northwinds will initially be contract brewing at an existing facility, and will be launching with Corduroy Rye IPA, a 6.1% abv and 45 IBU ale.
Future brands will include Three Stage XPA, Milk Run Stout, Northwinds Common, and the Bighead SMaSH series of single malt & single hop beers.
In 2014, Northwinds will be opening its own brewhouse in Collingwood, along with a tied house bar and restaurant that will feature seasonal food menus focussed on ingredients sourced from local suppliers whenever possible.

UK: Just one extra pint a month in a pub can push the beer industry back into growth - CAMRA
|
Beer drinkers in the UK buying just one extra pint a month in the pub would be all that it takes to push the British beer industry back into growth after years of steady decline, lobby group CAMRA has said.
CAMRA said that 38% of pub goers were visiting the pub less often than they did 12 months ago and that beer sales are suffering - despite real ale out-performing the rest of the market – with the total volume of beer sold in the UK during 2012 standing at around 7.8 mln pints, compared to more than 8.2 mln in 2011 and over 8.4 mln in 2010.
The pressure group said the effect was clear to see, with 26 pubs a week now closing in the UK.
Mike Benner, CAMRA Chief Executive, said: “Around 32 mln people in the UK enjoy a beer at least once a year, but the number of people drinking in pubs has been on the decline, contributing to an overall fall in beer sales. Japan & Malaysia: Asahi Super Dry performance in Malaysia ahead of its brewer’s targets
|
The sight of Asahi Super Dry taps is common in most bars in major cities around Malaysia today, as the brand has experienced strong double-digit growth since its launch in December 2011, The Star reported on August 16.
Carlsberg Malaysia marketing director Juliet Yap said distribution for the premium beer, under the Carlsberg umbrella has been on a steady rise, as it is positioned at pubs, clubs, hotels, hypermarkets, supermarkets and also coffee shops.
Carlsberg has an agreement with Asahi Breweries to brew and distribute the latter’s beer in Malaysia.
“Asahi Super Dry has been very well received and its volume and distribution is ahead of our target.
“The distribution channel for Asahi is quite wide and we have gained strong acceptance in Penang, Johor Baru, Kuantan, Kota Kinabalu and the Klang Valley.
“The beer has caught on among the mid to higher-income group, between the ages of 25 to 34 and it is now the fastest growing premium beer in Malaysia,” said Yap.
Carlsberg Malaysia has a portfolio of international beer brands such as Carlsberg, Kronenbourg 1664, Corona Extra and Budweiser.

Rwanda: Heineken’s Bralirwa sees 9% fall in H1 profit
|
Rwandan brewer Bralirwa's first-half pretax profit fell 9 percent due in part to negative foreign exchange effects and rising depreciation charges, Reuters reported on August 14.
Bralirwa, 75 percent-owned by Heineken, said profit eased to 10.36 billion francs ($16 million) from 11.36 billion francs in the first half.
Revenue rose 2.6 percent to 37 billion francs.
Costs rose due to negative foreign exchange effects while depreciation charges on the brewery and soft drinks operations also increased, the company said in a statement, without providing details.
It said its earnings per share fell to 15.06 francs from 15.43 francs in first half 2012.
Bralirwa is Rwanda's oldest brewery with rights to produce brands such as Guinness and Amstel. It also produces branded soft drinks such as Coca-Cola.
