How to assess the sensory impact hop varieties used in the boiling process
ABSTRACT
We all know the dilemma of estimating the contribution of a hop variety to the beer flavor when used during boiling. These Japanese researchers propose a standardized protocol for a sensory evaluation of single variety hop samples boiled in water. Using PCA they found that fruity descriptors could be connected to the varieties Citra and a new Japanese variety called Fuano Beauty whereas Saaz and Mittelfrueh hop samples were connected with herbal, tea and spicy flavours. This protocol may help to forecast the flavour contribution of different varieties in the final beer when used as late hop in the wort boiling process.

Turkey: Anadolu Efes expects new restrictions to limit beer industry growth
|
Turkey’s biggest brewer and SABMiller partner Anadolu Efes expects new restrictions on marketing and sales of alcohol to limit beer industry growth in the country, BeverageDaily.com reported on August 19.
Beer in Turkey is already very heavily taxed – the highest excise in Europe after Finland.
“New measures will probably limit the growth potential of the industry in the coming years,” Anadolu Efes corporate and regulatory affairs group director, Saltuk Ertop, said.
Anadolu Efes held an 89% share of the Turkish beer market in October 2011, and Ertop assessed the impact of the new law, introduced in May, that includes restrictions on the marketing and sale of alcoholic beverages including beer.
“Some of the restrictions are already in-force (such as advertisements), but some others (such as a night sales ban) are coming into force gradually,” he said.
“We therefore believe that it is a bit early to talk about the consequences of the new law on our sales results. However, one can anticipate that these restrictions will increase the pressure on the industry in Turkey,” he said.

India: Molson Coors ready to roll out its King Cobra brand from Bihar brewery
|
Global beer giant Molson Coors Cobra is set to roll out its King Cobra brand of beer from its brewery in Bihar, News Track India reported on August 22.
"The brewing capacity has been doubled and the packaging capacity has been tripled after we took over a local brewery at Bihta near Patna in 2011. We are ready to roll out our famous King Cobra brand beer from a world-class full-fledged quality laboratory in place," Kandy Anand, president of Molson Coors International, said.
He said the company has invested Rs.63 crore in the expanded project to-date. "We are committed to 100 percent investment in Bihar that amounts to Rs.250 crore," he added.
Anand said the multinational company, which currently sells Iceberg 9000 beer in the state, was now expanding its footprint to Punjab, Haryana and West Bengal.
According to him, BIhar is one of the smaller markets for beer consumption in the country. The market size of seven million cases is likely to shrink to six million cases owing to some policy issues on the pricing (taxation) front.

Zambia: National Breweries to build new opaque beer brewery in Lusaka
|
National Breweries Plc will this year invest a whopping K 132 mln ($24 mln) in building a high-tech opaque brewery in Lusaka, 4-traders reported on August 22.
Executive Director, Mr. David Cason confirmed the development saying the new brewery will be built at the same site where the old Lusaka brewery is currently situated along Sheki Sheki Road in the Emmasdale Area.
The new 2.1 mln hectolitre plant will see a complete overhaul of the old plant, which has stood the test of time having been built in the early 1960s.
"The current Lusaka brewery has definitely stood the test of time and we at National Breweries Plc are very excited about the huge investment that we are making to modernise the brewery with the installation of high-tech machinery for enhanced efficiency and productivity," Mr. Cason said.
Aside from up-skilling the current staff, a few local highly technically specialised individuals are expected to be employed before the completion of the plant, which will, for the first time, house a staff canteen for all employees.

Denmark: Carlsberg importing beer to Denmark ahead of a potential shortage
|
Carlsberg A/S is importing beer to Denmark ahead of a potential shortage after a labor dispute at one of its breweries in the country halted production, Bloomberg reported on August 22.
“We are working very hard now on getting supplies from other countries to our customers,” Jens Bekke, a spokesman, said. “This is not a conflict between Carlsberg and the unions, it’s more a conflict between some employees.”
Last week, 130 workers at its Fredericia brewery walked out because a new hire isn’t affiliated to the same union as other employees. The brewery, which has 800 workers, makes all of Carlsberg’s draft beer in Denmark. Production of soft drinks was also affected. Carlsberg has about one week’s stock of draft products and its customers typically hold inventory of one to two weeks.
The workers who have been on strike since Aug. 14 were scheduled to meet again at 6 a.m. on August 23, Bekke said. A labor court has ordered the workers to be fined for every hour they are on strike, and Carlsberg has applied to the court for permission to fire them as their action is against the union agreement.

El Salvador: Communities protest against SABMiller subsidiary’s new well that may leave them without water
|
Communities in the municipality of Nejapa, 21 kilometres north of San Salvador, began to mobilise in April against the plan of Industrias La Constancia (ILC), a subsidiary of the London-based multinational SABMiller, to bore a new well at the company's plant in the district of Galera Quemada in the same municipality, Independent European Daily Express reported on August, 21.
The communities, backed by environmental organisations, maintain that if the new well is drilled, the company will drain the local aquifer and leave local farmers and residents without water.
Only 69.8 percent of rural households in El Salvador have piped water, compared to 93.5 percent in urban areas, according to the Multi-Purpose Household Survey of 2012.
ILC dug two wells in Galera Quemada in 1999 and transferred its soft drinks bottling operations there, including the Coca-Cola brand. Now it needs a third well to increase its supply of purified water.
The company began its operations producing beer in 1906, under the management of Rafael Meza Ayau, a prominent member of the local elite at the time. In 2005, when it had broadened its activities to include juices, bottled water, soft drinks and energy drinks, it was acquired by SABMiller, the world's second largest brewer.

Ireland: Still high percent of barley fails to pass malting quality criteria but failure rate expected to fall as harvest continues
|
As much as 50% of malting barley varieties presented to Dairygold, Ireland's largest farmer-owned business, on some days last week failed to pass the quality criteria required for malting, Irish Independent reported on August 20.
The news comes as yield projections for the country suggest that this year's harvest could be up to 10% higher than expected and should top 2 mln tonnes. Teagasc had forecast a yield of 1.9 mln tonnes.
High protein levels, reaching up to 13.5% in some cases, were the main reason for the malting failures, but the presence of green grains was also an issue for some loads. The upper and lower limits for protein levels in malting barley are 11.5% and 9% respectively.
A spokesman for Dairygold confirmed that a significant proportion of malting barley crops presented at intake points in south Tipperary early last week failed on high protein.
"On some days up to 50% would have failed but over the course of the week it was about 30%," he said.
However, he predicted that the failure rate would fall as the harvest continued. Approximately one-third of Dairygold's malting barley supply has been harvested so far.
