The impact of pro-oxidative storage conditions on the aroma profile of Hallertauer Mittelfruh hops (poster presentation at the 2013 ASBC Annual meeting)
ABSTRACT
Peacock suggested in 1980 that the oxygenated fraction of hop oil, although relatively small in concentration, is critical to the sought-after noble hop aroma. These US researchers have tested it. By storing Mittelfrueh hops in prooxidative
conditions, the GCMS results show a clear increase in terpenoids and oxygen-containing compounds and a simultaneous decrease in terpenes and hydrocarbon compounds. The sensory quality of these oxidized aroma compounds were described with herbal, spicy, woody, and earthy odors, which are associated with a "noble" hop character. However of course, the HSI value increases and alpha and beta acids are degraded. Brewing trials are planned to determine the impact on hop aroma in beer. Read more

USA: Alaska overtakes the other North-American states in beer production
|
According to 2012 data supplied by the Beer Institute, a resource for American beer distributors, Alaska ranks fourth in breweries per capita, just ahead of Colorado and behind only Vermont, Oregon and Montana, News Miner reported on August, 25.
As recently as the 1970s, Alaska had just one brewery: Prinz Brau, which folded in 1979. Alaskan Brewing Company opened in 1986. Based in Juneau, it has grown to become Alaska’s largest brewing operation. Currently, there are 24 operating craft breweries (which include brewpubs) in Alaska, with several others in the planning stages, according to Anchorage Press beer columnist James Roberts, a.k.a. Dr. Fermento.
The Beer Institute also noted that the Alaska brewing industry in 2012 was responsible for almost $500,000 in revenue. The Brewers Association, which tracks the craft beer industry, indicates Alaska ranked 17th in national beer production in 2012, producing 170,610 up from 157,107 barrels in 2011. Though this 8.6 percent growth rate ranks behind the 15 percent national average, production still equates to 10.3 gallons of beer for every drinking-age Alaskan.
James Roberts believes the brewery growth pattern has a direct correlation to historical European breweries, showing up in populated areas along the major travel arteries. Although it wasn’t until

USA, MI: Kuhnhenn Brewing Company to expand
|
Kuhnhenn Brewing Company is expanding into a full-scale production and packaging facility, located at 36000 Groesbeck Hwy in Clinton Township, MI, Brew Bound reported on August, 24.
The 35,000 square foot building will be divided into production, cellaring, packaging and cold storage, in addition to a tasting room and administrative offices. The brewery will feature a four-vessel, 38-barrel Huppmann brewhouse and enough fermentation tanks to allow for a projected capacity of nearly 20,000 bbls.
Kuhnhenn has acquired a high-speed Krones bottling line for packaging beer for the sale to retail stores, while canning is also being considered. Production and distribution of Kuhnhenn Mead will also increase, thanks to the purchase of a 24-head Gea bottling line.
Distribution of keg and case product will initially focus on Southeast Michigan, with further penetration into the rest of the state within the first year. The focus will be on four year-round brands, three seasonals, and several limited release offerings.
The facility is projected to be operational in the first quarter of 2014. The current Warren location will remain open, with a full line of beers, and focus on the production of small-batch experimental brews, as well as an increased barrel-aging program.

USA, CO & OH: New Belgium Brewing to start sales in Ohio
|
New Belgium Brewing said a recent increase in brewing capacity will allow the Fort Collins, Colo., company to begin Ohio sales in December, The Columbus Dispatch reported on August, 26.
Until then, New Belgium will remain as the largest craft brewer without a presence in Ohio.
Of the top 10 craft brewers in the United States, only two, including New Belgium, are not selling product in Ohio.
Deschutes, which offers labels such as Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale, also is adding capacity - 105,000 barrels a year.
New Belgium’s move into Ohio was made possible after the company expanded manufacturing capacity by 700,000 barrels a year at its Fort Collins brewery earlier this year, Simpson said.
The additional capacity also will allow New Belgium to begin selling in Delaware, Florida and Utah, he said. The company also is building a second brewery, which is expected to open in Asheville, N.C., in 2015 and will add 500,000 barrels a year.
Lack of capacity has been a perennial problem for many craft brewers, which have accounted for the majority of beer-industry growth in recent years.
The craft-brewing industry grew 7 percent by dollars to $10.2 billion in 2012, according to the Brewers Association. Overall,

USA, MI: Rochester Mills Beer Co. releases Lazy Daze Amber Lager
|
Rochester Mills Beer Co. & Production Brewery’s Founder, Mike Plesz, announced that Lazy Daze Amber Lager will be the next addition to the brewery’s consistent year-round line-up, with State wide availability on draft and limited availability in six pack cans to Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties beginning with Wednesday, August 28, 2013, Brew Bound reported on August, 27.
As canning production ramps up, the brewery expects to fulfil shipments to all Michigan markets by October.
Lazy Daze Amber Lager beer has the traditional qualities of a Munich Lager with an ABV of 5.25%. The convenience and value of a six-pack of 16oz. cans delivers the equivalent of eight, 12 ounce beers. The suggested retail price is $9.99 per six-pack.
This beer was first brewed at the Rochester Mills Beer Co. brew pub several years ago. Although extremely popular with pub regulars, it did not make the regular rotation that already included a number of lager beers. The recipe has since been refined by the brewmasters to achieve its rich amber colour and medium-bodied flavour.

Newburyport also produces three core beers, its flagship Newburyport Pale Ale, Plum Island Belgian White and Green Head IPA.

USA, CO: Great Divide to build a new facility in Denver
|
Great Divide Brewing Co. is working through Denver city processes to build a $38 million new brewery on Brighton Boulevard in Denver, CO, Denver Post reported on August, 27.
Denver City Council will consider giving the brewery a $1 million loan and also is looking at rezoning a two-block area on Brighton Boulevard between 33rd and 35th streets. The brewery would eventually produce as much as 250,000 barrels of beer a year.
New Belgium, the state’s largest craft brewer, produced 764,424 barrels in 2012, and Oskar Blues was second in the state at 87,750 barrels.
The brewery’s two-phase expansion is expected to create as many as 29 new jobs and will be completed by 2015. It will increase Great Divide’s production from 32,000 barrels a year to an initial capacity of 100,000 barrels and eventually between 200,000 and 250,000 barrels, according to the bill request to be considered by City Council.
It would redevelop the 190,539-square-foot lot at 3403 Brighton Boulevard into a brewery and taproom that will “serve as a community gathering location and a tourist destination,” according to documents filed with the city.

Canada, NS: Meander River Farm to open a nanobrewery
|
River Farm, which has supplied hops and other ingredients to a number of breweries in the area, will soon be brewing its own beer, Canadian Beer News reported on August, 28.
The farm has been waiting for a number of months to get approval to operate a small on-site brewery, and with that approval recently received, preparations have started to build a 3 barrel brewhouse that is planned to be producing beer before the end of the year.
Meander River Farm also intends to offer Community Supported Brewery shares that will allow the public to pay an up-front amount in exchange for beer over time. A similar scheme has been used by Toronto’s Kensington Brewing, and both are based on the Community Shared Agriculture model that has been a staple of farming for many years.

USA, MT: Bozeman Brewing launches three new canned beers
|
Bozeman Brewing is expanding its canning operation to include its Hopzone IPA, Plum St. Porter and Hefeweizen beer, Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported on August, 27.
It comes about a year after the brewery first began canning its Amber Select. From what they've learned after that year, the brewers believe these new cans are going to be a hit.
Four new tanks were crane-lifted through a hole cut in the brewery's ceiling to increase production capacity, and two more employees were hired. The new tanks give the brewery the ability to brew upwards of 10,000 barrels of beer each year, the largest volume of beer a brewery can produce under state law without having to close its taproom.
The state Legislature created the law in 1999, called the sample room exception, which allows breweries to sell up to 48 ounces of beer on site between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., as long as they brew fewer than 10,000 barrels of beer annually. The law helped the craft beer industry grow, and today there are several breweries around the state either above or close to the state-mandated limit.
Todd Scott, owner of Bozeman Brewing, said the brewery wouldn't approach that figure.
“Obviously, we'd like to see that

Ethiopia: Heineken’s two breweries get a loan from Commercial Bank of Ethiopia
|
It was just few weeks ago that Raya and Habesha, two new and upcoming breweries, secured loans of more than a billion birr from the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) for the construction of new factories.
Then on August 22, the CBE approved a loan to Heineken that amounts to some 850 million birr, Ethiosports reported.
The Dutch brewer owns both the Bedele and Harar brands, earning USD 163 million last year.
The total loan approved to the four breweries totaled 1.5 billion birr.
Meta Abo Brewery, owned by the London-based Diageo, has also secured a loan from the state-owned commercial bank.
Sources from the CBE confirmed that it has agreed to disburse 304 million birr for Bedele and 281 million birr for the Harar breweries, revealing that Heineken will increase the current production from 300 thousand hectolitres to 450 thousand hectolitres. However, it is to be recalled that Heineken applied for 403 million birr for Harar and 331 million birr for Bedele’s expansion. The Netherlands-based Heineken is waiting for the CBE’s response to loan requests amounting to three billion birr. According to sources from the CBE, Heineken will learn about the approval next month. Heineken launched a new greenfield brewery

Ireland: Craft beer thriving amid recession
|
The craft beer industry in Ireland is thriving in a time of national recession. Over half of the country’s existing 37 breweries and cider makers have been set up since 2009, Irish Examiner reported on August 26.
But they are backed with a tradition of craft brewing that is embedded in the mists of history. In the 19th and early 20th century, the Irish landscape was dotted with breweries.
Different regions produced different styles servicing the local population with ales and stouts.
The appeal continues today with industry sales rising by 42.5% last year and expected to increase by at least a further 35% this year. This rise was experienced in both the domestic (55%) and the international (25%) marketplaces, despite an overall decrease in domestic alcohol and beer sales.
That growth will be celebrated at the Irish Craft Beer and Cider Festival which takes place at the RDS in Dublin during next week (Sep 5-8).
It will fall in line with Irish Craft Beer Week which will run from next Friday (Aug 30) through independent pubs and off-licences nationwide.
Featuring some 25 craft beverage producers, the festival is expected to attract over 8,000 visitors during the weekend.

South Africa: Craft beer business enjoying a massive demand
|
The Western Cape might be South Africa's wine capital - renowned around the world as the home of some of the country's most famous labels - but not far from Stellenbosch's fertile vineyards there's another drink brewing up a storm, Marketplace Africa reported on August 23.
Inspired by an international boom for local, independent microbreweries, the business of craft beer has also taken off in South Africa recently, as growing numbers of small producers are experimenting with styles and techniques to satisfy a rising thirst for new flavors and novel brews.
"There is a massive demand," says Dan Badenhorst, co-founder of Devil's Peak Brewing Company, just one of the several microbreweries to come out of Cape Town in recent times.
"We started off in a garage, from there we bought our own 500-liter system and now we are in this new 1,500-liter system," he adds. "Constantly, our biggest challenge has been keeping up with the demand."
Craft beer is traditionally produced by independent breweries on a much smaller scale than the multinationals.
In South Africa, a country with a strong beer culture, consumers have traditionally opted for mass-produced beer products. South African Breweries is a subsidiary of SABMiller, the world's second-largest brewer, and accounts for

New Zealand: Moa Brewing appears to be lost in the beer market
|
Moa Brewing appeared to be lost in the beer market, fund manager Brian Gaynor said as he interrogated its board at the listed beer company's annual meeting last week on why sales volumes are expected to be 30 per cent behind targets for this year, The New Zealand Herald reported.
The company, which listed on the NZX in November, estimates sales volumes for the 12 months to March 31 next year will be lower than the target of 195,000 cases published in its initial public offer prospectus.
Moa said last week the reduction was largely a result of a sales shortfall in this country, its biggest market by far, accounting for 70 per cent of the brewer's $4.4 million revenue in the 2013 financial year.
The company blames its New Zealand distributor. Moa said on August, 20 it was changing its distribution model and bringing its sales force back in house.
Chief executive Geoff Ross said the half-year result would bear the brunt of the distribution changeover and that there would be a lull before the company could regain momentum when this new distribution model is implemented from October 1.
As a result of the shortfall, Moa's growth plans would be pushed back by six

Paolo Lanzarotti assumed a position of general manger of Plzensky Prazdroj on August 1, 2013, 4-traders reported on August 26.
During his career at SABMiller so far, Paolo Lanzarotti has managed companies in several beer markets in several countries including Italy, Slovakia and not too long ago India.
