Constellation Brands is committing an additional $100 million over the next five years to support farmers in Idaho, Montana and North Dakota, as the company seeks to strengthen a critical part of its beer supply chain, The Rochester Business Journal reported on August 24.
The incremental investment will include additional purchases from American farmers as well as initiatives aimed at helping growers maintain resilient, sustainable operations and strengthening the agricultural communities where they operate.
Constellation said the commitment comes as U.S. farmers face continued pressure from declining acreage, shifting consumer demand, rising input costs and weather-related challenges.
Barley, corn and hops are essential ingredients in beer production and support a supply chain that extends from farmers and maltsters to brewers, distributors, retailers, transportation companies and local communities, the company noted.
As part of the initiative, Constellation will work directly with growers in the three states to identify opportunities to support their operations over the long term.
The company also is establishing Constellation’s Farmers Future, a grower-led advisory committee that will bring together farmers, agricultural trade groups and community leaders. The group will help guide investments focused on agricultural resilience and the strength of the domestic agricultural supply chain.
“U.S. barley, corn, and hops farmers are an essential part of the American economy and foundational to our business,” said Nicholas Fink, president and CEO of Constellation Brands. “Their work supports communities, drives economic activity across the supply chain and makes it possible for our products to reach consumers across the country.”
Fink said the company recognizes the challenges facing American farmers and intends to continue supporting growers as a foundational component of its business.
Constellation already invests more than $750 million annually with U.S. farmers and suppliers. The company purchases approximately 80% of all U.S. barley exports, underscoring the importance of domestic agricultural production to its beer operations.
The latest commitment also fits into Constellation’s broader economic footprint in the United States. The company said it invests more than $4.2 billion annually in employee wages, capital expenditures and U.S. taxes, while its operations support more than 100,000 American jobs across its supply chain.
