E-Malt.com News article: Vietnam: Carlsberg to invest about $65 million in its Phu Bai brewery in Vietnam
Brewery news

Carlsberg said on October 21 that it plans to invest about $65 million in its Phu Bai brewery in Vietnam between 2026 and 2031, marking a new long-term commitment to a market the brewer is highlighting during Vietnam’s state visit to Denmark, Vinetur reported.

The Danish brewing group said the planned spending would be used to modernize production at the site, expand digitalization, improve resource efficiency and increase the use of renewable energy. The company presented the investment plan as part of a broader message that it intends to deepen its presence in Vietnam over the long run.

Carlsberg tied the announcement to the diplomatic visit by Vietnam to Denmark, placing the project in a wider context of economic relations between the two countries. The company did not provide a detailed breakdown of yearly spending, expected production gains or new employment tied to the plan in the information released Wednesday.

The investment centers on the Phu Bai brewery, a major Carlsberg production site in Vietnam. The company said the project would run over five years, from 2026 through 2031, and would focus on upgrading operations rather than simply adding volume. That places emphasis on factory technology, digital systems and lower-resource production methods at a time when large brewers are under pressure to control costs, strengthen supply chains and meet environmental targets.

Carlsberg has had a long presence in Vietnam, one of Southeast Asia’s most important beer markets. For global brewers, the country remains strategically important because of its scale, its established beer culture and its role in regional manufacturing. By directing new capital to Phu Bai, Carlsberg is reinforcing Vietnam’s place inside its Asian production network.

The company’s focus on digitalization and efficiency reflects a wider pattern across the beverage industry. Brewers have been putting more money into automation, data systems and utility management as they try to improve output consistency, reduce waste and limit exposure to energy and raw material costs. Investments in renewable energy and resource efficiency can also help lower operating risk over time, especially in large breweries where water and power use are major cost factors.

For the beer business more broadly, the move could signal continued confidence in Vietnam as a manufacturing base and consumer market, even as brewers face slower growth in some mature markets. It may also point to further spending across the sector on plant upgrades, production technology and supply chain resilience in Asia. Those effects remain potential rather than certain, but the scale and timing of Carlsberg’s plan will be watched by competitors, suppliers and logistics partners tied to regional brewing operations.

Carlsberg’s announcement did not say whether the investment would expand brewing capacity at Phu Bai, nor did it specify which renewable energy systems may be added. The company also did not disclose whether the spending will be funded entirely from internal resources or carried out with local partners. Those details matter because modernization projects can vary widely in how quickly they affect production costs, output and distribution.

Still, the decision to commit a multiyear sum to one site gives a clearer signal than shorter-term maintenance spending. A five-year plan usually points to a structured program of equipment replacement, process upgrades and operational changes that can alter how a brewery performs across sourcing, brewing, packaging and utilities.

The announcement comes as major beverage companies continue to review where to place long-term capital in Asia. Markets such as Vietnam offer both manufacturing relevance and consumer demand, which can make them attractive for breweries looking to support domestic sales while also building more efficient regional operations. In that setting, Carlsberg’s planned investment in Phu Bai stands out as a bet on modern production, stronger efficiency and a deeper industrial footprint in Vietnam.
