Brewery News

0 Canada: Labatt Breweries to spend $45 million on production upgrade at Halifax plant

Labatt Breweries is pouring $45 million into an upgrade of packaging and production lines at its Oland Brewery operation in Halifax, The Canadian Press reported October 4.

The capital investment means an increase in annual production volume to 1.3 million hectoliters, or more than 380 million bottles. The money comes from Labatt's global parent company, InBev.

The brewery and the province of Nova Scotia have struck a marketing alliance that both say works to promote their brands through the Alexander Keith's label.

In all markets across the country Alexander Keith's beers carry the symbolic words of "Imported from Nova Scotia" and the recognizable Nova Scotia flag.

0 France: Heineken to appeal ban on adverts

Heineken, one of the six official sponsors of the Rugby World Cup in France, are to appeal against a ruling forcing them to pull associated advertising from local magazines and newspapers, The Financial Times Limited reported October 4.

A Paris court ruled on Tuesday that four publicity visuals used by Heineken are illegal under France's 1991 Evin Law, which controls advertising of alcoholic drinks.

The case against Heineken, taken by the National Association for the Prevention of Alcoholism and Addiction (ANPAA), is the second in which the brewer has been charged with breaking French laws governing alcohol advertising.

Heineken said in a statement they would appeal the latest ruling on the grounds they had done their best to respect local laws.

Asked if they felt "persecuted" in France, Heineken said no.

"Heineken's relationship with RWC 2007 is to make the tournament an enjoyable, unique and memorable experience for rugby and its fans across the world," said Vivi Hollertt, a Heineken spokesperson.

Hollertt said the company's promotional activities, in about 15 markets, were adapted to fit local laws; for example, they offered alcohol-free beer in France.

However, the company may yet again have to defend themselves against one of the ANPAA's original charges - one that was not ...

0 Singapore & India: Asia Pacific Breweries bets on strong India growth

Singapore's Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd will tap rising incomes and younger populations in China, India and Vietnam to drive growth over the next decade, a senior company official said, according to Reuters, October 4.

India's per capita consumption of beer is just 1 litre, lagging other Asian markets such as Thailand and Singapore, but rising incomes and easing regulations are helping the market grow quickly, said Vivek Chhabra, director for South Asia at APB.

"The real attraction is the growth opportunity, as it's one of the fastest-growing beer markets in the world," he said at the launch of APB's first brand in India, Baron's Strong Brew.

"As the market matures, there will be a shift to more premium beers," he said. Premium beers made up less than 1 percent of the Indian market, compared to about 15 percent in Vietnam, he said.

Strong beer makes up about two-thirds of the Indian market, estimated at nearly 11 million hectolitres in the year to March 2007, up 27 percent from a year earlier, Chhabra said.

Strong beer is forecast to grow at about 18 percent annually over the next five years, with the total beer market expected to more ...

0 Canada: Barley crop better than last year but lower than estimations

Canada's farmers are expected to produce slightly more crops than forecast this year, thanks to increases in some harvested areas of the country, Statistics Canada said yesterday, The Vancouver Province reported October 5. However, overall production in September was still below the level of a year earlier.

Barley production is forecast at 11.82 million tonnes, down from 11.85 million tons estimated in July but up from 9.57 million tons a year earlier.

The estimates are based on the annual September survey of 17,000 farmers.

0 Ukraine: Barley trade more active on high prices

Trade in barley was more active last week, as the price set by exporters and processors is high, Agro Perspectiva reported October 3.

Agricultural producers still tend to keep grain hoping for higher prices. After all, grain cost constantly grows. Farmers forced to improve their finances and free some funds, were the only who sold grain of the new harvest.

EXPORT

Feed barley exporters purchase prices were UAH1050–1,200 per MT, CPT port.
Feed barley US$ prices ranged within US$247–257 per MT (FOB)/US$237–247 per MT (CPT port).

Scientific Digest
Replicative ageing and senescence in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and the impact on brewing fermentations

Authors
Christopher D. Powell, Sylvie M. Van Zandycke, David E. Quain and Katherine A. Smart

Overview
Ageing is the predetermined progressive transition of an individual cell from youth to old age that ®nally culminates in death. Yeast replicative ageing is a function of the number of divisions undertaken by an individual cell, and may be measured by enumerating the number of bud scars on the cell surface. An aged yeast cell exhibits a distinct morphology and physiology from that of younger cells : the impact of such modi®- cations in cellular function on fermentation performance is examined here. Although the precise mechanism of ageing has not been fully elucidated, the current theories are reviewed and discussed.
